When I saw the #MiddleGrade #Horror prompt for #BBRC , I knew I had to pick a ghost story book by Hahn. While this one was engaging and I had to keep reading, the characters were incredibly horrible and mean, which kind of turned me off of the book. Lots of bullying in this book!

Set in 1918, during the flu outbreak in the US, Annie starts at a new school and is immediately befriended by Elsie, who is not the nicest person. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

This was such a stunning ghost story! Beautifully written. However, the thing that really stood out to me was how it took place during the 1918 flu pandemic, and how the similarities to COVID, (from all places shutting down to “anti-maskers” 🙄), made me CERTAIN it was written during 2020 and recently published. Nope. 2017. DEFINITELY hits differently when read now rather than the year it was punished.

Mary Downing Hahn is a great intro to Gothic lit for upper elementary kids. Her stories are just spooky enough. My daughter and I are enjoying reading through her books.

A creepy ghost story about a girl in 1918. I picked it up at #yallfest. And it was my first book for #5book5bingo (a book with a number in the title).

Mostly I didn't sympathize with any of the characters. They were all mean. But I did enjoy all the revenge stuff. 😈

I never thought Ms. Hahn could write a book I liked as much as Wait Til Helen Comes, but she has! It‘s set during the winter of 1918 when the Spanish Influenza was at its worst, and I think the historical element was what made it so enjoyable for me. I love books that mix genres!

Okay, yes this is a middle reader book but so are Rick Riordan's books and the Harry Potter series and I loved those so who cares. I enjoyed this although the main character was slightly bratty and whiny. She's 12 so there's that. I look forward to reading some more of Hahn's books.

One For Sorrow is a good, fast paced ghost story for young readers. Set in 1918 during the Spanish Influenza, this creepy old tale tells the story of a girl who becomes the victim of a vindictive and spiteful ghost after she bullies and taunts her when she [the ghost] is alive. Despite being set in a different era I think the theme is easily relatable to today's youth as bullying and hateful school yard antics are hardly a thing of the past. 👻
