Jemima J: A Novel | Jane Green
18 posts | 75 read | 12 to read
Jemima Jones is overweight. About one hundred pounds overweight. Treated like a maid by her thin and social-climbing roommates, and lorded over by the beautiful Geraldine (less talented but better paid) at the Kilburn Herald, Jemima finds that her only consolation is food. Add to this her passion for her charming, sexy, and unobtainable colleague Ben, and Jemima knows her life is in need of a serious change. When she meets Brad, an eligible California hunk, over the Internet, she has the perfect opportunity to reinvent herselfas JJ, the slim, beautiful, gym-obsessed glamour girl. But when her long-distance Romeo demands that they meet, she must conquer her food addiction to become the bone-thin model of her e-mailsno small feat. With a fast-paced plot that never quits and a surprise ending no reader will see coming, Jemima J is the chronicle of one woman's quest to become the woman she's always wanted to be, learning along the way a host of lessons about attraction, addiction, the meaning of true love, and, ultimately, who she really is. From the Trade Paperback edition.

@gradcat

I'm posting twice today, I missed yesterday.

This is a case of "putting me off". Just because the author's name is printed much larger than the book's title. Tbh, I was confused at first about who is who, I actually thought the author's name was Jemima J. ?

Librarybelle Definitely! I prefer the other covers of this book I have seen. 5y
TheAromaofBooks The title in smaller letters than the author's name is definitely a source of aggravation for me! 5y
Andrew65 Just plain confusing, and a plain cover! 5y
gradcat You know what? You‘re right! Especially considering there is an author out there whose MC is named Jemima whose covers look kind of similar...I actually read this book a while ago...I think my cover is different. Also, I couldn‘t really understand what all the fuss was about...not much substance, imho.... 5y

Not sure whether I should read this. I detest books where the title is a lot smaller than the author's name. Plus, this cover is very ambiguous, the title could be Jane Green. Who does that?

CarolynM I read this quite a while ago. It's ok, but if chick lit isn't your thing, it won't change your mind. 6y
julesG @CarolynM Well, I like Sophie Kinsella, so I might give it a try. 6y
Caroline2 Yeahhh, that‘s weird!! 🤨 6y

TheAromaofBooks Having the author's name huge and the title small is a pet peeve of mine, also! Sometimes cover design makes literally no sense to me haha 6y
ladym30 I really enjoyed this book! 6y
eunoxia This is one of my favorite books. I usually don't read books like this. I'm into more mystery and thrillers, but this is a great story with a twist. Easy read. And satisfying. Highly recommend. 5y

Finally done with this book and it has been the first book in awhile that I didn‘t fly through. I thought it was alright and I‘m happy Jemima got her happy ending but it doesn‘t seem to be a book I feel like is going to really stick with me.

160 pages left. I probably won‘t be done before dinner but maybe when I get home I can knock out a huge chunk of that or better yet finish it off.

JaneyWaneyB Hope you are enjoying this book. Jemima J is one of my favourite books 6y

It feels kind of dull. I‘ll probably still finish it but it might take awhile. Does it get better ?

Redwritinghood I read it a long time ago, but I remember liking it. 6y
Maggie_Reads I read it a long time ago and I liked it. 6y

Tameeka It was difficult for me to get through. Especially after reading Bridget Jones first. 6y
BookishGirl06 @Tameeka I‘m only 140 pages in and I‘m finding it a little boring but I promised myself I‘d try to finish it. 6y
Tameeka I know that feeling! I usually give it a few more chapters to redeem itself and if nothing gets better, I stop. 6y
BookishGirl06 @Tameeka same. But I feel like I dnfed too many books lately. Everyone else seems to love this book. I guess I‘m the odd one out 😂 6y
Tameeka I tried to like it too and it did not happen! You‘re not alone lol!!! 6y

I find it kind of odd how the narrative will sometimes shift from first person POV to third.

gradcat I find that gives me the feeling of the ground shifting beneath my feet...most uncomfortable 😣 6y
Maggie_Reads I read that a few years ago. I don‘t remember it swapping back and forth with the POV but I do remember enjoying the book. 6y

I've found while reading some other reviews of this book that it mostly seems that you love it or hate it.

To me this book was a pretty standard "chick lit" type of book. At times I thought the main character Jemima was a little boring and the story was slow to start. It was also pretty darn obvious to me who she was going to end up with in the end. If you're looking for an easy, quick read I would say go for it. Other than that, maybe skip it.

Currently about halfway through this book. I got it at a library sale recently for a quarter. I like it pretty good so far but I'm still not 100% sure that I would recommend it. It's a little slow.

Pickpick

It's been ages since I read chicklit. But Jane Green never failed me.

Meskipun apa yang dialami Jemima tampak seperti TGTBT (too good to be true), tapi penulis tetap memasukkan bentuk perjuangan yang harus dijalani Jemima untuk mencapai titik balik kesuksesan/kebahagiaan? (tergantung lihat dari sisi mana) dan itu membuat cerita ini jadi cukup realistis.
Gue kasih 4/5 🌟
‌Highly recommended for those who love to read contemporary romance

#ChangedMyMindAbout

What I thought in my early twenties was sooooo romantic just made mid-thirties me angry.

Aside from the fact that it basically advocates eating disorders, the moral of this shallow tale is "Change yourself for a man." ???

RiotMom I am right there with you on this one. I loved this the first time I read it, but as I've gotten older, it's made me so frustrated and mad. 8y

Jane Green's one of my favourite writers but I didn't enjoy this.I didn't like that so much of the focus was on the main characters weight, understand the reasoning behind it but it made the other characters seem very superficial.Storyline was very predictable.Love Jane Green but afraid not this one
