#PoetryMatters Day 22: #Sentence
#OnThisDay in 1889 Anna Andreyevna Gorenko was born in Odessa. Better known by her pen name, Anna Akhmatova, she was one of the most important Russian poets of the 20th century. Her clear, concise, restrained style stood out against the more florid works of her compatriots. At odds with her country's Communist government, she nevertheless chose to stay in Russia and document as best she could life under Stalinist rule. #HistoryGetsLIT
“...But there is no power more formidable, more
terrible in the world,
Than the poet's prophetic word.“
Remembering Anna Akhmatova on her birthday.

'You will hear thunder and remember me,
And think: she wanted storms.'
I have a lot of work to do today;
I need to slaughter memory,
Turn my living soul to stone
Then teach myself to live again.
