The River King
The River King | Alice Hoffman
9 posts | 24 read | 17 to read
From the best-selling author of The Dovekeepers, The River King confirms Alice Hoffman as "one of our quirkiest and most interesting novelists" (Jane Smiley, USA Today). People tend to stay in their place in the town of Haddan. The students at the prestigious prep school don't mix with locals; even within the school, hierarchy rules, as freshman and faculty members find out where they fit in and what is expected of them. But when a body is found in the river behind the school, a local policeman will walk into this enclosed world and upset it entirely. A story of surface appearances and the truths submerged below.

I quite enjoyed this story. It‘s very descriptive and very much a slow burner. Not a lot happens really apart from the death of a boy who has been bullied. I was a little disappointed with the ending as I didn‘t think justice had been served. It‘s well written though, very Alice Hoffman with its magical realism feel. 3.5⭐️

Reading a physical book from my own bookshelves for a change - it‘s a reading group pick.

Beautifully told story that takes place on the campus of a coed prep school...one day a body is discovered in the river...who is brave/tenacious enough to investigate this so-called suicide??

If you hope humanity will transcend, this story will crush those dreams, although a sort of justice is served. Exquisite writing, too.

Here‘s why I love #Litsy (aside from the obvious of having finally found my people💕): It gives me a reason to sit in my library and really look at and think about all the books I have read through my life. To go back in time and remember when I read it, who I was then, what the world was like at that time; and to remember the actual stories themselves so long ago read, like this one read 18 years ago. #MyLifeInBooks #IAmSweetMarch #KingInTitle

Beautiful book. The plot was a little weak but the imagery stunning.

@Cinfhen
Started reading Alice Hoffman with The Dovekeepers, which I love! Have brought all her stuff after that and am slowly working my way through her back catalogue! Not read this one yet.

Cinfhen You know, I LOVE Alice Hoffman but haven't read this one either! I'm waiting on your review!!! 8y
TrishB @Cinfhen you know how long that might be 😋 8y

TrishB @rachaich great recommendation👍 8y
booksandsympathy The Dovekeepers was my first Alice Hoffman book too. I then read Practical Magic. The Museum of Extraordinary Things is sitting on my bookshelf, but I haven't read it yet. She writes a short story for ever issue of Faerie Magazine and her sister creates something to knit that goes with each story. Makes me want to learn to knit. 8y
TrishB @booksandsympathy The Museum of Extraordinary Things is lovely 💝 She is also fun to follow on fb. I mostly only stay on fb to follow authors! 8y
booksandsympathy @TrishB I'll have to follow her on there. 8y
