She Rides Shotgun
She Rides Shotgun: A Novel | Jordan Harper
A propulsive, gritty novel about a girl marked for death who must fight and steal to stay alive, learning from the most frightening man she knowsher father Eleven-year-old Polly McClusky is shy, too old for the teddy bear she carries with her everywhere, when she is unexpectedly reunited with her father, Nate, fresh out of jail and driving a stolen car. He takes her from the front of her school into a world of robbery, violence, and the constant threat of death. And he does it to save her life. Nate made dangerous enemies in prisona gang called Aryan Steel has put out a bounty on his head, counting on its members on the outside to finish him off. Theyve already murdered his ex-wife, Pollys mother. And Polly is their next target. Nate and Pollys lives soon become a series of narrow misses, of evading the bad guys and the police, of sleepless nights in motels. Out on the lam, Polly is forced to grow up early: with barely any time to mourn her mother, she must learn how to take a punch and pull off a drug-house heist. She finds herself transforming from a shy little girl into a true fighter. Nate, in turn, learns what its like to love fiercely and unconditionallya love hes never quite felt before. But can their powerful bond transcend the dangerous existence hes carved out for them? Will they ever be able to live an honest life, free of fear? She Rides Shotgun is a gripping and emotionally wrenching novel that upends even our most long-held expectations about heroes, villains, and victims. Nate takes Polly to save her life, but in the end it may very well be Polly who saves him.

In this gritty, propulsive thriller, Nate McCluskey learns the leader of Aryan Steel has put a bounty on his head just as he's about to be released from prison. Worse, his ex and their 11 year old daughter Polly are targets as well. Nate takes Polly on the run with him, while the reader is taken on a deep dive into the skinhead criminal underworld, punctuated by violence and revenge. I fully expect a limited series based on this book at some point

11 year old Polly “rides shotgun” with her father, Nate, after his recent release from prison. The skinheads are after them and things get intense with violence and totally unbelievable situations. But it was a nice distraction. Reminded me a bit of S.A. Cosby‘s novels. Picked up after reading about it in a Book Riot email.

Whew! Started and didn‘t come up for air until done. After her Mom is killed, 11 year old Polly goes on the run with ex-con dad. There‘s an Aryan Brotherhood contract on their heads. Until they get tired of running; time for payback. With kid/adult points of view; not for readers who dislike violence. You may not like how Polly comes into her own; but cathartic. Little girl who just wanted to be anonymous: now has gunslinger eyes. PoMo Western.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½ • Gritty with Breaking Bad vibes, this book was REAL GOOD. (Not for the faint of heart — lots of violence, but it plays an important role.)

Erinreadsthebooks I think this book is flying under the radar, definitely needs more press 5y

A little much on the body horror but I still enjoyed the story and uncovering the father‘s motives, but the things the little girl does over the course of the narrative gave me a lot of chills!

Prairiegirl_reading I had to stop this one. It‘s so violent! I was enjoying it but it just got too much! 5y

This is an early frontrunner for my favorite read of 2019. It drew me in from the first page. I had to take my time with this one because I did not want it to end. I loved Polly and Nate and seeing their relationship evolve as the story progressed. A really dark, but beautifully written story. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Be warned, this one is a little dark but so well written you forget about it. The POV alternates seamlessly between the male protagonist, his daughter, and a few others. I usually don't love when authors weave in a kids POV to an adult story, but the POV of the girl, Polly, ended up being my favorite of all the POVs. Worth a read.

I love reading by the light of the Christmas tree! I can't believe Christmas Day is almost here. I love this time of year and it always feels like it goes so fast. I'm really trying to worry less about time getting away from me, and spend more time enjoying the present moment...which means getting back to my book! Happy holidays!

I don‘t remember where I heard about this book, and to be honest, I don‘t know how I feel about it. It felt like a modern western without a good guy to root for. I am giving it a “pick” rating, though, because it was compelling. Listened to it in two days.

Seriously unpopular opinion here but this book didn‘t really do anything for me. I had high expectations, and a story about vigilante justice, ex-cons, and Aryan gangs should have had a lot going for it. In spite of the odd beautiful sentence, I found the writing flat, detached and ineffective. Consequently, I struggled to connect to the characters.

This is a well written book with a premise you have heard before. At heart, it is a revenge/elimination story with a father picking off gang members who placed a hit on him and his daughter. The storytelling though is told from 3 perspectives- the father, the daughter, and a police officer following the case. It is the father daughter story that drives the story. She thinks she has been kidnapped not understanding his love. Worth it.

Things I'm loving today: this audiobook.

Bks4Wrms Just curious as to where you usually get your audiobooks? (edited) 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Bks4Wrms I use Libby always. Audiobooks are super expensive and I listen to so many a month. This month I think I'm up to 11. I am stuck with picking something that's available, but the library always has something with no wait that I'd be interested in. Sometimes I put myself on the wait list for things I really want on audio. 7y
Bks4Wrms Thanks! I was wondering since you always seems to be listening to popular books. Your digital library seems pretty good based on the “available” titles alone. 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Bks4Wrms It is! I live in Iowa, but the man who does the purchasing for the Ankeny library does a phenomenal job. I'm always so impressed with the "New in" shelf inside the library and their ebook selection as well. 7y

Engaging book that makes me think of a good action movie (with heart!). I'm already picking out who I would cast as 11 year old Polly and her father, Nate. I haven't quite figured out who yet. I couldn't help but think back to Natalie Portman's role as Mathilda in "The Professional."
I read this in a day. Couldn't put it down!

Probably an odd choice for Christmas reading, but it sucked me in. Nate pissed off an Aryan gang in prison, and now that he's out they're coming for him and his daughter Polly. Nate teaches Polly how to be hard enough to survive, and there's lots of crime, bloody gunfights, and daddy/daughter bonding. Bit of a 'True Grit' feel to it.

This novel has a great hook; I was sucked into the adventure right away. I thought the main character's Dad was charming in his pursuit of vengeance and protection regardless of whether he broke out of prison or not. Harper truly took me for a ride (I was riding shotgun 😛)!

This is a fast-paced, gritty story of a father and his young daughter on the run from murderous skinheads hoping to settle a jailhouse vendetta. It's like Oz meets Paper Moon meets The Professional. It's bloody and violent, but the writing is electrifying. I dug it. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
