People I Want to Punch in the Throat: Competitive Crafters, Drop-Off Despots, and Other Suburban Scourges
People I Want to Punch in the Throat: Competitive Crafters, Drop-Off Despots, and Other Suburban Scourges | Jen Mann
42 posts | 49 read | 57 to read
NATIONAL BESTSELLER A debut collection of witty, biting essays laced with a surprising warmth, from Jen Mann, the writer behind the popular blog People I Want to Punch in the Throat "People I want to punch in the throat: " " anyone who feels the need to bling her washer and dryer" " humblebraggers" " people who treat their pets like children" Jen Mann doesn t have a filter, which sometimes gets her in trouble with her neighbors, her fellow PTA moms, and that one woman who tried to sell her sex toys at a home shopping party. Known for her hilariously acerbic observations on her blog, People I Want to Punch in the Throat, Mann now brings her sharp wit to bear on suburban life, marriage, and motherhood in this laugh-out-loud collection of essays. From the politics of joining a play group, to the thrill of mothers night out at the gun range, to the rewards of your most meaningful relationship (the one you have with your cleaning lady), nothing is sacred or off-limits. So the next time you find yourself wearing fuzzy bunny pajamas in the school carpool line or accidentally stuck at a co-worker s swingers party, just think, What would Jen Mann do? Or better yet, buy her book. Advance praise for "People I Want to Punch in the Throat" "People I Want to Punch in the Throat" is so good that it ll make you want to adopt all the cats in the world. I m not sure about the correlation, but it s "that" good. It should come with a warning. Jenny Lawson, author of "Let s Pretend This Never Happened" Jen Mann has an amazing way of telling stories that will make you cringe and burst out laughing at the same time. From swinger parties to racist toddlers, she makes the suburbs unbelievably funny. Karen Alpert, author of" I Heart My Little A-Holes" Jen Mann says the things we re all too afraid to say. Her honest and hilarious writing style reminds me of David Sedaris and Tina Fey. Robin O Bryant, author of "Ketchup Is a Vegetable: And Other Lies Moms Tell Themselves" Jen Mann s shrewd and unrelenting assault on the absurdity of suburban life is an honest peek into the occasional nightmare that is part of living the American dream. I love Jen. I wish she was my neighbor. It s so refreshing to know that I m not the only one who wants to punch almost everyone in the f***ing throat. Nicole Knepper, author of" Moms Who Drink And Swear""

Love this book! Jen Mann is one of the funniest moms out there. She tells us stories of her trials of being a suburban mom and wife. From rushing out of the house in pajamas because she forgot to pick up her son from school, to school to her daughter asking if she, too, will have hair on her "china" just like her mom, Jen weaves pee-in-your-pants stories of her life and those around her she just wants to punch in the throat. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

She lives! …I live? I‘m alive… still. Again.

True story. This summer was hard. I missed Litsy. I missed my pen pals. I missed it all. But I‘m back for now (at least until the next mental crisis).

Hi friends. 😌

JacqMac Welcome back. I get it. I disappeared for awhile, too. 3y

Love the title, quick read, and had a couple LOLs. Other than that just ok, she's a blogger and that's what it felt like I was reading. Her just bitching about other soccer moms basically, nothing particularly hilarious or poignant.

Prairiegirl_reading That‘s disappointing because the title is 👌🤣 3y
ShelleyBooksie I'm sad to hear that it was meh- thats one heck of a title! 3y
5feet.of.fury Ditto the other comments! Too bad it didn‘t live up to the title 3y

I agree with Mann, many of these people need to be punched in the throat. And why is mommy culture so toxic and just plain horrible?
Funny stories, cringe-worthy moments, and pretty relatable situations.

This was quite a funny read. I am not very familiar with the life style described, but I do enjoy her descriptions of it. I live in a different kind of suburb, and I hate it, but I appreciate that the author can both love and hate her suburb. This collection of essays had me laughing, which is always a good kind of read. 3.5/5, read this as a series of essays and enjoy the witty, sometimes absurd musing of an working mom.

First book of the year! I mostly listened to the audiobook while I was running errands and doing chores and what not. Didn't read too much of the physical book. It was a lot shorter than I expected.

It was a funny and goofy book. Not something I could really relate to, but I still liked listening to Mann as she told the stories. I laughed out loud a few times.

A sometimes comical look at raising your kids in #thesuburbs, this wasn‘t quite what I expected. Not quite as funny as expected either. However, there were definitely some good laughs.

This book was just what I needed. Silly, a little snarky, Mom humor. Most of it wasn‘t laugh out loud funny, and I doubt many of the stories are true, but it was a fun read nonetheless

There's no option on Litsy to review the kindle single volumes of this series, but this review is just for volume 1. This was suggested to me by Amazon after finishing Furiously Happy, and it was only $0.99 so I figured what the heck? It took me about 15-20 minutes to read and was actually pretty funny. I'll definitely be checking out more of the series! 4⭐️

Because nothing says love like a good 🥊

Admittedly, I felt a need for physical violence when “The Hubs” questioned his neighbor spending $13k for his dog‘s surgery instead of putting him down. Also, I could punch the author for using the nickname “The Hubs” ad nauseum.

Happy Valentines 😂

Yes - it's been that kind of a day. When you end up covering your work desk with masking tape to avoid ruining yet another shirt or pair of leggings, you know you are winning at life. At least now that I'm home I can enjoy a few laughs and think about throat punching. 👊💥🤕

DebbieGrillo I've been there. I hope you get a new desk! 7y
CuriousG @DebbieGrillo I work for a school board, so I'll probably have worked another 2 or 3 decades and retired before that desk gets replaced. Lol. It's all good though - better the money go towards programming. I can solve most problems on my own with enough tape. 7y
DebbieGrillo I'm a teacher too. Ironic that we've both had to deal with this. The building manager fixed mine. 7y

We always choose one funny book for book club during the year. This year, it was this one. I'm not a mom so I didn't relate to much of the humor. I almost bailed after the first couple of chapters but gave it a second chance and made it through. We did have a nice book club lunch today, though!

A funny collection of essays that are more relatable to moms (some dads). Some were laugh out loud funny, others not so much. I think I have a much longer list of people that I want to throat punch. To each his/her own.

Funny and so relatable for me. I can get behind Jenn's "fuck that shit" attitude since I share it on so many things. This did sort of make me never want to have kids because it sounds exhausting. Good book for helping me get out of my reading funk.
