Wartime intrigue spans the lives of three women past and present in the latest novel from the acclaimed author of Secrets of a Charmed Life. February, 1946. World War Two is over, but the recovery from the most intimate of its horrors has only just begun for Annaliese Lange, a German ballerina desperate to escape her past, and Simone Deveraux, the wronged daughter of a French Resistancespy. Now the two women are joining hundreds of other European war brides aboard the renowned RMS Queen Mary to cross the Atlantic and be reunited with their American husbands. Their new lives in the United States brightly beckon until their tightly-held secrets are laid bare in their shared stateroom. When the voyage ends at New York Harbor, only one of them will disembark... Present day. Facing a crossroads in her own life, Brette Caslake visits the famously haunted Queen Mary at the request of an old friend. What she finds will set her on a course to solve a seventy-year-old tragedy that will draw her into the heartaches and triumphs of the courageous war brides and will ultimately lead her to reconsider what she has to sacrifice to achieve her own deepest longings. Book 21

A Bridge Across the Ocean is a smorgasbord of a book--parts mystery, ghost story, and an original perspective on the WWII novel. It's well-written. The twist was predictable, but I enjoyed reading it. 3.5 stars

Thank you to my sweet friend Diane!! So nice of you to think of me on my birthday 🥳 I‘ve definitely been spoiled!! I have the lavender in the diffuser!! I may need a gallon 😉 love you!!

Soubhiville Keep an eye on your kitties if you‘re diffusing or otherwise using lavender! It‘s poisonous to cats! The vet clinic where I used to work has treated quite a few cats who had reactions, and one did not survive. (I don‘t use it at all anymore.) 4y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Soubhiville oh no!!!! I did not know that!!!! I‘ve only used it last night in my diffuser. Thank you Soubhi 😽 Do you have any suggestions as to why Felix wakes me up biting my ear and neck?! 🙀 4y
Soubhiville Lol. Cats are silly. I hope he isn‘t hurting you! Venkman likes to rub on faces, so I‘m often woken up that way. Felix is probably just trying to get some attention. Hopefully will grow out of it? 4y

Crazeedi @Soubhiville you mean even in a diffuser? So if they inhale scent it hurts them?? 4y
Soubhiville @Crazeedi yes it is my understanding that if they get it into their lungs they will absorb it and can get very ill. 4y
Soubhiville https://www.canadianveterinarians.net/documents/cats-and-essential-oils. There are lots of veterinary articles out there about it. @Crazeedi 4y
Soubhiville The Doctors I worked with discouraged diffusing altogether if you had cats, just to be safe. Some cats might be fine, but others could have extreme reactions. And there are a lot of essential oils that are dangerous to them. 4y
Crazeedi @Soubhiville thanks for info! 4y

An enjoyable book. Brette has the Sight and has fought it all her life. It is passed on through the women of her family. Brette is aboard the Queen Mary when a Drifter contacts her and tries to tell her something.
This story is told through the lives of 3 women, Brette. Simone and Annaliese. The timeline flows from 1940s to present day. If you enjoy a book with an otherworldly flavor, you will enjoy. Reminds me of Sarah Addison Allen's books.

#2019Book59
This book does a beautiful job of weaving together three stories that span several decades and two continents. The ghostly elements added to the character development and helped build the atmosphere. My only complaint is that the “reveal” at the end was kind of a let-down.

Hollie I finally made it up to the office and found my birthday card! It was a lovely surprise 😀 5y

7/10 Good read, this author tends to write very similar stories mixing the past and present. As noted in my review of another book by the same author, characters are likeable yet oddly 2 dimensional. The bit around the war brides coming to America has sparked an interest in doing more research about the war brides, which is the only reason the rating is higher than a 6.

Finished A Bridge Across the Ocean yesterday. It was a great, summer read centering around the ship The Queen Mary. I always wanted to pick it up and find out what happened next, and it had a some surprising insight and wisdom that I wasn't expecting. On the right are my some contenders for what to read next.

My "owned" TBR pile isn't nearly the size as many but with my paper and Kindle books, I have over 300 unread books. I get overwhelmed because then I have library books always becoming available and then of course there's the always growing list of books I want to read. Does this overwhelm anyone else? I make myself crazy sometimes instead of just....reading ?

Bklover I have decided to just wallow in the feeling. All those books, and at the rate I am going I will never run out! 👍 8y

An historical fiction story that bounces between two different time periods. The twist is the paranormal theme in solving the mystery. The characters of the past were interesting - not so much the one from the present.

Even tho I already have 3 other books started, I have to start this one tonight. I love this author so much. Even tho I'm not ecstatic about the slight paranormal element to this, I am excited that it takes place partially on the Queen Mary in 1946. My mom sailed that ship in I believe May or June of 46 as an infant when her mom brought her to America. Im also going to be staying on the ship in Long Beach next year. Can't wait!!

JacqMac That is so cool! 8y

I really enjoyed this historical fiction by a favorite author. Lived the alternating timelines with a few different characters whose lives eventually intertwine. The time period - WW II - is one I am immersed in at the moment, so it was interesting to have another take on that. Wonderful characters, beautiful writing, and last but not least for me, that lovely cover. Need to read more by Meissner!

I loved the way Meissner weaved the women's past into the story and how Brette was able to find things out. I loved how developed the "war brides" stories were so developed. I loved how this book was presented from the cover to the end. I will be reading this author again.????? for full review lovintoread.blogspot.com

Three women board the Queen Mary to meet up with their American soldier husbands after WWII. Only 2 get off the ship. Meissner merges this story with a present day character and you'll be intrigued.

This was fascinating and beautiful historical fiction that talks about WW2 and war brides and the RMS Queen Mary. It had interesting detail, but the end fell a bit flat to me. I did enjoy the book, and fans of Meissner's work will surely like this book. I reviewed an ARC copy of the book.
