⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A fascinating history of the pun, the place it holds historically, and how it shaped cultures.
It took me longer than anticipated to finish but I'm glad I did.

It‘s home! Thanks for all your great comments, #nfornonfiction crew! Danielle, puns in Shakespeare sounds like a fun paper to write and makes me want to reread Much Ado. Barbara, I haven‘t finished Down Girl yet, but will try to finish in the next couple weeks. Melissa, thanks for the cards along the way! I‘m glad we all read together again! 💕

BarbaraTheBibliophage Okay, no rush! Glad your book is home with all of our added “content.” 5y

And enjoyable little book about the pun, far more for its chapters about language development biologically and cross culturally than most of the puns themselves. 🤪

...and surprisingly a few insights that I‘ll be thinking about as I read more with the #ShakespeareReadAlong and wondering how many other layers I‘m missing in the plays.

I only shut the book for a minute and look what happened! 🤣

I thought my #NForNonfiction ladies would appreciate my pen thief, Bella, in action! Hopefully nobody in our group is allergic to cats...I promise I don‘t usually let them roll around on our books. 🤷‍♀️

BarbaraTheBibliophage Funny! 😹😻😻😹 5y
tjwill Cuteness! I have a cat too, and she does this kind of thing if I leave a book laying out too. 5y

This was a quick read, especially following on the heels of our group‘s previous pick! A bit rambly, but overall I enjoyed it. Will get it in the mail this weekend. #nfornonfiction @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @tjwill

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That‘s good to know! I‘m so glad you enjoyed it. I‘ll look forward to it....once I finish the one I have. 5y

John Pollack prefaces his exploration of puns with details of the world pun championship. This was the most intense part of his book. The rest ranged from snoozy to informative and mildly entertaining. The book is just riddled with puns! He slides puns into every paragraph, whether it‘s about brain chemistry, lesser-known punsters, or England in the Middle Ages. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

@BarbaraTheBibliophage ETA Tuesday!

Since I had my two helpers (my kids are ages 7 and 4) with me on my trip to the post office, we visited the little park across the street too!

BarbaraTheBibliophage Awesome—I‘ll watch for it! Still working my way through 6y
PerksOfBeingABookworm @BarbaraTheBibliophage Down Girl is a great book—for explaining misogyny, not because the content is fun to read. It‘s certainly a difficult read. I was able to see the author give a talk on this book as well as the first chapter of her upcoming book. I really appreciate the work she‘s doing on these hard topics. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @PerksOfBeingABookworm That‘s exactly how I‘d explain the book. I‘m envious you got to hear her speak and have a sneak peek at the new book. (edited) 6y

This book about puns gave a history of pun usage and an overview of what makes puns work or not. I love puns, but it did drag a bit in the middle. Overall, the ending pulled it back up from a so-so to a pick for me. It was very short but thoroughly researched, written by a former O. Henry World Pun-Off Champion.

#nfornonfiction @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘ll be sending it to you soon!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds promising. Mine‘s dragging a bit in the middle too, it happens sometimes. 6y

#TBRtemptation post 1! JP's a former World Pun Champion & speechwriter for President Clinton. Except in contemporary times when the pun is considered a lowly semantic art form, it has always been recognized as significant in revolutionizing language & conveying important information. In a humorous & straightforward manner, you'll learn what history, brain science, literature, anthropology, etc., all have to say about it.#blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Sace And my library has it! Score! *places hold* 8y
ValerieAndBooks I have this one, and it's good! The author won a big punning championship many years ago (he's from Ann Arbor, where I used to live). 8y
SaraRosett And without puns, where would we get cozy mystery titles? 😉 (edited) 8y
