What the Dead Leave Behind
What the Dead Leave Behind | Rosemary Simpson

Set amidst the opulent mansions and cobblestone streets of Old New York, this enthralling historical mystery by Rosemary Simpson brings the Gilded Age to lifein a tantalizing tale of old money, new love, and grave suspicion . . . WHAT THE DEAD LEAVE BEHIND As the Great Blizzard of 1888 cripples the vast machinery that is New York City, heiress Prudence MacKenzie sits anxiously within her palatial Fifth Avenue home waiting for her fiancs safe return. But the fearsome storm rages through the night. With daylight, more than two hundred people are found to have perished in the icy winds and treacherous snowdrifts. Among them is Prudences fianchis body frozen, his head crushed by a heavy branch, his fingers clutching a single playing card, the ace of spades . . . Close on the heels of her fathers untimely demise, Prudence is convinced Charless death was no accident. The ace of spades was a code he shared with his school friend, Geoffrey Hunter, a former Pinkerton agent and attorney from the South and a former Pinkerton agent. Wary of sinister forces closing in on her, Prudence turns to Geoffrey as her only hope in solving a murder not all believe inand to help protect her inheritance from a stepmother who seems more interested in the family fortune than Prudences wellbeing . . . Filled with richly colorful characters, fascinating historical details, and thrilling moments of suspense, What the Dead Leave Behind is an exquisitely crafted mystery for the ages. Advance praise for What the Dead Leave Behind Naturally I always gravitate toward any book set in old New York, and this one exceeded expectations. It has everything one could expect from a historical mystery: set against the blizzard of 88, a smart heroine pits her wits against an evil stepmother out to destroy her. Rhys Bowen, New York Times bestselling author of the Molly Murphy and Royal Spyness mysteries An engrossing, complex tale of betrayal and triumph that takes the reader deep into the heart of Gilded Age Manhattan. Alyssa Maxwell, author of Murder at Rough Point Rosemary Simpson vividly recreates the world of nineteenth-century New York City in this exciting debut mystery. Every level of society intersects as we explore a world in which corruption touches both the highest and the lowest and nothing and no one is exactly what they seem. Victoria Thompson, bestselling author of Murder in Morningside Heights A beautifully crafted mystery, full of intrigue and historical atmosphere, with great characters and the potential for further adventures. Catherine Lloyd, author of Death Comes to the Fair A wonderfully colorful cast of characters makes Rosemary Simpson's debut mystery a pleasure to read. Prudence Mackenzie's focus on law, and the depiction of New York City in 1888 is fascinating. Radha Vatsal, author of A Front Page Affair

This is a reread for me, so I‘m not going to post this as a review, since I reviewed it years ago. But, it was great to revisit this and refresh my mind for my IRL book club discussion.

So many details and a set up for a very interesting historical mystery series, everything from addiction to blizzards to the American Civil War to murder. I forgot about some of the topics from my last read!

Using this also for #52BookClub24 #AGrievingCharacter

Crazeedi Read this and enjoyed! 10mo

I was very impressed with the descriptions of the snow storm. I also loved that Prudence was treated so well by her father; they were very close and he treated her more like a son… as in, he taught her a lot of lawyer-ly stuff that a woman, at that time, would never normally have learned. Prudence is smart and I like how the men/lawyers she is working with accept that she is capable. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin There were a lot of characters, though, so I did tend to forget who was who at times, and it was a bit of a tangle/maze even once it was revealed how everything happened. I have no issues with how things ended and I will continue with the second book in the series. 4y

Between a pick & so-so. It‘s a seasonal read with a murder in a blizzard. Something about the level detail felt a little stiff, but it is a good choice if you need an audio book for multitasking.

I‘ve been a bundle of nerves lately, a lot due in part to today. This has been a year in the making - arranging the author of my library system‘s One Book program to visit the library system. I‘ve never done anything on this scale before; I‘m so excited and nervous at the same time. My library system is reading the tagged book this month, and in just a few hours, I get to meet the author.

If you haven‘t read these yet, please do. They‘re amazing

IamIamIam That's wonderful!!! Good luck! I'm sure everything will go off without a hitch! 5y

Today I announced my library system‘s One Book selection for October. My committee picked a good one - historical mystery with so much historic content, and a strong female character. I know a few on Litsy really liked this one as well.

Bonus - I was able to arrange for the author to visit my library...given our limited programming budget, this is huge.

And, though not 100% cozy, it‘s doable for #CozyInTheSun . It‘s a meatier cozy!

ferskner I've been wanting to read this. That cover! 😍 5y

I picked up this book off my #newyearwhodis list from @Librarybelle and could not put it down!!! Exactly the reason why I did not pick up other books on her list! I‘m in grad school. I have a paper due tomorrow. I have to be at the airport at 6AM. But I spent my day reading this book!!! Historical fiction, NYC, strong female protagonist. Character driven mystery. I will be recommending this!! @Nan2 I‘m thinking of you! #booked2019 lady detective

Chrissyreadit @Librarybelle I plan on reading books from your list through the year- this one was great!!! 6y
Crazeedi @Chrissyreadit this is a great series! 6y

Librarybelle I am so glad you liked it! Should I say there are two others in the series (I haven‘t picked those up yet)?? I picked up a few of the books on your list through Kindle deals and Book Outlet purchases, and I plan to read them throughout the year! I also have one checked out from the library. 6y
TNbookworm Great review! Adding to my list! 6y
Chrissyreadit @Librarybelle I downloaded the next one- and am about to work on my paper now hoping to read tonight. I hope you liked the ones I suggested. Because Of grad school my reading is off so it was harder to make recommendations. Im excited about several on your list- 6y
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen I‘m excited to see what you think. 6y
Chrissyreadit @TNbookworm I hope you love it too! 6y
Nan2 Sorry, been missing on here for awhile. The re-entry to work after being out so long sort of overtook my life! I‘ll put this on my tbr list. That‘s why I was on here! Looking for recommendations!! 6y

Set in the late 1800s, the story of a young society woman who's father has died and left a wicked step mother in charge. Her fiancee is murdered and off we go, an ex Pinkerton who steps in to help solve the mystery, but realizes the lady has a backbone and will help solve the crime. I rate this 3.5 ⭐ Definitely will read the next in the series

So, it‘s not exactly the #FirstSnowfallOnBrooklyn , but this book does take place in New York City in 1888, when the Great Blizzard hits the city, killing hundreds of people. The MC‘s fiancé is one of the victims...but did he die from the blizzard or was he murdered? She sets out to discover the truth. Fun mystery and can‘t wait to read the next in the series! #WinterWonderland

I decided to go back and read the first two books in this series when I unknowingly read the third one first. 🙄 I‘m glad I did. This first one was really good and helped set the groundwork for what came later. This one gives Prudence‘s background and explains how she and Geoffrey met and formed Hunter & MacKenzie, Investigative Law. Some macabre moments and really nasty villains add to the ambience. Now looking forward to the second one! 4/5⭐️

kspenmoll This sounds intriguing. Good review! 6y
Librarybelle I can‘t wait to read the others in the series! 6y
robinb @kspenmoll Thanks! I‘ve enjoyed both books so much that I‘m checking my library today for the second one. I love that Prudence was raised by her father (a judge) to be smart (he taught her law), strong and resourceful. But at 19 in 1880s New York, she‘s frustrated not to be able to use those traits as a woman to become a lawyer. She finds an alternative...where there‘s a will, there‘s a way. 💪😊 (edited) 6y

The first in the Gilded Age Mystery starts off with the Great Blizzard Of 1888. And death. But, was it Murder? As the story unfolds, there‘s much more sinister happenings lurking in the rooms of a recently deceased judge‘s house. Strong female character and a smattering of historical mentions and persons that made me exclaim often, “Found another one!”

If you‘re looking for a good historical mystery series, check this out!

robinb I really liked this too! 😊👍 6y

It's 70 degrees today, and they are calling for snow on Friday. Prepared myself for this by reading a FANTASTIC historical mystery set during the historic NYC blizzard of 1888. (Fun fact - this apparently led to the creation of the subway because this storm destroyed so many trains.) Story follows a woman whose fiancé dies in the storm, she's convinced it was murder, and sets her sight on proving this. Phenomenal story!
