"The story bounces over multiple decades, laying out Kaaros sordid past and assorted sins, but it never loses sight of the big picture, in which the machinations of aliens (whom the reader will find both understandable and frightening) and psychics are just the backdrop for a character-driven, morally gray tale of hope and potential redemption." Publishers Weekly, starred review "One of the most imaginative alien invasion scenarios I have come across..." Aliette de Bodard, Nebula and BSFA award-winning author of THE HOUSE OF SHATTERED WINGS "This thrilling, ambitious novel offers a deftly woven and incisive blend of science fiction, psychology, action, and mystery. Highly recommended." Kate Elliott, author of BLACK WOLVES and COLD MAGIC Between meeting a boy who bursts into flames, alien floaters that want to devour him, and a butterfly woman who he has sex with when he enters the xenosphere, Kaaro's life is far from the simple one he wants. But he left simple behind a long time ago when he was caught stealing and nearly killed by an angry mob. Now he works for a government agency called Section 45, and they want him to find a women known as Bicycle Girl. And that's just the beginning. An alien entity lives beneath the ground, forming a biodome around which the city of Rosewater thrives. The cities of Rosewater are enamored by the dome, hoping for a chance to meet the beings within or possibly be invited to come in themselves. But Kaaro isn't so enamored. He was in the biodome at one point and decided to leave it behind. When something begins killing off other sensitives like himself, Kaaro defies Section 45 to search for an answer, facing his past and comes to a realization about a horrifying future. 🎧 I found this book a challenge. It bounces around in time so it requires focus. Sci-fi story about aliens on earth in Africa. They live in a dome. They come out once a year to heal the masses that camp outside the dome‘s opening. The MC seems to be acquiring super powers. Fun read! Good narration.

Time jumps in a narrative have never confused me before. Despite year demarcation for chapters, I was occasionally getting lost. It‘s a shame as this is my only niggle because Thompson has created a vivid world & rich characters. Smart allegory has a future Nigeria being “colonised” again by an alien being that is physically altering humans close to its “craft”. There‘s an abundance of ideas and a complex MC in this exciting noir-ish sci-fi novel

The world building is excellent. I liked the shared mindspace created by alien fungus and enjoyed the book being set in Nigeria. The plot lost me a few times, but that's mostly because it was hard following the time jumps (between audio and the way I tend to process information). The side characters needed more characterization. I kept forgetting which woman was which. #Scifi

I finished my first book for the #JoysOfJune readathon!

This is a gripping near-future sci-fi thriller set in Nigeria. It‘s the first book in Tade Thompson‘s Wormwood trilogy that‘s been nominated for the Hugo Best Series Award. Highly recommended, especially for those interested in sci-fi by Black authors.

Whoa! Nigerian SF with aliens, a city (Rosewater)that encircles the alien biodome, psychics on the loose, intrigue, mystery, and amazing world building.I was of two minds about Kaaro, the psychic narrator; he‘s infuriatingly quirky and unlikeable, but his story is compelling. Looking forward to more reveals in the remainder of the trilogy. And zombies. And zombies.

You know how sometimes you read a book you really like & you tell your friends to “just read it because you‘ll like it” not because you think they should just take your word for it but rather because you know you can‘t describe it well enough to do it justice? Yeah, this is one of those books. A government agent (who can read minds) is tasked with finding whoever is killing others like him. Oh yeah, and aliens...and more. A good read. Recommended.

Late with the #SundayShelfie but here it is. This is the TBR stack closest to my bed & the one I plan to work through first over the next couple of weeks. Most are for me—the Star Wars books my son & I will read independently & then discuss. We have one more day of school—I‘m making sure we send kids home with as many books as they can carry—and then home until the end of a March. Uncharted territory—I hope everyone stays healthy & safe.

I am just nowhere near as interested in the MC‘s penis as he wants to think I am. I know the MC is explicitly described as “sexist” by a third party, I get it, but frankly this far into the book I am just plain sick of his dick.

Loved this sci-fi novel (1st in series) about Nigerian sensitives (psychics) who develop their talents after an alien invasion and the slow discovery by one of the sensitives of what the aliens are after and how they intend to get it. Also love the embedded critique of some of our current political reality. A great mash-up of sci-fi, psychology and mystery.

Really interesting premise and novel take on an alien invasion. I‘m curious to see where the story goes in the next two books and if he explains what happened to America further. I like the jumping back and forth in time for the narrative, but not sure I really care for Kaaro as a protagonist.

A speculative sci-fi story about an alien invasion, alien-enabled psychic abilities, and (so much) more set in futuristic Nigeria? There wasn't a lot of room to go wrong. There were so many layers to this story, and it was so well written (and often hilarious). The plot was unique, the characters were great, and the science behind everything was so well researched that it made the crazy world seem plausible. My expectations were exceeded tenfold.

The 1st of the Wormwood trilogy, this one took a little while to endear itself to me but when it did it made the sometimes frustrating & confusing work of understanding the timeline totally worthwhile. The premise is original & imaginative & the writing is utterly engrossing. The MC is a dislikeable anti-hero & the female characters of Femi, Nike, Oyin-Da & Aminat are strong, have agency & steal the show. The plot is ... cont. in comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️

readingjedi ...intelligent, complex & provides many a satisfying whoa WTF moments. There's also a pretty sly dig at Trump! I will definitely be checking out the rest of this trilogy. With thanks to Netgalley for this book. 5y
readingjedi Have to add that as impressed as I am by this book, I have a slight issue with the MCs constant erections, ejaculations & copulations. It's all a bit icky .... 🤢🤢🤢 5y

Hmm. I still don't really get it. There's a lot of buzz about this book, and I get the impression it's really wowed people whose tastes I normally share, so it's probably a me-problem. Possibly I am overly bothered by the protagonist's constant thing about sex. Every time I might've got into the story, the narrator got an erection or climaxed for no apparent reason. Ooookay then.

Clare-Dragonfly That does sound really annoying! 6y

Set in near-future Nigeria, Rosewater is a slow-burning and absorbing scifi that tells the tale of one man affected by the mysterious alien presence that sits at the heart of the city of Rosewater.

A vividly evocative setting, an intriguing protagonist, and an alien whose intentions are never clear - great stuff and an unexpected find!

Late start to #24in48 because ... life.

But I did some #audiocleaning and finished Rosewater. Which was great. Loved that it is set in Nigeria. The protagonist is ... complicated, which can sometimes be code for annoying, but not in this case. And the narrator was excellent. A strong pick. Very much looking forward to the second book of the trilogy.

I was absorbed in this first contact story set in Nigeria. The story shifts in time with each chapter. The present day is set in 2066, and alternating chapters tell the backstory of the main character and the arrival of alien life. The first in a series, this is an excellent beginning.

This book blew me away! It takes place in the future in Nigeria and reminded me of my surrogate mother's tales of growing up there. Because of Ogbomosho and akara, not the aliens and psychics also present in the story. I don't know that I've read anything quite like it before. I loved the main character because he hated Ayn Rand and liked Virginia Woolf. 5⭐s for my 1st finished #24B42019 @TheReadingMermaid @Andrew65
