The Girlfriend
The Girlfriend | Michelle Frances
The Girlfriend by Michelle Frances is a gripping and chilling debut psychological thriller, based on the fall-out following an unforgiveable lie. It looks at the potentially charged relationship between girlfriend, boyfriend and his mother, which most women can identify with, and locates it in an extreme but believable setting. A girl. A boy. His mother. And the lie she'll wish she'd never told. Laura has it all. A successful career, a long marriage to a rich husband, and a twenty-three year-old son, Daniel, who is kind, handsome, and talented. Then Daniel meets Cherry. Cherry is young, beautiful and smart but she hasn't had the same opportunities as Daniel. And she wants Laura's life. Cherry comes to the family wide-eyed and wants to be welcomed with open arms, but Laura suspects she's not all that she seems. When tragedy strikes, an unforgiveable lie is told. It is an act of desperation, but the fall-out will change their lives forever.

An uneasy look into how far a person will go when they‘ve been wronged. An different take on familial relationships; how they flourish and how they fail. Reminiscent to The Perfect Girlfriend.

I‘m finding this book to be a little stressful. The “girlfriend” is already being so manipulative to this poor mom and I am not even half done. 😰 No complaints about the writing. It‘s almost TOO good!

Update: We‘re back at the gate in the very closed terminal, waiting for at least 2 hours until a light for the plane arrives from Orlando (we‘re at the Tampa airport). Oh joy.

Bought this at the airport, as a little reward. I don‘t really enjoy the flight experience. (I‘m keeping my #JolabokaflodSwap book for tomorrow — thanks again @Lidia !) — we‘re aboard a super full, small jet with people with LOTS of packages, a flier with a fully-grown Dalmatian as a comfort animal, and for some odd reason, lots of people traveling in pajama pants. (By the way, some people are amazed their huge bags don‘t fit) 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😳😕

DivineDiana Safe travels! Hope the flight‘s not too long! Sounds crazy! 🤪 6y
CouronneDhiver I‘m not the best flier either... but that sounds like an extra interesting one 🙄 6y
MaleficentBookDragon Yikes! Safe travels. 6y
Kappadeemom I‘m amazed at the grown folks that travel in PJs 6y

Over bearing mother who is one step away from Norma Bates level of being in love with her son can‘t stand the fact that her son has met someone and is falling in love with her. I am so sick of this trope.

I listened to this on audiobook whilst going on dog walks and it was a fun easy listen. It‘s about the tension between a rich woman and her sons new girlfriend. It‘s a bit melodramatic at times but I did enjoy it! Nothing mind blowing but a good listen. 😊

KateFulfordAuthor Christine: If you like the dynamic of this story, may I recommend my debut to you? It has a sassy female narrative, a well developed cast of characters and a page turning plot. All the information you need (summary, reviews and more) is available in the link in my bio. Thank you, Kate. (edited) 7y
Christine11 @KateFulfordAuthor I‘ll definitely have a look at it! It sounds really interesting 😊🌸💛 7y

When Daniel meets Cherry, he is pretty attracted to her immediately so much so that he asks her out the sane day they meet, not long into their courtship Daniel takes Cherry to meet the parents and mom is not too thrilled with Cherry, but she does want to like her because after all, she is her beloved sons girlfriend. 🙄

DNF — at least so far. I put it aside a few months ago, a little more than a tenth of it read, and never resumed reading. It all seems a bit pointless: two women, the mother and girlfriend of a male character, don‘t like each other. Earth shattering. If I ever do get back to it, I‘ll have to start from the beginning because I won‘t remember much.

The Girlfriend was ok. It was an easy listen and I did want to keep going till the end. The story was a bit weak and I felt like the ending was an anticlimax. But it did have some good bits along the way.

The first half was good but it started dragging in the second half, ultimately ending with a predictable and disappointing thud. Pun intended.

Sharpeipup So it was a belly flop? Cool cover, at least...(puns intended) 7y
DebBates101 @Sharpeipup It wasnt all horrible, truly. I enjoyed the first half, maybe even up to the first 2/3. But the climax, yes, a belly flop. I will say that others might really enjoy the way it ended, though. I read a lot of Psy Thrillers and my perspective is different so I have to admit I am an exception to many readers of thrillers. 7y
RadicalReader @DebBates101 hate when endings fall flat especially when it‘s at the climax never been more disappointed than when books are a letdown 7y

Honestly? Don‘t waste your time. The characters are one-dimensional, the “suspense” isn‘t suspenseful because you know EXACTLY what‘s going down, and the writing isn‘t smooth at all. I‘m disappointed, because it sounded like it would be SO good, but...it wasn‘t. #thegirlfriend #michellefrances

Honestly, I‘m not loving this. There‘s something about the writing that‘s really annoying me, and the characters are just...I don‘t know, they‘re blazingly stereotypical and pretty ridiculous. But I‘m about halfway through, so I might as well finish it. #thegirlfriend #michellefrances

Oh my! My head is still spinning after finishing this & I've reread the ending twice!
What would you do if your son is suddenly in love with a girl that you just don't trust? And things go from bad to worse & no one believes you? I had to put this down as I was reading because Cherry, the girlfriend, was getting under my skin & I wanted to help Laura, the mom.
Thank you to NetGalley & the publisher for providing an ARC for my honest review.

I've actually already read this (#BookExpo prep) but now I have a little time on my hands and I'm ready to read it again and pick out the clues I missed the first time. A great thriller that had my loyalty continually changing between the main characters? I can see this working very well as a TV series or film. Definitely recommend if you enjoy psychological thrillers. Thanks so much to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for my digital copy.

*Provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review *A fast paced psychological thriller. I couldn't put this one down. I hated both the lead female characters. Frustrating in parts as, for these 2 women to be intelligent, I was annoyed at how stupid they were at times. The abrupt switch in the characters POV was confusing at times, The ending felt a bit rushed and the reason the book only gets 3*s.
