Ask Baba Yaga
Ask Baba Yaga: Otherworldly Advice for Everyday Troubles | Taisia Kitaiskaia
30 posts | 14 read | 47 to read
A self-help book with a poetic twist, using the character of the witch Baba Yaga to present beautiful, often humorous, nuggets of truth about love, relationships, and life. Dear Baba Yaga, I think I must crave male attention too much. I fear that, without it, I would feel invisible. BABA YAGA: When you seek others this way, you are invisible nonetheless. Yr shawl is covered in mirrors in which others admire themselves; this is why they greet you so passionately. It is good to be seen, but it is better to see. Find a being to look hard into, & you will see yrself and what is more than you. In age-old Slavic fairy tales, the witch Baba Yaga is sought out by those with a burning need for guidance. In contemporary life, Baba Yaga--a dangerous, slippery oracle--answered earnest questions on The Hairpin for years. These pages collect her most poignant, surreal, and humorous exchanges along with all-new questions and answers for those seeking her mystical advice. With a strange, otherworldly style, poetic clarity, and striking honesty, Ask Baba Yaga contains beautifully skewed wisdom to be consulted in times of need.

I feel like our lists were fated 🤩 Sistersong had already caught my eye; short stories like in Fit for the Gods seem good for dipping in and out of; and I had the same feeling about Baba Yaga. I feel like 2024 has to be the year in which I unfold my future self, so of course I have to figure out How to Be Perfect. Thank you @monalyisha for another amazing #auldlangspine matchup!

2. I usually go back to childhood faves, Tamora Pierce, Brian Jacques, Patricia C Wrede.
3. This app and this community. You are all wonderful people and I‘ve never felt out of place here.

From her house on chicken legs, Baba Yaga offers some sage advice for modern problems.

I was expecting this to be a little silly, a little funny. I wasn‘t expecting to get sucker punched with painful questions that I could have written myself, and answers that were poetic and deep and actually helpful.

The odd punctuation thrown in took some getting used to. But there were some amazing illustrations and the advice was good. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

My mom sent this to me as an early birthday gift and I read the entire thing in one sitting. My absolute favorite thing is when whimsy and profoundness intersect, and that‘s exactly what the advice in this book does. I adore it.

This was a delightful non-fiction book that is a compilation of problems/questions that were sent to The Hairpin. The author provided answers to the issues from the perspective of Baba Yaga. Absolutely enjoyable and the illustrations are gorgeous in black, white, and red.

A quirky, funny advice book that, with it's concise yet poetic language, reaches through to the core of important life questions and forces you to examine your own heart, mind, and feelings. The rich imagery provides a backdrop to rethink your issues and see them from a new angle. I also love the styling of the book, and it's lovely illustrations.

One of my favorite things to do is to stroll through the library looking at books, especially the "new books" shelves. How else would I have found this awesome little book?

The cover immediate drew me in - I love the design! Also, I studied Russian in college and Baba Yaga was always a fascinating tale. I can't wait to see what gems of advice she has to dispense. ?

Bibliotekate @lorannen Yessssss! I think this originated as an advice column in The Hairpin? It‘s on my list. 7y
RachLovesTV @Bibliotekate Yes! That's exactly where it originated! Sounds like some of it is content from the Hairpin, and some of it is new to the book. 7y

Yes, Baba Yaga's spelling and grammar leaves something to be desired, but it was purposefully done to achieve a rustic,—this word forever makes me think of @Figgy —folktale-y tone. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

A good friend at work is recently engaged and has run into this letter writer several times. This gave both of us a giggle.

WanderingBookaneer What app did you use to create this effect? 7y
DarcysMom @WanderingBookaneer I used textgram. You can adjust the opacity of photos and layer them on top of each other. It is super easy to use - I wouldn't be able to use it otherwise. 😉 It also has ready made templates and a bunch of fonts. 7y
DarcysMom @WanderingBookaneer For the first layer (the picture of the book) I used photogrid to create the image. 7y
