The Lady Vanishes
The Lady Vanishes: Bloomsbury Film Classics | Ethel Lina White
9 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
'Miss Froy?' repeated the baroness. 'I do not know anyone who has that name.' Exhausted after her vacation in Europe, the young socialite Iris Carr is set for a return to England. Aboard the train, Iris is glad to have the company of the elderly Miss Froy ? the only other passenger she can tolerate. But when Iris wakes up after a long rest, Miss Froy has vanished. Suspecting foul play, Iris is suspicious of the strange passengers surrounding her, most of whom cannot understand her. Those who can, however, have serious doubts that such a 'Miss Froy' ever existed... Iris' dream vacation soon turns into a nightmare voyage back to England, forcing her to explore the unchartered territories of both her surroundings and her own mind.

Incredibly suspenseful and thrilling mystery! Iris Carr is traveling alone after a holiday with friends in Europe. After some unfortunate incidents, Iris barely makes it on her train home, and she finds herself in bad shape physically. Lucky for her Miss Froy, English governess, is there. Until she isn‘t. Is Froy real or imagined? Who would harm her? https://cannonballread.com/2021/03/the-lady-vanishes-elcicco/

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Travelling alone by sleeper train, young Iris Carr befriends fellow traveller Miss Froy. Upon waking from a nap, Iris is told that there never was a Miss Froy and she mistaken. Knowing she is right, Iris must fight against accusations of confusion, hysteria and insanity to save her new friend. #Scarathlin2020 #TeamSlaughter 15pts + 1pt

veritysalter I watched an old film of it years ago with Angela Lansbury as Miss Froy. It‘s a great story. @LeahBergen 4y

HOLY CRAP, THIS WAS SO GOOD! I guessed every plot point straight off, but White imbues each scene with so much tension that it didn't matter in the slightest. At its heart, THE LADY VANISHES is about the circumstances that might cause witnesses to fudge their testimony or doubt what they know, and it succeeds beautifully.

Be aware there's a fair bit of 1930s British xenophobia, though, and the text doesn't question it as much as I wanted it to.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk This was made into classic film too! 6y
xicanti @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I plan on stalking the TV schedule so I can catch the next showing. 6y

Fancy new book + punny new beer.

readordierachel I can't decide which I like better, that book cover or the beer label. Both charming in their own way. 6y
xicanti @ReadOrDieRachel right? I couldn't resist either of them. 6y

I thought I was done with my random book-buying project, but I couldn't resist this. It's a forgotten crime classic reissued with an awesome retro cover to celebrate Pan's 70th anniversary.
