I never know quite what I‘ll get when I pick up a Sherman Alexie book, except that I‘ll be glad a read it. A troubled native teen who sees himself reflected nowhere positive and sees no future for himself starts down a dark road doomed to end in tragedy, and just when all seems lost he quantum leap style time travels into different situations and historical situations and slowly gains a wider perspective on the future‘s possibilities.

SamAnne Sherman Alexie is a hometown author for me. I have no doubt the allegations are true (coming on to aspiring women writers, students etc), but he is someone that I hope can find an authentic mea culpa, recognizing his misdeeds, path back from #MeToo. He is a powerful storyteller. His autobiography is absolutely wonderful. 2y

I grabbed this download on prime mainly because it was Sherman Alexie. I had no idea about the plot whatsoever, so I was pleasantly surprised at how excellent his transitions were from each time period. It was a short read, but well written, and is another great story by the Native American author that really makes you think about privileges you have in life.

Flight is the story of an orphan, Zits, who hates his life in the foster system. Zits leaps through time to learn about his family and Native American history.

Zits is an Indian teenager in foster care with some serious issues. When he takes steps towards becoming a mass murderer he finds himself time travelling to different situations that each teach him something about himself.
An interesting concept and funny in parts, sad in other parts.

Narrated by a teen in foster care, whose portrayal is a deeply empathetic and honest look at foster youth and their complex lives. We follow him as he makes a disturbing life changing decision, which takes him on a journey through history - a history of violence - to learn how we repeat this cycle over and over. Short, but powerful book.

Zits gets bounced around from foster family to foster family. He‘s disillusioned with his life and feels like an extreme act of violence is the only answer. Through a weird sequence of events he is able to experience life by flashing/jumping/waking up in other people‘s bodies. It‘ll break your heart then having you laughing and back to tears.

WOW. For such a short book, he did so much with so little. I was uncomfortable the entire time reading, especially on audio, because it follows this protagonist who fell through the cracks in society & fell into violence. It's frightening because it's so believable.

I love how Alexie introduced the character to empathy without hitting you over the head with it. The novel teaches a lesson without being overly moralistic. Now that's talent!

Man, the beginning of this book is really unsettling... It's terrifying how easily vulnerable people can be manipulated to commit violence.

I loved this book! There's something about Sherman Alexie's perspective that is so raw, enlightening, and yet humorous at times too. It is always a treat to read one of his books.

In Flight, we meet 15 year old Zits, his father abandoned him and his mother died when he was 6. He is shuffled from foster home to foster home and gets in trouble over and over. Until one day, he has a unique experience that may just change his life.

josie281 He is a fantastic writer. I haven't read this one yet. Adding to stack! 8y

An angry 15 yr old boy contemplating a violent act somehow gets transported into many other people throughout time to walk in their shoes. It's such a simple but necessary action to learn empathy and compassion. This was exactly what I needed post election. It gives me hope that people can change. The audio is great. TW for violence

Starting this short novel on audio. I've been despondent this week and hard time concentrating on real books.

So far great narrator, shifting timelines and some needed history. #ownvoices #WNDB
