So I started reading, and very quickly wondered, “omg I‘m not sure about this.†But it‘s Jenni Fagan…so I keep at it -damn her and her incredible imagination. What a book!Definitely not a cheerful story but oh so good!

#12booksof2021 #December Thanks to @andrew65 for setting up this thread which allowed a reflection on some books that I enjoyed in 21 and seeing other people's choices.
This is my final one as I say goodbye to the Christmas decorations for another year and I've gone for a brilliantly represented voice of a troubled Scottish teenager struggling through the system and abuse but finding friends. A great character who I was sorry to leave behind.

Andrew65 Like the sound of this. End of Christmas 😔 3y

Amazing storytelling and an incredible voice in the form of 15yr old Anais; an orphan having lived in many Foster homes + found her last mother stabbed in a bath, she is now in a children's home suspected of leaving a police officer in a coma. In the home she finds a family. Quirky, intelligent, passionate,+ but violent + angry she suffers at her treatment by authority + men. This book is gut/heart wrenching, brilliant, a character drawn so well.

Jenni Fagan's excellent novel is set in a young offenders' institution based on an 18th century idea of the perfect prison

Wavering between hopefulness and hopelessness, this book raises questions about adoption, foster care, the prison system, mental illness, and the way society treats unwanted children. I really loved the raw, fierce voice of the protagonist Anais.

Icefireski Interesting. Diffenbaugh's book really made me think about growing up and out of the system and I enjoyed it so I think I may pick this one up. 8y
Brie I've never heard of that one. Thanks for the recommendation! 8y

Just not fitting my current mood, and not intriguing enough to return to it later.

Lindy I loved Anais' fierce voice and she broke my heart. Her circumstances were tough and it seemed she could never catch a break. 8y
Owlizabeth @Lindy it's an interesting concept and probably good, just not what I need now and has to go back to the library. I might come back to it later... 8y
Lindy Well, there are so many other books calling. I don't believe in sticking with one that isn't a good fit. Hope your next one is a stunner! 8y

I wasn't sure what to expect based on the blurb. Psychological thriller? Horror? Turns out it's sort of like One Flew Over The Cuckoos' Nest in juvie. Strong writing & a protagonist you really feel for. The Scottish slang can be hard to understand at times, but overall I enjoyed this book. âï¸âï¸âï¸1/2

Nearly done with this one. The Scottish slang took some getting used to but I'm into it now.
