New American Best Friend | Olivia Gatwood
22 posts | 21 read | 29 to read
One of the most recognizable young poets in America, Olivia Gatwood dazzles with her tribute to contemporary American womanhood in her debut book, New American Best Friend. Gatwood's poems deftly deconstruct traditional stereotypes. The focus shifts from childhood to adulthood, gender to sexuality, violence to joy. And always and inexorably, the book moves toward celebration, culminating in a series of odes: odes to the body, to tough women, to embracing your own journey in all its failures and triumphs.

These photo challenges are great because they make me move stuff up in my #tbr ! I searched “new” on my goodreads and this is the one I found. I love reading poetry especially about difficult topics! I see a trip to Barnes & Noble in my future. #auldlangreads #newintitle #poetry #deepintbr

I read this between Aug 16 & 18th and gave it 3.5 ⭐️ on Good Reads. The poems in this collection are easy to read. I didn‘t dislike this collection and I have another of Gatwood‘s books but I felt that it was repetitive. None of the poems necessarily stand out in my mind as an individual poem.

This book started my obsession for button poetry, because it was easy to understand. I struggle with poetry reading at times, but this book was a easy book to read through. The first poem was so relatable it set the mood for the rest of the book in my opinion. Later I watched some of her performances and read along with the book. Very enjoyable!

So excited to start reading. I‘ve heard a few of these read aloud, but now I can finally delve deep into the collection.

This was a lovely slim book of poetry. I discovered Olivia Gatwood after seeing a video of her reading “Ode to my Bitch Face” and “Ode to the Women of Long Island.” This collection was more of the same sharp poetry. Love.

This is a short collection of poetry meant for every woman. You will find yourself in these verses, maybe more than once. Raw, emotional and truthful. I read this in one sitting and now wish it wasn't over. I will share this with my high school students who are sure to love it too.

I‘ve read some truly horrible poetry by young women this year, so I was really happy to find something that didn‘t make me want to barf. I might pass this on to my 14yo, it seems more like YA poetry than adult (if that makes sense)

I love Olivia Gatwood. This collection is full of raw honesty and reality that I just couldn't put it down. We see Gatwood learn what sexuality is, and how that manifested for her. We hear her does that are so timely, and so honest that it makes you rethink so many things. This tiny little collection is really amazing and well worth the read.

I'm torn between this poetry collection being a pick and a so-so. I heard her perform Ode to My Bitch Face and it was amazing. I'm thinking if I heard more of these performed and the inflection behind them I might like them more.

I just saw a video of her performing one her poems from Button Poetry, and I really liked it. It was called "Ode to Bitch Face," which through her intro it sounds like it'll be funny, but it's not. https://www.facebook.com/oliviagatwoodpoetry/videos/1353627491361459/ STRONG LANGUAGE --

haileybean I didn't note that I LOVED the poem she performed. I had goosebumps. 8y
