The Girl in Green

From the author of Norwegian by Night, a novel about two men on a misbegotten quest to save the girl they failed to save decades before 1991. Near Checkpoint Zulu, one hundred miles from the Kuwaiti border, Thomas Benton meets Arwood Hobbes. Benton is a British journalist who reports from war zones in part to avoid his lackluster marriage and a daughter he loves but cannot connect with; Arwood is a midwestern American private who might be an insufferable ignoramus, or might be a genuine lunatic with a death wish--it's hard to tell. Desert Storm is over, peace has been declared, but as they argue about whether it makes sense to cross the nearest border in search of an ice cream, they become embroiled in a horrific attack in which a young local girl in a green dress is killed as they are trying to protect her. The two men walk away into their respective lives. But something has cracked for them both. Twenty-two years later, in another place, in another war, they meet again and are offered an unlikely opportunity to redeem themselves when that same girl in green is found alive and in need of salvation. Or is she?

Pickpick

This book is a perfect example of why you should never judge a book by its cover. I thought it would be a contemporary novel about ... you know ... a girl who wears green. Of course, yes, it was partly about a girl who wears green but it was also a fabulous war novel that takes place around the time of Desert Storm. Part mystery, part thriller, and absolutely intriguing, this author has me hooked.

Cinfhen Love your review!! And this author is so quirky & original!! Excited to read this one 6y

I haven't heard the audiobook (3.95 on Audible), but I loved this second book by the author of Norwegian by Night.

Despite the despicable American soldier/veteran, this is a great read. A true page turner. Sprinkled across this story of people trying to find some sort of redemption in or around war zones are truth bombs; delicious bon mots criticizing war, the armed forces, as well as the NGOs and peacekeeping forces that stay behind which heightened this reader's pleasure throughout.

In the book the quote is about ISIS, but I think the image applies.

silentrequiem Yes. Sigh. 8y
Laalaleighh The worst part of all of this is that the longer this goes on and the more people I know keep defending him, the more respect I lose for those people. The best part is getting to actually witness kellyanne conways real time physical transformation to a Sith Lord as she gives in to the dark side. 8y
DrJAdMerricksson Yeaa. I lost my three closest friends over this fool. They are die-hard Rump supporters. So is the rest of my family, who've finally branded me 'black sheep'. Horrified to realise how vastly different our values are. And so saddened. This is driving a wedge between family and friends that seems destined to end in another Civil War. 8y

I don't read many books that take place in the Middle East. No particular reason. But this much-buzzed novel caught my eye. Contemporary culture & the 1990s, political unrest, a return to Iraq, gaining perspective on a complex issue. I've got this on my list. Opening sentence: "Arwood Hobbes was bored." Many pop culture references. @hmhbooks out in January

Did not expect to be laughing within the first three pages of a book about Iraq...but it happened. A real page-turner with characters you won't forget. Willie was also impressed!
