Foxglove Summer
Foxglove Summer | Ben Aaronovitch
When two young girls go missing in rural Herefordshire, police constable and wizard-in-training Peter Grant is sent out of London to check that nothing supernatural is involved. It s purely routine Nightingale, Peter s superior, thinks he ll be done in less than a day. But Peter s never been one to walk away from someone in trouble, so when nothing overtly magical turns up he volunteers his services to the local police, who need all the help they can get. But because the universe likes a joke as much as the next sadistic megalomaniac, Peter soon comes to realize that dark secrets underlie the picturesque fields and villages of the countryside and there might just be work for Britain s most junior wizard after all. Soon Peter s in a vicious race against time, in a world where the boundaries between reality and fairy have never been less clear...."

Bonkers in the best way. The surprise beastie is too good to spoil. I always want more Nightingale, but getting more Beverley in this book was a decent trade off. The hints via phone communication of what Lesley's up to definitely increase my need to read the next in the series. 😉
The audio books remain superb.

One nice feature of the Rivers of London series is that little bits or history is unsubtly dropped in, and not as non sequitors but as drivers of plot. This one sees Peter Grant in the west mercia countryside, and talks quite a bit about the deforestation (and reforestation) of Britain, which I've been interested in lately. Also: faith that ongoing series themes will not be lost has been established.

Love this series- had to relisten to this entry in my favourite Rivers of London series: it takes place during the same time period as Abigail‘s Summer- full of magic and romance ( Bev and Peter❤️)💚🐉

This was the best yet in the series. I liked Beverley and Peter together and enjoyed the mystery of the missing girls. I always figured Molly to be a vampire. Also pictured our chunky cat Zara.

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Her coloring is SO pretty! ❤️😱❤️ 4y
Tineke @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm it is, isn't it?! She is this chunky, cuddly and independent cat. She lived with her mom on a farm as a kitten. I took her with me, and now she is this cat that needs to be outside 12 hours a day and the other part she is inside and sleeps. Busy life probably. I'll add her in other reviews, so that you can see her entire coloring and her queen-like behaviour😅 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Tineke Lol, she certainly sounds like quite a character! 😅❤️ 4y

Years ago, a friend disrupted her own party to try and find her copy of “Rivers of London” to shove it in my hands when she heard I hadn‘t read it. She couldn‘t find it, and I forgot about it. Unpacking my husband‘s copy seemed like as good a reason to follow up on that recommendation as any! I‘ve absolutely flown through the first four now and have #6 and 7 on order 🥳

Two girls have gone missing in a country town, and Peter heads out to assist in the search, even if there might not be magic involved.

I love Peter's characterization and growth so much! And watching him deal with the ending of the last book is amazing.

One of my fav things about these books is that I get enough info to guess pieces of the climax, but enough plausible red herrings that I'm still confused on the final shape. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Influenza-like illness put a real cramp in my reading over the past two weeks. I couldn‘t focus on this Peter Grant fantasy-mystery like I wanted to. I‘m reading them in order and this was just as enjoyable as the first four - the countryside put a nice twist on the usual London setting. I did miss Nightingale, though.

By this book, I feel Aaronovitch has found his groove and struck the right balance between character development and plot development. This series is typically described as “CSI meets Harry Potter”, which I totally see. A very quick and entertaining read.

With each book, I like this series more than I previously did. We‘ve always encountered supernatural creatures in this world but I loved this one particularly because we got unicorns and the Fae! Plus Peter is growing and coming into his own as a wizard. I actually finished this over three separate short walks instead of one long one. #audiowalk

🎧 This Rivers of London installment finds wizard/PC Grant out of The London environs and stomping around the fields of Herefordshire looking for a couple of missing girls...

While not as fast or snarky as past Pete Grant novels, it still has quite a few surprises and a couple of laugh out loud moments 😉

And as always, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, the audiobook narrator is absolutely brilliant.

avalinah I also felt like this one was a little bit different to the other PC Grant stories. I've recently read The Long Way Down though and it's something I can truly recommend - a similar vibe, but the main guy is SO not a goodie two shoes, which makes a pleasant change in this kind of urban fantasy! 7y

🎧 Continuing my Rivers of London/Peter Grant listening run by starting this one later today. I love Ben Aaronovitch‘s clever writing and Kobna Holbrook-Smith‘s audiobook narration (Really, audio is *the* way to go with this series!)

Absolutely no idea what PC Grant may be up to in this urban fantasy this round, but if the cover is any indication, it looks like it‘s set in Rushpool.

#5 in the PC Grant series. Peter Grant is sent out to investigate the disappearance of two young girls and whether the supernatural is involved. At first it does not appear so but Peter volunteers to stay and help the search. Magical creatures do seem to be involved and Peter must deal with things without his usual back up. Beverley, a river goddess shows up to add to the fun. Nice to see Peter growing into his job.

I really hope that Aaronovich hurries up and writes more books in this series, because I've only got one more to go, and I don't know what I'll do with myself after that. Other than start in on my mile high pile of other things to read, that is. I think this is my favourite book in this series yet! It was fun to get to see Peter a bit out of his element in the countryside and the mystery was juicy. This one was a bit more straight forward police procedural than some of the others, but with: Unicorns! Changelings! Fae! BEVERLY the river goddess!! And your run-of-the-mill child kidnapping. God, Beverly is the best. And so is Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, #audiobook voice actor extraordinaire.

Centique I love this series too. Especially Beverly. 😍😍You summed up my feelings about it EXACTLY - haven't tried the audio though - sounds like I should! 7y

"Then they found the phones. Both immediately identified as belonging to Nicole and Hannah, both with dead batteries. Best way to sum up the series is to imagine if Harry Potter grew up and joined the police force. The authors love of London bleeds through the pages of every book
