The book brings you around the world to see other cultures and generations. This book teaches diversity, inclusion, and acceptance. For this reason, I believe this book would be great for building a tolerant classroom community. Also, because of it's written style, it can be used for independent reading. The terminology is simple and it is repetitive.

“Hidden Figures The Story Of Four Black women and The Space Race” by Margot Lee Shetterly and Laura Freeman (ages 6-9) Is a great book and now a movie about four African American women who conquer the world of science math and engineering while overcoming sexism, racism, and segregation. This book shows how 3 women paved the way for so many women. This also gives small biographies on these women in the back of the book.

Alexush This Book Is a biography that you can read aloud or do a readers theater with. This is also cool because you can watch the movie after the class RT. Whoever You Are dives into the concept of diversity and how each and everyone of us comes from somewhere different and may look or talk different, but that we all get sad, happy, and love the same. This is a fantastic book to read to your young students so they can begin to learn about diversity! #UCFLAE3414F19

Camrynm A useful EL strategy to use for this book would be 16: Integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. This strategy would be useful because the teacher could ask questions about diversity before, during, and after the book to see the students prior-knowledge on the subject and then find out what they learned. The UDL principle I would use would be 4.1: Vary the methods for response and navigation. 5y

This book is good for PR because students can read together and share their thoughts about the book after they read. Students can talk about their similarities and differences just like shown in the book.

EL strategy 45 would be fit for this book because it has to do with filling out a Venn diagram that compares and contrasts something. In this case, students can compare themselves and a partner. 5y

Whoever You Are by Mem Fox is a MF picture book that would be really fun to read as PR. This book gives great insight into diversity and tells it in a fun way that is so natural throughout the book. An ESOL Strategy would be 2. Which is promote cooperation in small groups. The students can pair up to read the book together and ask questions or make predictions.

Whoever you are is a wonderful read by author Mem Fox and illustrated by Leslie Staub! It is a RF read and has so many important messages. The UDL for this book is 2.1 because there are a lot of vocabulary words and symbols to incorporate in the story. There are several ESOL techniques to use but one would be number 2 because all the kids should participate while reading this story. All the children in your class can easily to relate to this book!

AmyPerezCubas An activity I would do with my class is go around the room saying how they relate to this story. Another is asking what kind of home they live in since the characters in the book lived in such different places. I would hand out a worksheet with it saying what they love, what makes them sad, and what makes them happy. Whoever You Are is a NF children‘s picture book written by Mem Fox and illustrated by Leslie Staub. This would be a great book to bring in during the first week of class. This book is about unity between people of different cultures. The context of the book is fairly simple which is why I would recommend this book for Kindergarten and First grade. AmeliaS21 This link provides resources and activities you can link to this book. One activity I found interesting was a “book walk” where the students go around the room and look at the pages of the book. You can have the students either write down or discuss the different landscapes they see. I really liked this book because it is important for students to understand the different cultures they may see in their classrooms. 7y

DrSpalding Love the idea of partner reading and the book walk. Technically it is not non-fiction because the children in the story are not real. What do you think the correct genre is? 7y

AmeliaS21 @DrSpalding @DrSpalding I wasn‘t completely sure of the genre. When I looked it up it said it fell under the category of NF which is why I put that! I do see now that since the children aren‘t real that it may fall under RF. 7y

We may look different or live differently or speak a different language but we all love and hurt and laugh and are connected by that same shared humanity.

And just as I'm getting ready to take this back to the library I read that Mem Fox (the author) is vowing not to return to the US after she was poorly treated by US customs officers on her most recent visit. Perhaps more people need to read this book.
