The Revenge of Analog
The Revenge of Analog: Real Things and Why They Matter | David Sax
The more advanced our digital technologies, the more we come to realize that reality rules. David Sax reassures us surviving members of team human that material existence is alive and well, and makes a compelling case for the reclamation of terra firma and all that comes with it. Douglas Rushkoff, author of Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus A funny thing happened on the way to the digital utopia. Weve begun to fall back in love with the very analog goods and ideas the tech gurus insisted that we no longer needed. Businesses that once looked outdated, from film photography to brick-and-mortar retail, are now springing with new life. Notebooks, records, and stationery have become cool again. Behold the Revenge of Analog. David Sax has uncovered story after story of entrepreneurs, small business owners, and even big corporations whove found a market selling not apps or virtual solutions but real, tangible things. As e-books are supposedly remaking reading, independent bookstores have sprouted up across the country. As music allegedly migrates to the cloud, vinyl record sales have grown more than ten times over the past decade. Even the offices of tech giants like Google and Facebook increasingly rely on pen and paper to drive their brightest ideas. Saxs work reveals a deep truth about how humans shop, interact, and even think. Blending psychology and observant wit with first-rate reportage, Sax shows the limited appeal of the purely digital lifeand the robust future of the real world outside it.

Finished The Revenge of Analog by David Sax!

Here‘s a quick summary of my thoughts (which, yes I wrote in a Moleskine notebook that is officially my new book journal):

It‘s a good love letter to analog, but if you‘ve kept up with current events or pop-culture you know that vinyl, Moleskines, film photography and well designed board games are having a moment. The book also talks about why analog is useful in business, work & school.

ferskner Ooooooo nice handwriting! 7y
Pruzy @ferskner Thank you! It is 90% having a good pen, too 7y
ferskner So true! 7y

So this book is happening tonight.

What are your analog habits?

Aside from books (I love, love, love the feel of paper on my fingers), I really want to get into vinyl, but I have no space. I‘ve bought more Moleskine journals than I can count, but can never write more than a page in them before becoming self conscious.

Librariana Do single issue comics and graphic novels count? I cannot for the life of me get into them in e-format. I just can't! I'm also a complete nut about notebooks. I love them - Moleskine, composition notebooks... square grid, dot grid... it doesn't matter, I will find a use for them! 7y
Pruzy @Librariana Those definitely count. The smell of a fresh comic and then pulling them in and out of a plastic sleeve are such intense tactile experiences I feel like I have to handle comics gingerly! I feel like most of the notes I make during my studies are disposable so I just use cheap notebooks, wish I had the bravery to use a costly Moleskine though! 7y
That-Bookish-Hiker I have a small collection of vinyls. I want to add more but I have the same problem as you with the space. 7y

Pruzy @That-Bookish-Hiker Personally I wish CDs never lost their cool...but they seem so over priced and less versatile to music streaming services. At least with vinyl you get the whole experience that can‘t be ripped to your computer 7y
CouronneDhiver I don‘t know what counts as analog, but I have lots of old-school habits/hobbies/etc... my work friends always call me an “old lady” 7y
Pruzy @CouronneDhiver Let‘s hear them! 7y
CouronneDhiver No social media besides Litsy. I still use traditional email. I have a paper agenda/diary. I love photography - but using proper film, not digital. Crosswords. I read the actual newspaper. I write snail-mail letters. Yep, totally a grandma. At 30. 😂😂😂 7y
vivastory I'm still buying CDs, even if I buy a digital album I'll download & burn it onto a blank CD. 7y
Sarah83 I love listen to vinyl and I write all lists by hand. I think, I read only three ebooks, because I love the smell of paper. Besides I try to buy all the things I need in shops and not online. 7y
quietlycuriouskate I'd be lost without my notebooks and fountain pens. 7y
CoffeeK8 Real paper notebooks and day planners for scheduling and to-do lists. If it‘s digital I forget it exists. 7y
Pruzy @CouronneDhiver That‘s awesome! Do you subscribe to any papers? 7y
Pruzy @vivastory Now that is dedication! Where can you even buy blank CDs nowadays? 7y
Pruzy @Sarah83 Yeah! If only there were shops that were 100% tailored to my tastes! 7y
Pruzy @River_Voice What do you write? Just random notes or something more structured? 7y
Pruzy @CoffeeK8 Digital planners work well for me since I have a lot of repeating events and my schedule changes on the fly sometimes 7y
vivastory It's pretty difficult finding them. When I do come across them, they are always sold in bulk, typically stacks of 100. So, my stockpile lasts me quite awhile. 7y
Sha0102 I still use a paper agenda and notebook at work. 📒 7y

Read while listening to an old record. Fascinating and affirming (we are a self-selecting crowd).

“Why print? Because it is real.”

JanuarieTimewalker13 I guess we always crave something concrete. I can imagine this is the same for a musician...you would want an album or CD not just a download. 7y
vivastory There's an undeniable pleasure in print. It's presence is often more satisfying than a digital copy. Although I find Kindle to be the best way to tackle a door stopper. 7y

I had never thought of the ”catharsis of finishing” as a reason for preferring print over digital. Makes sense though!

Mdargusch I like that idea 🤔 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage That‘s brilliant observation. Thanks for sharing! 7y
TheWordJar Yes! Even though I usually read magazines from back to front (not sure how that ever started), it is satisfying to read it all. Same for a book. It‘s wonderful to finish a book, maybe riffle through the pages a bit, then close it with a satisfied sigh. 7y
BookishMarginalia @Mdargusch @BarbaraTheBibliophage 👍🏼— I also tend to read magazines back to front, @TheWordJar ! 7y
TheWordJar 🙌 I don‘t know anyone else who does that! Drives my husband bonkers! 😬 7y

Not any revolutionary info, especially if you're already on board with analog stuff, but I did like the examples from a perspective of psychology and entrepreneurship. It definitely scratched a nerdy itch there. And it gave me a whole list of records to buy, websites to check out, magazines to read, etc., so it was worth it.

Heute gab es nur ein Buch, aber ich finde es doch äußerst passend. 😂 Zumal ich ja auch selten zum E-book-reader greife 😂

I get only one book today, but I think, it fits perfectly. 😂 As I don't use my E-book-reader it fits twice. 😂

GODDAMN.

Not 10 minutes into this book and already there's a stupid, mildly sexist comment. "When GIRLS started returning to record stores, we knew vinyl was having a real resurgence."

I'll never understand why it's surprising to some men that women like good music and have good taste. Music isn't a gendered hobby! I don't play records with my vagina! Unnecessary.

Also, when they say "girls," most often what they mean is "women."

????

8little_paws Ugh gross 7y
Notafraidofwords Ugh I can't 7y
Hooked_on_books I think it'd be a pretty cool trick if you could play records with your vagina. 😂 Our society is so pathetically sexist it's obnoxious. 7y

This book seems tailored specifically to me. In my life analog never went away, but I love that the rest of the world is finally picking up on the fact that not everything is made better by turning it into binary code. I've read the first 25 pages and I'm already in love with this book.

I'm never good at sticking to a #TBR, so instead of a TBR list, I thought I'd try something new! This is my #monthlyreadingmantra: "I will read what I love & love what I read." I also included some books I think I'll love or that have themes that are important to me. I'm interested to see how this monthly reading mantra works at focusing my reading this month! #feistyfeb

Zelma Good decision. I don't do lists of planned TBRs for the month, so this is pretty much my mantra all the time. It works for me! 👍 8y
Merethebookgal Great idea! 8y
LectricSheep @Zelma good to know! I hope this helps me stay focused without feeling guilty if I don't "finish my list." ? 8y

LectricSheep @Merethebookgal Thank you! ❤️️ 8y
Zelma @LectricSheep I made a to-read list once for a New Year's resolution. It had 4 titles on it. 10 years later, I've read 3. 😂 8y
LectricSheep @zelma 😂 that's a pretty sure sign TBR lists aren't for you! 8y
vivastory "The Revenge of Analog" is near the top of my non-fiction TBR. 8y
LectricSheep @vivastory I really enjoyed the first chapter on vinyl records! I feel like he hadn't hit his argument's stride yet, though-- I think he's got a big point to make about the negative effects of digital tech. I love reading nonfiction writers I disagree with. 8y
vivastory @LectricSheep I am often more engaged with writing when I disagree. It can be tempting to mentally space out when you completely agree with their points. 8y
