I would use this book in my classroom to teach children about the importance of making the best of a bad situation, and when opportunity knocks, take advantage of it. Jack does both. When the beanstalk grows, he climbs and finds the giant's lair.

Fairy tales and fables are the types of literacy used in this story. Jack takes the cow into town and is offered magic beans in exchange for it. When his mother sees he's brought home beans instead of money, she throws the beans out the window and a great beanstalk grows into the clouds. Jack climbs the stalk in hopes of finding food.

I liked the part when the giants wife made him a lot of sausages to put him asleep.

An enjoyable version of the classic tale. I thought the illustrations were well done and the story was told in a way that is enjoyable for all readers. I especially liked how the wife of the giant was protecting Jack which was a twist I have never seen or read before.

Thee illustrations jump out in this classic book about a giant up on a bean stock and a boy named jack who believed in magic beans. It‘s good vs seemingly evil, but i always thought what the story might have been like if jack was friendlier to the giant.

This is only marginally book-related, but I'm producing an operatic adaptation of Jack & the Beanstalk for children, and tomorrow's our first performance. I can't wait to see a full house of young people experiencing theatre magic! (Pictured: my amazing Giant and his stilts.) #seemoretheatre #artseducation

readingjedi That sounds incredibly cool! Hope everything goes well! 6y

Jack and the bean stalk is a famous Traditional Literature story. I‘m sure most of us grew up hearing this story being told many times. This book is great to use as a storytelling or read aloud book. There are many awesome activities I found for this book. The following website includes great activities for rhyming, learning beginning sounds, and syllables. https://www.pre-kpages.com/jack/

V.DeQuattro A great UDL strategy for this book would be strategy 3.1. This book allows teachers to interact with students and allow the students to share what the previously know about this story and compare their prior knowledge to the actual book. A great EL strategy would be strategy 4 which also links the lesson to students prior knowledge. Also strategy 16 is great for the activities that I attached. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y

Does anyone else's library use Beanstack? I was looking for my library adult summer reading program and its online at Beanstack - I've never heard of this thing before! Anyone have any advice or know anything about it? It seems straightforward enough, but I'm curious about the platform.
Thanks!

Leelee.reads Never heard of it - looks intriguing! 8y
Graciouswarriorprincess My old library system in Maryland used it last year for summer reading. 8y
LitLogophile I just checked to see if my library has this and we do not ☹️ 8y

Caterina Looks cool! And I'm jealous that your library has an adult summer reading program! 8y
Cortg We use it. It's an online reading program. Each library system can tweek it for how they want to use it. We give a prize to register online. Kids get a prize for each badge they complete. Teens and adults are entered into a drawing for a larger prize depending on how many badges they complete. The nice thing is the school media specialist, I believe, can print off a list of their students that participated. You can also add books like goodreads (edited) 8y
CrowCAH Not sure. My library's summer reading program doesn't start till this coming Monday. 8y
LauraBrook @Cortg Thank you so much! The last time I looked at our adult summer program I was working at my library and couldn't participate. And, they used a different system entirely. This is really helpful - thanks again! 8y
MyNamesParadise I've used it at my library. My library's focus though is on children mainly and if you're an adult the prizes are lame. I just use Goodreads to keep track of my books! 8y
LauraBrook @MyNamesParadise I use GR too, but thought this might be fun to participate in. Since there is no mention of prizes or anything anywhere I suspect the prize will be hugely lame. Oh well, can't hurt to try! 8y
MyNamesParadise @LauraBrook true! I had to explain it to so many people at the library (I worked there part time) that I got fed up with and I didn't like how our system was using it. 8y

"If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales." Albert Einstein

Love that I'm instilling a love of books--and fairy tales--in my son. I hope he'll love them for many years to come!
