No Idea: Control, Liberation and the Social Imagination | Robin McAlpine
9 posts | 1 read
Almost every change in the history of mankind has come from an idea or vision which was shared by a small group of people which grew bigger. This is the social imagination. Almost every one of those ideas was opposed and resisted and almost every one of those people was persecuted or marginalised. This is the control of the social imagination. While we no longer burn our heretics, they are now caught up in a complex and powerful web of control which discredits and silences them. A sense of resignation -- or even hopelessness -- is encouraged in order to suppress new ideas at source. The result is that we live in a grossly unequal society in a grossly unequal world and yet we have no widely-shared persuasive ideas about how things should be changed for the better. This book argues that if we can understand the ways in which the social imagination is controlled, we can recapture it. If we can recapture it, ideas will come and change will happen.

BookishMe Happy for you about (1)... Don't get the hullabaloo over it and surprised it has wormed its way here. Do you remember the white dress - gold/ blue dress viral debate? Now it's some audio clip thingy ;p 7y
Kaye 1. It‘s stupid. Sshhhh. Don‘t tell anybody. 7y
wanderinglynn Ah. 👍🏻 Thanks @BookishMe - having my nose stuck in a book & ignoring the real world pays off occasionally. That dress thing was ridiculous. 7y

CouronneDhiver Carry on ignoring the mayhem... it‘s a way better strategy! 😊 7y
BookishMe @wanderinglynn absolutely - books make lovely escape! This is no less ridiculous methinks ;D 7y

[March09] Unfortunately I don't have any #Utopian novel for today's #MarchMadness. Maybe I prefer dystopian novels more. But I'd appreciate recommendations on utopian novels 🙄

somebooksaround No worries! I usually think of the Giver as Utopian and slowly dissolved into Dystopia - but I actually meant to have Utopian & Dystopian in the challenge so feel free to post either or none whatever works for you! Haha! Thanks for posting!! 😃 I have movers at my place so hopefully I‘ll be able to take some pics soon!! :D 7y
thereadingowlvina @josteele Thanks! Shall check out The Giver 🙋 7y

Litsy, I need your help! I've got the books for my #secretsanta, but I can't think of what fun, bookish things I can throw in for fun! I've been looking for bookmarks from my city and state, but maybe we don't really "do" touristy stuff? At least, stuff that's not football-related. ?
Any ideas are welcome and appreciated!

Owlizabeth Journals? A mug and cocoa? A book light or bookplates? 8y
drokka Maybe postcards, small calendar with local photos, writing utensils, genre bookmarks. Does your person mention hobbies or collecting? Maybe kind of pull from those? 8y
LauraBrook @Owlizabeth oooh, thanks! I don't want to take the chance of something breaking (forgot to add that it's going overseas), but bookplates are a great idea! @drokka Thank you! No hobbies from what I can tell, and genre is SF/F. Hmmm. Wish I had time to go to my favorite antique store before thanksgiving, they tend to have vintage postcards from here. I'm tempted to go to the airport and see if they have a store w touristy stuff! 8y

JPeterson Any local tea or coffee? That can go with a bookish mug? Mugs are at least a bit more sturdy for shipping? 8y
Ais The tea/coffee and mug idea is great! Or what about a bookish print, as that would travel pretty well also! 8y
LauraBrook @JPeterson Yes, both local tea and coffee, several options! I could even do a mix of different tea flavors from one of our local companies. @Ais A bookish print is a great idea! Dang, why didn't I ask this question earlier?!? Could've ordered some cute stuff. 8y
Ais Hopefully this will help anyways! I'm just waiting on the book I ordered for my secret Santa and I'll have the parcel good to go this week, love doing stuff like this 😊 happy shopping! 8y
Godmotherx5 @LauraBrook The coffee & tea suggestion sounded good. I love both when I'm reading. Sounds like a safe option. 8y

Me when trying to compile a monthly TBR pile. I have so many books I want to read, but each day my mood can change, and with it, the books I'd like devour. #novembertbr #aphotoadaynov16

britt_brooke Same with me! 8y
Shemac77 I make TBR piles then reorganize according to mood. That way I get to play with my books and become more familiar with my TBR stock. It's grand fun :)! 8y
Alfoster Yup!! 8y

Nuwanda I've been trying to make and stick with short lists (5-10 books) for the last couple months, and even that doesn't work. I'm a free-range reader! 8y
jpmcwisemorgan I'm running into a problem with holds in library books. They all keep coming up at the same time, even though I was pretty far down on the list for some of them. I thought I was ok so I didn't try to extend the hold. Oops. 8y
Cortg @jpmcwisemorgan Does your library allow you to suspend holds? Many do, you can put them on hold, then suspend the hold until a particular date. It's kinda awesome. 8y
BethFishReads I am a total mood reader. Can't follow a list 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Cortg Yes, I think I can but I was so far down on the list that I wasn't worried and then poof, they all showed up at once. 8y
prowlix I find when I try to make a list, it backfires and I read completely different books! I gave up unless it's a library hold 8y
Zelma Agreed! Mood reader here too. 👋 8y
SaraFair So I just start 2 or 3 and go with how I feel that day. Sometimes they get thrown back into the take back pile. 8y
Cortg @jpmcwisemorgan I feel your pain! 8y
Gissy Same here so I know the feeling! 8y
