Incredibly suspenseful and thrilling mystery! Iris Carr is traveling alone after a holiday with friends in Europe. After some unfortunate incidents, Iris barely makes it on her train home, and she finds herself in bad shape physically. Lucky for her Miss Froy, English governess, is there. Until she isn‘t. Is Froy real or imagined? Who would harm her? https://cannonballread.com/2021/03/the-lady-vanishes-elcicco/
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Travelling alone by sleeper train, young Iris Carr befriends fellow traveller Miss Froy. Upon waking from a nap, Iris is told that there never was a Miss Froy and she mistaken. Knowing she is right, Iris must fight against accusations of confusion, hysteria and insanity to save her new friend. #Scarathlin2020 #TeamSlaughter 15pts + 1pt

HOLY CRAP, THIS WAS SO GOOD! I guessed every plot point straight off, but White imbues each scene with so much tension that it didn't matter in the slightest. At its heart, THE LADY VANISHES is about the circumstances that might cause witnesses to fudge their testimony or doubt what they know, and it succeeds beautifully.
Be aware there's a fair bit of 1930s British xenophobia, though, and the text doesn't question it as much as I wanted it to.
Fancy new book + punny new beer.
I thought I was done with my random book-buying project, but I couldn't resist this. It's a forgotten crime classic reissued with an awesome retro cover to celebrate Pan's 70th anniversary.
