Sister of My Heart
Sister of My Heart: A Novel | Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
From the award-winning author of Mistress of Spices, the bestselling novel about the extraordinary bond between two women, and the family secrets and romantic jealousies that threaten to tear them apart. Anju is the daughter of an upper-caste Calcutta family of distinction. Her cousin Sudha is the daughter of the black sheep of that same family. Sudha is startlingly beautiful; Anju is not. Despite those differences, since the day on which the two girls were born, the same day their fathers died--mysteriously and violently--Sudha and Anju have been sisters of the heart. Bonded in ways even their mothers cannot comprehend, the two girls grow into womanhood as if their fates as well as their hearts were merged. But, when Sudha learns a dark family secret, that connection is shattered. For the first time in their lives, the girls know what it is to feel suspicion and distrust. Urged into arranged marriages, Sudha and Anju's lives take opposite turns. Sudha becomes the dutiful daughter-in-law of a rigid small-town household. Anju goes to America with her new husband and learns to live her own life of secrets. When tragedy strikes each of them, however, they discover that despite distance and marriage, they have only each other to turn to. Set in the two worlds of San Francisco and India, this exceptionally moving novel tells a story at once familiar and exotic, seducing readers from the first page with the lush prose we have come to expect from Divakaruni. Sister of My Heart is a novel destined to become as widely beloved as it is acclaimed. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I am blessed to have a beautiful sister who is fond of earrings 😜🙈 We are almost like Meg and Jo 😻 poles apart still besties forever 🥰💐

I like this tagged book however I don‘t want to read its sequel. The ending was better and I don‘t want to know the next story.

Beautifully written. It is an amalgam of emotions with family secrets, love, trust, friendship, jealousy and heartaches. Though there is a sequel, I m happy with the way story ended in this book.

Sister of My Heart shows the meaning and heartache of two girls‘ close emotional bond — a bond that is tested a few times, especially when each grow up and marry. Set mostly in India. Many lovely written passages (without being too flowery). There‘s a sequel, which I‘ll look for, but will read with trepidation because I‘m hoping for happy endings in that sequel.

Thanks @Reggie for this book 💖!

Didn‘t get to do much #litsypartyofone last night (hubby wanted to try a brewery taproom) but tonight I‘m settling in with a warm blanket and this book! Will make a martini soon🍸 . @Reggie I had to reread the first couple chapters to get a grasp of who‘s who but think I‘ll like this!

#mrbook1inamillion

Andrew65 Always good to be able to concentrate on a night‘s reading. 5y
Lynnsoprano I just had my glass of wine 😄 5y
ValerieAndBooks @Reggie correction: I reread the first three chapters. I have a feeling there‘ll be some kind of surprise twist at the end of the book?! 5y

It‘s #litsypartyofone weekend!! Celebrating @MrBook ‘s #mrbook1inamillion event which includes a readathon that I won‘t have time for 😢. But I plan to party with my current reads and snacks today and tomorrow 😋 . Not pictured: any drinks I‘ll be having in the evenings 🍸🍷🍺

FashionableObserver I could go for those dill pickle chips right about now! (And the beverages...especially the beverages) Enjoy! 🤓 5y
Lynnsoprano I‘ll be having some of those beverages, too 😊 Ah, Ritter Sport! 5y

MrBook Oooh, I love this 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻!!! Cookie ‘n cream popcorn 😳😱?! I‘m so incredibly happy you‘re joining the fun, my good friend! ☺️🤗🤗🤗 5y
ValerieAndBooks @FashionableObserver I didn‘t get to read as much as I wanted but I did make sure to enjoy most of these snacks and drinks 😂! 5y
ValerieAndBooks @Lynnsoprano I love their marzipan version 😋! 5y
ValerieAndBooks @FlowerFairy one of my favorite flavors too— and one I know I get all to myself, as my husband doesn‘t like dill 😂 5y
ValerieAndBooks @Andrew65 have to have good snacks for this momentous event 👍🙌! 5y
ValerieAndBooks @MrBook I would have loved to participate/party more this weekend! But glad I could in a small way. You‘re awesome 😎! (And yes that cookies and cream popcorn is 👍) 5y
FlowerFairy Hahahaha!!! I‘m the only one who eats them as well. Finally a snack my kids won‘t snarfle down before I get some. 🤣 5y
Lynnsoprano When I first read this post on my phone I couldn't tell what all the books were. Looking forward to reading RBG. I'm anxious to hear what you think of the Atkinson. Hubby has read some of his other books, and I've been thinking about this one as a Christmas gift for him. 5y
ValerieAndBooks @Lynnsoprano I think Atkinson would be a good Christmas gift if he‘s enjoyed his other works. There‘s a lot of details, so it‘s slow going for me, but it‘s not dry. 5y

Recipe to make me cry: A dash of Indian culture, just enough to make you nostalgic, a dollop of patriarchy, and a drop of pure real emotions.
This book is severely underrated.

I 💜 this book. A really interesting coming of age tale about two cousins who are more like sisters. They have a really close relationship that sometimes leads them into troubling scenarios. Really beautiful. It is the first in a duology but I don‘t know if I plan on reading the next one. I like where it ended. ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reggie Yeah, then don‘t read it. It leaves off at a horrible place. I always wished she wrote a third one. This book is in my top five books of all time. I love the 2 girls, and their mothers/aunts, all the family secrets. And beautifully written. Her short stories are wonderful, too. Glad you enjoyed it. 6y
riversong153 @Reggie you know what? I had a strong feeling that it would leave off in a bad place. It was inevitable based on the scenario they set up at the end. 6y

Finished Sister of My Heart this morning before heading out to campaign for a good friend (and gun control activist) who is running for the NC State House!

Don‘t want to say too much, since this is my #LMPBC Round 2 pick, but I really enjoyed this one. I will definitely be looking to see if my library has the sequel, or any of the author‘s other books.

It‘s my pick for #Booked2018 #Friendship and also for #MountTBR.

Lcsmcat Thanks for your civil service! Who‘s the candidate? (I‘m in Wake County and would love to support someone like that.) 7y

Spending some time at my next-door neighbor‘s keeping an eye on their older, blind dog who wants to spend some time in the spring sun (when they both had to run off to work). Their backyard is a beautiful reading spot.

amb @4thhouseontheleft @TheKidUpstairs Jem was amazing and when Netflix had it I watched it all again as an adult. The movie missed the mark entirely didn't even come close to the basic tenets of the original. Makeup does not a Jem and the Holograms make. 7y

Now that spring break is over, my frolic in the land of the Norse gods and goddesses needs to pause, because my stack of books I should read keeps growing!

The rest of the month will probably be filled with my Round 2 #LMPBC pick, the #novelteabookclub read, 3 ARC‘s courtesy of LibraryThing and Netgalley (2 ebooks not pictured), my #truecrime pick for #pop18, and my next #agathachristieclub (still behind) on Overdrive.

Whew, that‘s a mouthful!

dgingo What‘s the Curtis Sittenfeld about? I just read 7y
alisiakae @dgingo It‘s a short story collection. The letter from the publisher describes it: “Sittenfeld pinpoints the questionable decisions, missed connections, and sometimes extraordinary consequences that make up a life. She writes what we are all thinking.” (Hence the title, I‘m guessing!) Did you like Eligible? 7y
dgingo @4thhouseontheleft Ah! Sounds intriguing—let us know how it is when you get to it! I did like Eligible—it‘s a Pride and Prejudice modernization. 7y

I liked this more and more as I read it. Two girls, born the same day, and destinies ties together by family and fortune, make decisions about love and be future and decide what it means to be a woman. I didn't start this book knowing there is a sequel and now I need to pick it up...
