Here there be dragons ... and aunties. Campbell-nominated author Zen Cho's short story collection SPIRITS ABROAD "refreshingly reimagine[s] the idea of home and tradition and family without offering tidy or pat resolutions" (The Star). Crawford Award winner. A Datin recalls her romance with an orang bunian. A teenage pontianak struggles to balance homework, bossy aunties, first love, and eating people. An earth spirit gets entangled in protracted negotiations with an annoying landlord, and Chang E spins off into outer space, the ultimate metaphor for the Chinese diaspora. The ebook edition of Zen Cho's Crawford Award-winning SPIRITS ABROAD features 15 speculative short stories, author commentary, and an ebook-only cover by artist Likhain (likhain.net). My first book by a Malaysian author. Wow. Simply wow. Short stories of various genres - literary fiction, #fantasy, ghost story, #romance, all steeped in Malaysian myths.
Grouped, very cleverly, in Here (various folk groups in Malaysia), There (Malaysians emigrated to Great Britain) and Elsewhere (spirit world), a compendium of very strong stories and a glimpse into foreign worlds. 4,5/5⭐

There are 10 short stories about local Asian folk lores, some I liked but quite a few I didn‘t. No doubt it‘s well written but the stories do take awhile to set in for me. Perhaps it‘s not my cup of tea, not my kind of genre. Overall I‘ve rated it 3/5. Pick this is you want to explore something new 😅

#BookReport
Managed to finally finish Spirits Abroad. It was very good but I've kind of been in a slump lately.

#WeeklyForecast
Plans this week include finishing Spear for book club and taking a big chunk out of the Stirling book. I've had to readjust my challenge expectations because of my slump so we'll see how this turns out.

I'm normally not one to pick up a short story collection but this was my book club's pick for Feb. There's an almost pragmatic reaction to the supernatural in this story which resonated with me. I would probably recommend savoring each story by reading one a night or something rather than binge through like I did.

Welp I had planned an afternoon of back porch reading until the dog decided to keep stealing the cover sleeve for my Kobo and attacking it. Now it‘s couch reading where the cover is completely out of reach time.

Eggs Decluttering is such a great feeling 3y
SusanLee @Eggs it is! I‘m feeling overwhelmed with the tons of unread books so I‘ve decided to either sell or donate it 😅 3y

I really enjoyed this collection of short stories from Zen Cho! I really loved Sorcerer to the Crown, and though this is different it was still so engaging and fun.

This is a book of short stories by the wonderful Zen Cho. There's a story in here called "The Mystery of the Suet Swain" that is based on the creepy Malay legend of "orang minyak", which translates to mean "oily man/person". It's a myth associated with men under evil influence who are on the prowl for women to molest and rape; the oil enables them to slip away and evade capture. Literal #slipperypeople. #Rocktober @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen

batsy (The myth seems to be a super creative way of displacing the problem of sexual violence due to patriarchy onto demonic possession and black magic. 😒)

Cinfhen OMG! Is that "cultural"?!? book sounds fascinating (edited) 7y
batsy @Cinfhen That's an interesting question! I'm not sure if there are "greasy men" myths in other Asian countries or in the region ? #researchtime 7y

For fans of Zen Cho :-
If you‘re able to get to central London, Zen will take you out for coffee, cake and a chat about writing, publishing, genre and fandom. I meant to post this last night!

I enjoyed this collection. Full of stories based in Malaysian folklore and culture, it showed me a different part of our world while also including the magical and speculative elements I love.

My favorite story was "Liyana," a story of quiet magic and women's lives with a tinge of sadness and sweetness. It also connects with nature, which I always appreciate. #readinginbed #photoadaynov16

Some of my short story/novella #tbr, plus a few I read recently. I've been on a serious mythic/dark fantasy short fiction kick lately. Such fun! #tbrtuesday
