Even Cowgirls Get the Blues
Even Cowgirls Get the Blues | Tom Robbins
The whooping crane rustlers are girls. Young girls. Cowgirls, as a matter of fact, all bursting with dimples and hormonesand the FBI has never seen anything quite like them. Yet their rebellion at the Rubber Rose Ranch is almost overshadowed by the arrival of the legendary Sissy Hankshaw, a white-trash goddess literally born to hitchhike, and the freest female of them all. Freedom, its prizes and its prices, is a major theme of Tom Robbinss classic tale of eccentric adventure. As his robust characters attempt to turn the tables on fate, the reader is drawn along on a tragicomic joyride across the badlands of sexuality, wild rivers of language, and the frontiers of the mind. From the Trade Paperback edition.

A significant book that discusses how significant (and insignificant) everything is and can be. A fun, novelty read that went by quickly and kept me invested. One of the main takeaways that I feel is important is to celebrate your differences and don‘t settle for normal - who even defines that word anyways? Also, the big author reveal at the end made me gasp, but then after a minute of reflection, was the perfect ending

Remembering this Paula Cole song linked my mind to Judy Collins & her song, Someday Soon, which in turn led from cowboys & rodeos to cowgirls to Even Cowgirls Get the Blues.(read ages & ages ago). Go figure!

kspenmoll @Eggs Like your term “ mash up”! Think its a good way to describe how my brain works at times! 😂😂 5y
SleepyDragon I have that CD you have pictured. ? I had the pleasure of seeing Collins perform a few years ago. She still has an amazing voice. She sang "Send in the Clowns," and it was the most beautiful rendition I've ever heard. 5y
KarenUK What a lovely voice.... thanks for the link 👍💕 5y

“A lot of life boils down to the question of whether a person is going to be able to realize his fantasies, or else end up surviving only through compromises he can't face up to. The way I figure it, Heaven and Hell are right here on #Earth. Heaven is living in your hopes and Hell is living in your fears. It's up to each individual which one he chooses.” I‘ve posted this before but I think it‘s a good one. #QuotsyMar19

It isn't my job making me sick these days but oddly I still think of this quote when I'm struggling to live a "normal" life working full time & letting people believe everything is fine. I took sick leave a year+ ago to take care of my mental health & had a downturn again a few months ago. I'm still fighting to find balance but I'm learning not to pretend I'm well when I am anything but. Hoping 2019 will be a #healthy year for us all! #QuotsyJan19

TK-421 Also, here's another quote related to mental health (I have no idea where I heard it): I'm not pretending to be sick, I've stopped pretending to be well. 6y
Leftcoastzen Hugs to you. Love your honesty.Life is more difficult day to day than most people let on.Hope that you know people are hopeful for you!❤️Hang in there. 6y
TiredLibrarian Good for you for taking care of yourself and being honest about your mental health. Sadly we're still in a world where there's a lot of stigma and misunderstanding. 💔 6y

Lreads Hugs. 💕 I‘ve learned the hard way that when I pretend to be okay it gives other people unrealistic expectations of me and what I‘m capable of. It‘s something I‘m working on, too. 🙂 6y

Itchyfeetreader This really resonates - I have just started a wellness programme at work and this comes up so often. I am lucky to work somewhere were flexible working is supported 6y
readordierachel It's so important to recognize and be honest about our struggles. Hugs ❤ 6y
GlassAsDiamonds I love this - we‘ve got an extremely stressful Q1 coming up and I‘m trying to actually be honest about the stress. Here‘s to the strength to be honest with the world about where we truly are. ♥️💪🏻♥️ 6y

LiterRohde Such great quotes. The second one especially hit home for me. It is my experience that besides my mother, very few people want to really know how you are when they ask. The few times I slipped up I get 😳. Anyway, all that to say “I getchya”. Hang in there. My arms are tired too. 6y
TK-421 Thanks @LiterRohde I totally get it about people not really wanting to hear anything other than "I'm fine, and you?" Here's to finding the strength to hold on even though our arms are tired 6y

While negotiating possible dinner plans, myspouse said if we go to our usual place he‘s just going to watch football all evening. I waved my book at him and said I‘d be fine.

Anyway, #illalwayslovethisbook because it‘s silly and ridiculous and reminds me of some special friends.

One of the funniest and most inquisitive books about perspective in the size of life forms both physically and emotionally.

I forced this book on my college boyfriend, and he loved it too; meanwhile the copy I gave my husband back in the day was misplaced and never read! A fun book in any case, though I felt a little like Sissy Hankshaw with her giant thumbs while trying to take this picture! #onebluecandle #12DaysofBookmas

Took me awhile to find the exact cover I had. This was a very odd present from a high school teacher. He taught me one summer at a gifted program, and we met up for coffee once when I was 17. At 36, I find a lot of this inappropriate...

BkClubCare Huh. Perspective doesn't necessarily mean anything will make any more sense. 8y
Megabooks So true @Riveted_Reader_Melissa ! @BkClubCare I think he was trying to flirt with me without crossing some line in his head. I was too young and naïve (and probably flattered) to discourage it. 8y

My 1st & forever-favorite Tom Robbins. Outrageous, raunchy, bizarre, hilarious, peppered with the most amazing random facts. My original copy, bought used at a church sale in Connecticut (unexpected, given the venue). 1976 print, handwritten notes about Alaska, seattle & Everly Bros inside covers.
