She comes in the night. She looks into your eyes. One by one, she has taken us all. For generations they have died young, and now fifteen-year-old Iris and her father are the last of the Villarca line. Confined to their lonely mansion on Dartmoor, they suffer their disease in isolation. But Iris breaks her promise to hide from the world and dares to fall in love. It is only then that they understand the true horror of the Villarca curse, the curse of the bone-white woman who visits in the night, leaving death in her wake. 'With a ghostly face at the window, inexplicable events and a sense of menace hanging over every page, this is one chilling gothic novel' Daily Mail

Nothing against the writing, because it was lovely, but this book was not my vibe. I tried to read it 8 seperate times. It was long, boring , confusing with little payoff...for me

Mehso-so

Part of me feels I just didn‘t give this one a fair go. It‘s more literary than a scare-fest.

It‘s gotten some rave reviews so it‘s probably just me. I‘m going to have to give another CW for animal abuse/death. 😣

Wow! I read twelve books this month. It helped to do some readathons because that made me focus on reading. Seven of the books were library books and five were my own. Unfortunately my unread shelf number didn't go down because October was a big book buying month for me.

This is my usual reading spot. The chair reclines and I even have a cupholder.

Hi #ScreamsByMail friends - I went to the bookstore yesterday to snap pics of potential picks for #Round2 by women! Are there any of these that you have read and that I can take off the list. We can also do ANY OTHER Shirley Jackson, I just read the blurbs on these 🖤👻 I'll tag the books below. Thanks for your help! @kamoorephoto @scripturient @GatheringBooks @Reggie @danibolahood @BookishTrish

ephemeralwaltz This one contains 2 novels so it's a bit thick but we could choose one or the other :) 6y
scripturient Haven‘t read any of these and am fine with all of them. :) 6y
ephemeralwaltz @scripturient Yay! I'm rooting for another Jackson :) 6y
Reggie I haven‘t read any of them. 6y
GatheringBooks am fine with all of them too! awesome picks!!! 6y
ephemeralwaltz The Uninvited looks really good... If nobody picks it maybe we should use it for round 3! Anybody interested? 6y
danibolahood I'm good with all of them :) 6y
ephemeralwaltz @danibolahood Hooray I'm so happy! 6y
BookishTrish I am good with all of them ❤️ 6y
kamoorephoto I have a preference for The Uninvited! 6y
ephemeralwaltz @kamoorephoto It looks really good. I'm between that or another Jackson, which are significantly slimmer... 6y
ephemeralwaltz If you don't have any objection to Jackson I might pick The Bird's Nest for this round :) We can use The Uninvited for round 3 and you are free to use it as your pick as well! 6y
kamoorephoto That‘s good!! I think my pick already got voted for 😬 Maybe use it for next round; it seemed popular too. I need to catch up on this round a bit... 6y

I've been keeping to my October tbr pretty well so far. If that continues, this book will probably be my next read.

I have so many books I want to read in October! I won't manage all of these (I only read 2 or 3 books a month) buy I'm really ready to dig into some spooky books that I've been putting off over the summer 👻🎃💀
