The Giver | Lois Lowry
post image
Pickpick

This SF 1994 Newbery Medal winner novel by Lois Lowry tells about a 12-year-old boy named Jonas who lives in a dystopian society that is colorless, ideal, free of crime and sadness. At that age, children are assigned jobs/roles, which they will train and do for the rest of their lives limiting the choice of an individual. The society is controlled by rules and tradition of the Elders.

sbombasi Jonas wanted change and made a sacrificial choice for the good of the community. This would be good IR/LC read.

This lesson plan allows students to think deeper about philosophical issues like the book, students would share their own experiences of distinctive memories growing up, have discussions about them and reflect on self-assessment.

This NF picture book written by Jerry Pallotta illustrated by Rob Bolster would be great for a RA to introduce students about the concept of multiplication. Using pieces of the Hershey‘s Milk Chocolate bar as parts to represent rows and columns can make it so much easier for students to understand the process of multiplication “facts” emphasizing the problems on the pages. I think it would be nice to use real candy bar in a lesson. #ucflae3414f19

This RF picture book written by Derek Munson and illustrated by Tara Calahan King would be good for RA. A boy named Jeremy Ross moved into a new town and his house is next to his number one enemy. His dad has the perfect recipe to get rid of enemies called Enemy Pie, but he would only agree to make it if he spends an entire day playing with the enemy!

sbombasi After hanging out with his enemy he seems to not be all that bad after all and actually wants to be friends with him. But, with the promise of making the Enemy pie…is it still an enemy pie? Was there anything nasty about the pie after all? Find out! This is a nice book for kids to learn how to make friends or deal with conflict with someone. #ucflae3414f19 5y

This RF, New York Times Best Seller novel by R. J. Palacio tells about a boy who goes by the name Auggie and all he ever wanted to be is look and be treated normally. Since he was born, he had major surgeries done to his face making him look extraordinary which too many people find uncomfortable talking or looking at him. This book goes through different perspectives of people mentioned in the story.

sbombasi After being home-schooled by his mom for four years, this will be his first time going to a mainstream school as a fifth-grader. This HF picture book by Patricia Polacco retells a story passed down to her about the trials and tribulations of two soldiers named Sheldon Russell Curtis (Say) who was a white soldier and Pinkus Aylee (Pink) who was a black soldier that was involved in the Civil War. Say was wounded in battle and Pink found him, brought him to shelter, and helped him recover.

sbombasi With the goal of surviving and winning the war, getting back into the war was a scary thing to revisit. This story involves the history between Confederate and Union troops, colored and white people, and fighting “the sickness” of slavery.

This would be good for an RA/PR, students can discuss with their partner the theme of the book and knowledge gained about the Civil War. #ucflae3414f19

This RF picture book by Patricia Polacco tells about a girl named Trisha who struggles with dyslexia. Throughout her years in school, everyone was able to read except for her which made her frustrated and thought she was dumb. Kids would make fun of her and not one teacher paid attention to her struggle, until Mr. Falker came along and believed in that she could read. He helped her as much as he could and finally so happily, she was able to read!

sbombasi This book would be great for an AS because this book is actually an autobiography of the author. This RF picture book by Peter H. Reynolds tells about a boy named Ramon who loves to draw until his older brother makes fun of his artworks. Ramon is hurt and hindered by what his brother said to him, leading to believe that his drawings don‘t look right. Positively, his little sister notices and admires his work in that they are unique. She describes that they might not look like real houses or boats, but they are “house-ish” and “boat-ish.”

sbombasi She gives a new look and appreciation for his art that Ramon rediscovers his love and confidence in drawing again with his style.
