Pisces | Melissa Broder
An original, imaginative, and hilarious debut novel about love, anxiety, and sea creatures, from the author of So Sad Today Lucy has been writing her dissertation on Sappho for thirteen years when she and her boyfriend break up in a dramatic flameout. After she bottoms out in Phoenix, her sister in Los Angeles insists Lucy dog-sit for the summer. Annika's home is a gorgeous glass cube on Venice Beach, but Lucy can find little relief from her anxiety -- not in the Greek chorus of women in her love addiction therapy group, not in her frequent Tinder excursions, not even in Dominic the foxhound's easy affection. Everything changes when Lucy becomes entranced by an eerily attractive swimmer while sitting alone on the beach rocks one night. But when Lucy learns the truth about his identity, their relationship--and Lucy's understanding of what love should look like--take a very unexpected turn. A masterful blend of vivid realism and giddy fantasy, pairing hilarious frankness with pulse-racing eroticism, THE PISCES is a story about falling in obsessive love with a merman: a figure of Sirenic fantasy whose very existence pushes Lucy to question everything she thought she knew about love, lust, and meaning in the one life we have.

This is my second mer-person novel in two months, and while there are some similar themes of one being attempting to possess another and the destructive power of love, the tone is dramatically different in this one than in The Salt Grows Heavy. I found Lucy to be remarkably relatable despite our choices being quite different, and I enjoyed this novel very much.

zezeki Oh, I love this book, it's been years since I've last read it, but it stayed with me! 1y
ImperfectCJ @zezeki It seems like it's one that people either love or hate, which I always find interesting. What was also interesting to me was the number of people who found this one "gross"...I didn't find this one gross at all, especially compared to several other books I've read in the past couple of years. 1y
zezeki @ImperfectCJ Yes, that's what I often hear from people as well. I did find certain parts a little gross, but that didn't put me off of the book, and in the context of the whole story, I felt like it served a purpose. 1y

What a story. I was annoyed by the victim-y self indulgent protagonist at first, but then it got very interesting. The story didn‘t pull any punches with emotion or sex. In the end, regardless of the form (merman), males really let her down.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Some of this book worked for me and some of it didn‘t. I enjoyed the humor and it was a distraction which was exactly what I wanted, but I found some of the details gross and not necessary to describe. I got pretty tired of it by about 2/3 through. At times the writing reminded me of My Year of Rest and Relaxation (I enjoyed that one more).

This is the weekend of not-so-great print books. (Audio are 👍🏻👍🏻) Either her weirdness works for you or doesn‘t, but at least I have my #ConstellationInTitle #pop22 out of the way!

Lucy is more addicted to love (and sex) than Robert Palmer. She‘s immature for 38, too. After a couple of terrible Tinder dates, she meets a mysterious man by the ocean…but he‘s not what he seems…mythology and magical realism abound.

Cortg Bummer for not great reading weekend but the flowers are lovely, you checked a box off the challenge and yay for good audiobooks! Wishing you good reading vibes this week! 😘 3y

KathyWheeler Sometimes the more I think about a book, the more I like it. Not so with this one. The more I think about it, the less I like it. I don‘t mind odd, but this was just not good odd. Lucy‘s immaturity was beyond ridiculous. 3y
Megabooks @KathyWheeler how was she 38?!? She acted 20! I had it for a low so-so when I initially read it, but it sank for me as well. 3y
sarahbarnes I‘d been wondering about this one, so appreciate your thoughts on it. 3y
Megabooks @sarahbarnes thanks! I think it‘s a love it or hate it with not much in between. Interested in your thoughts if you read it. 3y

KathyWheeler @Megabooks I remember thinking that I knew teenagers with more emotional maturity than her when I read it. I have it a so-so but I think that was because I liked the ending. 3y

⭐️⭐️ Nothing can fill Lucy‘s black hole heart. Fresh off a breakup, in need of a scenery change, she dogsits at her sister‘s + starts group therapy. I liked Lucy at first. She felt relatable enough. I dug the first 2/3 of this. There was real potential for a masterpiece; Greek mythology parallels, the siren, symbolism, but sadly that was nixed by bodily functions. That shit was - figuratively and literally - gratuitous. Shock value overload.

britt_brooke @Booksnchill I agree, totally “unnecessary.” 😂 4y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Btw, I‘m still planning to read Milk Fed, but likely with a distorted lens. Or maybe Broder has the distorted lens? Either way, I have to try her again just to be sure. 4y
Cinfhen I think I‘m gonna go back to Milk Fed. I was at 67% and I did love the first 40%. It‘s disappointing that she seems to want to shock readers or be outrageous for no apparent reason other than because she can. It‘s so unnecessary and doesn‘t add any value to the story. 4y

Booksnchill 🤣🤣🤣my words come back to me! Yes, I despaired of the white couch as I recall! You are a better person than me- I shall not read her again- once I saw the cover of Milk Fed I assumed she was at it again! 4y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen That‘s exactly it: shocking with no added value. It‘s an odd thing considering the rest of her writing is quite good. 4y
britt_brooke @Booksnchill 😂 The poor white couch. 🙈 I‘m sure I‘ll end up hate-reading Milk Fed. My hold will be available pretty soon ... we‘ll see! 4y

This book made me so uncomfortable. There were so many sex scenes where she was super not into it but didn't say anything, which were awful. Then even when she has something good with the merman, she becomes obsessed. She's so addicted to feeling wanted and while I understand that is a serious issue that people deal with, I just could not handle staying in that headspace. Maybe it gets better? But I had to put it down, it was making me feel icky.

LiteraryinPA Your reviews are all fantastic! This book sounds like it would not have been for me either. Good idea to move on to something you‘re more in the mood for. 4y

I love how Broder blended fantasy, love, life, eroticism and humor to tell Lucy's tale. I found Lucy's voice and character at times was similar to Rachel's the main character in Broder's forthcoming novel Milk Fed. This is a quick, easy read but it is not simple. Love how Broder can write about sex but there is still a point to the story too its not just erotica. The Pisces is like a bold, humorous sexy reverie. No other book like it! #bookreview

This book is not for everyone, but I loved loved loved it. Melissa Broder's writting, as always for me, drew me in and passages resonate with me. Themes similar to her other writings (depression, anxiety, looking for love in the wrong places and people to fill deeper voids within oneself), this book tells the story of a woman recovering from the loss of a long relationship and the

sarahlandis existential dread of her life's work not being valid, and finally has to figure out who she is. ALSO as always, this book is RICH with sex and very descriptive details. Spoiler: Yes there is Mermaid sex. and yes, it is one of reasons why I chose to read and absolutely adored this book. 5y

This book was completely different from what I thought it would be. I thought it would be #fantasy but it‘s about a 38 years old woman‘s fantasies and her will to get our of life what she wants and needs. Sex, foremost, and love and respect. Quite graphic, all of it, but funny too, I chuckled through much of the book!

It‘s pretty fucked up at times, but that didn‘t make me not like it (might have cringed a few times lol). What I did struggle with was her stream of consciousness, It was a lot to handle. And she wasn‘t particularly likeable, though I don‘t need to like main characters to enjoy the book. Liked most of the ending. Definitely a lot to discuss at book club!

I‘m going to snicker like a 14yo boy right now that this is book 69 on the year for me. 🤣

This book wasn‘t bad. An easy/fun read. It leans more on the romantic side, and those just don‘t appeal to me like they used to.
The main character was someone I found myself not rooting for. She wasn‘t someone I liked. She was selfish and immature. Sometimes she didn‘t even know why she did the things she did. However some situations she was in, I found super relatable as a woman.
Not a bad book, it just wasn‘t for me.

It's a bit of a stream of consciousness mind "bend" with oddly realistic and graphic sex scenes. Some will love it whilst others will be repulsed. All will think, what the hell did I just read? I found the main character's dysfunction to be understandable; I could have been a hot mess like this after my divorce had my female friends not held me up. Lesson: join a book club, ladies, and stay away from fish!

Lucy is a 38 yo graduate student studying Sappho when she breaks up with her fiancé. To get away, she dog sits for her sister in Venice Beach. She is constantly looking for true love, but doesn‘t really seem to know what it is. While the details of this story are unique, the themes are pretty well worn-finding true love vs lust, loving yourself first, and being comfortable without having a SO. The writing is frank, often crass, but fresh. 3⭐️

Wtf did I just read? I‘m genuinely unsure whether this is the best book I‘ve ever read or the worst book I‘ve ever read. Either way, I loved reading, or hate-reading this outrageous novel. It‘s at times, trashy, pulpy and gratuitous, at others serious and tragic. It‘s absurd, and confusing. It‘s definitely pretentious. But it was a bewildering, hilarious, bizarre reading experience.

I've seen a few reviews of this book describing the mc as unlikable, but, in all honesty, I saw a lot of myself in this book. It is a pretty accurate portrait of someone who becomes consumed by love (or "love") in an attempt to fill an unfillable hole inside (and illustrates the reason I now choose to remain single). I've never seen this aspect of myself portrayed so honestly, to the point of almost being unnerving. That being said...?

kalinichta I found the merman stuff itself a bore and could have done with less of the unsexy detailed descriptions of sex (I don't mind sex in a book at all, but after a while it started to feel like the stuff I've put in NaNoWriMo projects just to too my word count) and the mc's reveries about their mystical perfect union (gag). And it absolutely sucks that she's never held accountable for her care of her sisters dog. 6y

This book is batsh*t crazy. I kinda loved it.

If you‘ve ever wondered what (very graphic) sex with a merman would be like, can stomach upsetting animal neglect, and don‘t mind an obsessive, completely unlikeable main character, this may be the book for you. Also, must tolerate weirdness and aforementioned graphic sex that is not at all sexy.

Otherwise, you should probably keep scrolling. Nothing to see here. 😂

Jee_HookedOnBookz I like your review 😅🤣🤣 6y
Leftcoastzen Yowza ! 6y
CarolynM I can honestly say I've never thought about sex with a merman, graphic or otherwise. Now you've got me wondering 🤔 Maybe I should read the book 😉 6y
Ms_T Very nice review - my one no-no is animal cruelty so I‘ll give this a miss 🙈 6y
Kaye Thanks for the warning. Glad you liked it, but I‘d probably use it to start our grill to make supper. I don‘t even like ordinary romance in a book. If it involves animals, I‘ll pass. 😬🤢😵 6y
readordierachel Not sexy in the slightest. 🧜‍♂️ 6y
mabell You totally sold me on “keep scrolling” 😂😂 6y
sprainedbrain @CarolynM You‘re a brave soul. 😂 6y
sprainedbrain @Ms_T most definitely! 6y
sprainedbrain @kaye Yes, this is definitely not a book for you. 😬 6y
sprainedbrain @mabell you‘ve made a good decision. 😅 6y
MemoirsForMe Thanks for the hilarious warning! 🤣🤣🤣 6y

Pickpick

A wildly intriguing novel w real depth of heart to it, despite the seemingly flippant premise. Broder presents a heroine who is both cringe-worthy and desperately appealing; when she meets her merman, it's impossible to tell if the creature is real or a manifestation of her need. But Lucy believes in him, and her desire to be wanted leads her someplace far less magical -- and it's that which moves novel from flippant to disturbing and sobering.

I wouldn‘t have read this if it wasn‘t longlisted for the #womensprize. It just didn‘t appeal to me & I was right in thinking that. I didn‘t hate reading it and I liked the humour, but Lucy annoyed the hell out of me & I just didn‘t get the whole merman thing. I think I get what the author was aiming for but it didn‘t work for me. The more I think about it the more I dislike it 😂🤷‍♀️

⭐️⭐️

julesG And you cannot unknow what you've read in this book. 🙈🙈🙈🙈 6y
EKonrad Amen! 🙌🏼 6y
readordierachel It's a strange one. I didn't dislike it but I definitely didn't love it. 6y

Mehso-so

What the Fish was that about??? On the Women‘s Prize Longlist- huh??? My #NashvillePosse know I have a limit- this was unnecessary! If you think you will enjoy merman sex this is the read for you- along with sex and drug addiction, destructive interpersonal behaviors, abusing the poor dog🤬, lots of suicide attempts and scenes dragging a merman across the sand to get him to your sister‘s white (yes that matters) couch. Not for me🧜🏻‍♂️!

Hollie Ummm what in the world? Not for me, either it sounds like. 6y
Booksnchill @Hollie decidedly a departure for the Women‘s Prize I think- might be satire but if so it was lost on me🤷‍♀️ 6y

Leftcoastzen Love the “what the fish”😂😂 6y
Booksnchill @Leftcoastzen that‘s me- keepin it clean- saline but clean😜 6y
britt_brooke 😆 You lost me at merman sex. How does that even .... never mind. 🙅🏼‍♀️🧜🏻‍♂️ 6y
britt_brooke This book definitely sounds unnecessary. Hard pass. 6y
EKonrad I hated this book with a passion! Can not understand why people liked it. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 6y
julesG This book was so strange. Maybe it's on the short list because of all the gross stuff. 6y
Booksnchill @britt_brooke I 100% hate that I could answer that question...😱 6y
Booksnchill @EKonrad Agreed🤔 6y
Booksnchill @julesG Just on the longlist so far🤞 6y
julesG @Booksnchill Oh yes, you're right. I forgot. 6y
britt_brooke @Booksnchill 😆😩🙉🙊 6y
MicheleinPhilly Your comment about the white couch made me LOL. We just got rid of our white couches and it is glorious! I‘m like “Pickles, go nuts on the non-white couch!” 6y
Booksnchill @MicheleinPhilly 🤣I don‘t think Pickles would do this to your white couch but yes, a non white couch is freeing!!! 6y

Sunny morning with a book, coffee, and a cat getting in on the sunbeam action. This is the life of leisure I was meant for.
