This book must have ended up on my massive TBR thanks to Litsy. Asylum is a rather dark story set in a maximum security hospital for the criminally insane in 1959. A setting right up my alley! Stella and her husband, Max, move onto the reservation of the asylum. Max is a psychiatrist. Stella meets Edgar, a patient, and is not deterred from interacting with him when she learns of his violent past.

My #TBR for #scarathlon2020 I have some other spooky reads on my shelf but trying to be realistic with my goals 😂 I‘ll also plan to finish ‘Troubled Blood‘ 🩸 Go #TeamSlaughter !!! 26 points

veritysalter I loved Bone China, I find Laura Purcell gets the creepiness factor just right. My daughter loves the Murder Most Unladylike books, I keep meaning to try them. 4y

Starting off today with some New Castle After Dark horror flicks.
Asylum, from 1972. With Peter Cushing, Britt Ekland and Charlotte Rampling.
A young psychiatrist applies for a job at a mental asylum but first must pass a test by interviewing four patients to try to figure out which one is the doctor he will be replacing.

I knew I had to listen to this one when I saw Ian McKellen was reading it. It was a really good book! I loved who the narrator was because he wasn‘t really a main character. It was cool to hear the story told through an outsider. In the end it was a sad story, but the twists and turns were unpredictable and I really enjoyed it.

Subtle, unsettling and creepingly brilliant. Stella and Edgar‘s dynamic was fascinating and raw, but what made Asylum especially powerful was the narrative voice. As narrator‘s go, Peter Cleave (who is fantastically well-named) stands out as testament to McGrath‘s brilliance, especially where characterization is concerned.

Finished this last night and not only was this a #rainydayread it matches the atmosphere of rainy days for much of the book. This story drew me in, moving faster than expected and kept me guessing as to what the final outcome would be. It challenges one's empathy and the notion of patient and doctor, who treats whom, who is "sick"," what is "well," and how do we get from one to the other.

I myself am trying to adopt this attitude with this character -it has gotten harder as the book has progressed largely due to her treatment of her child. That is something hard for me to empathize with and forgive.

Libro appena finito. L'ho amato soprattutto per l'analisi psicologica e i dettagli con cui l'autore analizza la mente dei personaggi. È un libro ricco di emozioni e a volte anche disturbante

Cinfhen Well played ✅😉💕how's your summer going??? How's that insomnia? MIL? 7y
DeborahSmall @Cinfhen insomnia as bad as ever. MIL seems to be doing well. No talk of discharge from the hospice at least. I think she knows she's in the best place, especially to handle the pain. The woman is a walking miracle, her consultant can't believe she's still here. I hope you are having a wonderful trip home 😘❤️😎 7y
Cinfhen Sorry the insomnia is back...glad to hear your MIL is showing signs of improvement 😊Absolutely amazing! My trip back is great ~ thanks for asking. 7y

This is a story of love, of madness and obsession. The ending is forever etched into my brain. This book is haunting. And I think it's a very good example of #taintedlove #junetunz

Cinfhen Sounds good but I don't enjoy novels set in psychiatric hospitals 😕 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Have wanted this one for a long time! Good to know it's just as good as I suspected! 8y
DeborahSmall This is my favourite Patrick McGrath. I have so much love for this book. First read it 18 years ago and a few times since ❤️❤️ 8y

CherylDeFranceschi @DeborahSmall Eeee! It must have extra scary if you were pregnant. Hands down my favorite McGrath, too! 8y
DeborahSmall It actually sent me nuts 😂 I cried for days as it freaked me out. I remember screaming at my ex, Sam's dad for 'letting' me read it while pregnant. When my hormones normalised, I read it again and loved it immediately. Then read everything by McGrath. I love Martha Peake and Spider but Asylum hands down the best x 8y

# booktober recommendations 📚👍🏼 Asylum is not pictured as it has mysteriously vanished from my bookcase.... my sister no doubt. I've read these 4 and a few others, also missing! All great stories particularly for October if you're looking great creepy tales. Particularly Spider and Dr Haggards Disease 📚🎃👻☠️📚❤️

When I was in graduate school, I became obsessed with Patrick McGrath and this novel in particular. This story is set in an insane asylum and features a doctor and his wife. Because of this book, insane asylums are now one of my favorite settings. I couldn't love this book more. So this is my #recommensday for the week. It's also a good cold weather read for a very late #fridayfunphoto entry for last week. #betterlatethannever

Keegz63 I am so in! Thanks for the review! 8y
Zelma That sounds great! I find books in asylums fascinating too. 8y
Owlizabeth I think I've read this...I hate that feeling, where you can't remember whether or not you've read a book! Did she try to arrange a dance at some point? Like a prom for the patients? 8y

LitHousewife @Owlizabeth There was something like that, but I'm not completely sure. I definitely need to reread it myself. I tend to lose details and only retain the way a book makes me feel. 😁 8y
CherylDeFranceschi This book is actually etched in my brain! So eerie! 8y
jennifersmeth This one has been on my list for a while. Thinking it would be a good October book..... Yes? 8y
WordWaller Ooh, I've been looking for a good insane asylum book. I tried a YA one last year that was terrible. Thanks for the rec! 8y

One of my library books. Really looking forward to read it as it has been on my TBR for a while. Back home I have seen the stamps and that the book has been borrowed for the first time nearly 20 years ago. I think this has been the oldest copy of a book so far I got from the library.

quirkyreader This is a great story. The film is also very good. 8y
LitHousewife This is one of my all time favorite novels. It got me started on a gothic kick. I hope you enjoy it! 8y
