Higher Power of Lucky
Higher Power of Lucky | Susan Patron
13 posts | 22 read | 8 to read
Lucky, age ten, can't wait another day. The meanness gland in her heart and the crevices full of questions in her brain make running away from Hard Pan, California (population 43), the rock-bottom only choice she has. It's all Brigitte's fault -- for wanting to go back to France. Guardians are supposed to stay put and look after girls in their care! Instead Lucky is sure that she'll be abandoned to some orphanage in Los Angeles where her beloved dog, HMS Beagle, won't be allowed. She'll have to lose her friends Miles, who lives on cookies, and Lincoln, future U.S. president (maybe) and member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers. Just as bad, she'll have to give up eavesdropping on twelve-step anonymous programs where the interesting talk is all about Higher Powers. Lucky needs her own -- and quick. But she hadn't planned on a dust storm. Or needing to lug the world's heaviest survival-kit backpack into the desert.

It is wrong to have snakes in dryers! This is not something that would ever happen in France. California is not a civilized country!"

I didn't think that this book was that good, but the way that the author goes into detail about the town and the way that the girl lives her life.

Mehso-so

Contemporary Realistic fiction and was written in 2006. This book is about a young ten year old girl who talks about how she speaks, her reason, and her feelings. She goes over her life and situations in depth. She explains her small town and how idolized the works of Charles Darwin.

Preteen Lucky lives in Hard Pan (population 23) with her guardian, Bridgette, and her dog, HMS Beagle. Her mom died 2 years ago and Bridgette, who is from France, came to the U.S. to care for Lucky. (How she came to be guardian is a little convoluted so I'll let Lucky explain it) Lucky is worried that Bridgette is planning to go back to France and leave her with a foster family. Lucky takes her future into her own hands. #NewberyChallenge

This was a very sweet book about Lucky, a girl who is searching for her higher power. Lucky lives in a very economically marginalized community and is being raised by her father's ex-girlfriend because her mother dies and her dad isn't around. She struggles with understanding that she is wanted and feeling secure in her relationship to her guardian - hijinks ensue.

Listening to this audiobook next!

Lindy ❤️this one. Also, it brings back memories of the scrotum debate: school librarians torn over whether or not to purchase this title on account of that word. 7y
Bibliogeekery @Lindy wow! How absurd! I'm enjoying it so far! 7y

Very good. For me, this was in between "pick" and "so so." Great character development, great writing, believable protagonist, but I wasn't drawn to her as I am to others. And I'm not sure why. Which irritates me I can't put into words why I didn't like it enough. Still a great read, won a Newberry as it should've, just wanted MORE from the protag. More something. #doreadittho #thehigherpoweroflucky
