Now You See Me
Now You See Me | Sharon Bolton, S. J. Bolton
Now You See Me is the first in the Lacey Flint series, followed by 2012's Dead Scared and 2013's Lost. "Bolton is changing the face of crime fictionif you only read one crime novel this year, make it this." Tess Gerritsen on Now You See Me "Really special: multi-layered and sophisticated, but tough too." Lee Child on Now You See Me One night after interviewing a reluctant witness at a London apartment complex, Lacey Flint, a young detective constable, stumbles onto a woman brutally stabbed just moments before in the building's darkened parking lot. Within twenty-four hours a reporter receives an anonymous letter that points out alarming similarities between the murder and Jack the Ripper's first murdera letter that calls out Lacey by name. If it's real, and they have a killer bent on re-creating London's bloody past, history shows they have just five days until the next attempt. No one believes the connections are anything more than a sadistic killer's game, not even Lacey, whom the killer seems to be taunting specifically. However, as they investigate the details of the case start reminding her more and more of a part of her past she'd rather keep hidden. And the only way to do that is to catch the killer herself. Fast paced and completely riveting, S. J. Bolton's Now You See Me is a modern gothic novel that is nothing less than a masterpiece of suspense fiction. A Kirkus Reviews Best of 2011 Mysteries title and one of Library Journal's Best Mystery Books of 2011.

When I got caught up on the Maeve Kerrigan series, someone told me to give the Lacey Flint books a chance while I wait for Jane Casey to write more. It was a good comp for Maeve. I think this was darker than the Maeve books, and actually scared me a little if I read too late. The final twist is a great one. I definitely want to read more to see where it goes.

My reads for May were much lower #s than usual, but I found a bunch of new to me authors. 5⭐ are the tagged book and I Take My Coffee Black. 4⭐ are Take My Hand, Beneath the Lion's Gaze, Vacationland, The Last Child, and No Time for Goodbye. The rest were 3⭐.

This is a dark book, but I was entranced by it. I‘ve got the second on hold at the library already. Lacey Flint is a terrific character, and the plot: holy hell. No, I didn‘t guess the final twist. At ALL. The book was published ten years ago, but I wasn‘t reading many mysteries then. And definitely not like this. But reading tastes evolve, and if you like strong heroines and literary, serpentine plots, this is for you!

A lovely morning!

Love Lacey Flint! #20Series20Days #Top20Series

I know there are a couple of novellas but are there additional novels @eanderson ?

eanderson Nope, that‘s it. She keeps teasing another book but she‘s been doing that for a few years now. 4y
swishandflick I loved these too! 4y
MicheleinPhilly @eanderson I suppose I could just read something else by her until then. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y

MicheleinPhilly @swishandflick Did you read the novellas? Considering it. 4y
Andrew65 Very enjoyable, loved the Ripper theme in the first one. I‘ve just finished one of the novellas which links slightly to the last book in the series. Tells us what was going on with Mark Joesbury, although Lacey only has a small part in it. Enjoyable enough and a quick read. @eanderson @swishandflick Shame not more books. 🤞 (edited) 4y
Andrew65 Read the first one in the Craftsman Trilogy and can‘t wait to get to the others. @eanderson @swishandflick 4y

#JoysofJune it is! My goal is four books, all published in June or July of any year. This fits in neatly with #readyoursign. I‘ve got multiple readathons going on now and I‘m . . . not reading much. But my FIL leaves on Monday, so I‘ll have more time after that. It‘s not time as much as it is focus and stress level. I *could* read, but I‘m surfing twitter instead. Ah, well. Bk10 of my #Scareathlon is finished. So far I‘ve managed 2.5 audiobooks, 1ebook & 7 full length novels, all of which were over 350pg long. And I still have two more weeks. This was the 1st in the Lacey Flint series, it was terrifying, it was graphic, it was really good. And the ending was a shocker. Highly recommend. #TeamSlaughter #ScaryScavengerHunt #ThatScaresYou 4points #PointsTotal-685

After interviewing a witness at an apartment complex, DC Lacey Flint finds a woman who‘d just been brutally stabbed moments before. Within 24hrs, a reporter receives a letter that links the murder to the Ripper murders over a century before, a letter that calls out Lacey by name. #Scareathlon #TeamSlaughter 1point #PointsTotal-282

My first 5 star of the year. DC Lacey Flint finds herself smack in the middle of a Ripper copycat case. This has a grittier feel to it which I enjoyed. A few red herrings and quite the twist at the end, I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this. Fulfills my first title in my #Booked2019 challenge prompt of "Female Detective" for the Winter season.

This book was a great start to the series. I liked the Jack the Ripper connection and found it very interesting. I liked the characters and the plot. There were a lot of twists and turns that keep the pages flying. I found the ending a little confusing but all in all it was a pretty good book. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series and would recommend this book to those who like mystery/thrillers.

Andrew65 I felt the ending was a bit of a let down. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I agree! It felt like a different book at the end. 6y

How do I review this book without leaving spoilers! 🤔 Here goes! This was an enjoyable book but wasn‘t as great as I thought it was going to be after the first part of the book. I totally loved this first part, but as the book progressed it changed direction & turned out not to be the book I expected from this first section & that was the book I wanted to read. So really a bit disappointed it didn‘t turn out to be that great book.

Andrew65 Still look forward to continuing with the series. 6y

eanderson I love love love this series!!! 6y
Andrew65 @eanderson I‘ve only read about a fifth of the book but can already see why! Hooked! 6y
Tove_Reads How are you doing so far? Do you get why Bolton is my thriller Boyne? 6y
See All 13 Comments
Tove_Reads I don‘t understand why she is not world famous as Dan Brown or some others. I find her to be the best of the best in her genre! 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Obviously only just started the first book, but based on that very much so. I find it strange the luck involved with being considered a top writer. Unpopular opinion here, but I feel there are a lot better writers out there than Dan Brown and J K Rowling, yet they get all the press. I have found a lot of great writers who are barely known and Sharon Bolton although is known to some extent could fit into this category. 6y
Andrew65 Some great self published writers out there but some get all the press who I do not enjoy as much. Don‘t get me started on award winners. Okay step away from the soap box Andrew. 🤭😶😂 6y
Tove_Reads Fully agree! Also John Boyne should be a known media figure and appear on every 📺 show and be in all magazines. I mean, he is famous, but nowhere close to Brown. There are so many better writer‘s in Brown‘s genre. Gayle Lynds. Gayle who? ☹️ 6y
Tove_Reads I have to say that there are many authors people have never heard of here, but I‘ve gotten the library to purchase them on Overdrive, and now they are really popular! Can you believe that before I asked we only had half of Boyne‘s and Bolton‘s books in Finland? 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I love Scott Mariani in that genre, as well as James Rollins and some others that are hardly known. Much prefer those to Dan Brown. Last 2 or 3 of his have left me bored and unmoved! 6y
Tove_Reads Don‘t get me started on all the other fantastic authors out there I‘ve gotten to Finnish libraries! I should get a commission 🤣 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I think Robert Goddard owes me a lot of money for publicising him on reading websites, amongst others. 6y
Tove_Reads I‘ve gotten the old Rollins to the library as well, Glenn Cooper too. Working on getting Cleeves and Mariani. They have been translated though, which is fantastic, but I like to read in the original language. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Some of my favourites. (edited) 6y

I loved this book. It was great first part of the series. The author did a fabulous job at throwing the reader for a loop. Once the entire plot was revealed, it had me swearing as the entire thing was brilliant. I highly recommend the book! Lacey Flint is the perfect badass women for these twisted, copycat Ripper murders. Mark Joesbury is the perfect match to her wit. But, will this push Lacey too far? Who is Mark Joesbury?

This book!!! Fast paced and gritty, with deeply damaged characters and scenes so dark & vivid they could give you nightmares. Author S.J. Bolton is almost as brutal as Mo Hayder. Add in an intricate plot, a fresh take on an old theory, and pain and anguish with the turn of every page, and this one's a winner. The best news - it's the first in a series! 5 stars!

Now You See Me | Sharon Bolton, S. J. Bolton
Pickpick

Oh my bleeping crap 😱 that was one solid thriller!! My jaw was on the floor for the last 50 pages - the author had me believing a million different theories and yet none of them were exactly true. Definitely picking up the next book.

mllemay Although maybe give this a pass if you're squeamish because the crime scenes are quite graphic 😬 9y
OSChamberlain The more graphic the better 😈 9y
mllemay @OSChamberlain I'm also of that opinion :) but I know some people find that stuff disturbing 9y
Juani19 Just finished this! Loved it! 9y
mllemay @Juani19 Yay!! I'm reading the second one right now and it's even creepier! 9y

I'm less than 10 pages into this and I already feel like I am covered in blood! Thanks Book Riot for the recommendation. I hope I'm not scarred for life by the time I turn the last page.
