The accused was a slight, frightened man who haddeliberately broken the law. His trial was a Romancircus. The chief gladiators were two great legalgiants of the century. Like two bull elephantslocked in mortal combat, they bellowed and roaredimprecations and abuse. The spectators sat uneasilyin the sweltering heat with murder in their hearts, barely able to restrain themselves. At stake wasthe freedom of every American. One of the mostmoving and meaningful plays of our generation. "atidal wave of a drama." -- New YorkWorld-Telegram And Sun

#BasedOnTrueStory Spent my birthday exploring nearby Dayton Tennessee, site of the famous trial which found John T. Scopes guilty of illegally teaching evolution in 1925. A cautionary tale where too much sounds too familiar today. Drove by the courthouse and found this charming shop (Pizza, Books, & Ice Cream). #Aboutabook @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Eggs Lovely photos! A few years back I attended the play performed in a county courthouse - so amazing 3mo

It was pretty good. Its all about religion and the Darwin theory.

A fictionalized account of the 1925 Scopes "Monkey" Trial. I saw this play performed in an actual courtroom in a county courthouse

Mehso-so

Hilarious at times, but a little disappointing. I expected more substance. I expected either something more like _Andersonville_, or something funnier. It was not quite entertaining enough to be good fluff, nor incisive or exploratory enough to be much more THAN fluff. But then, it WAS published during the McCarthy era, so allowances have to be made for what questions u.s. writers back then couldn't safely ask or try too hard to answer.

I cannot handle the amount of secondhand embarrassment I'm experiencing for the William Jennings Bryan stand-in character. It burns.

Incredibly timely play, Based on the “Scopes Monkey Trial” of 1925, this play features a science teacher jailed for teaching evolution and two courtroom titans who battle over matters of science, religion and a person‘s freedom to think and speak. Play was a response to McCarthyism and is eerily reminiscent of our current world. https://cannonballread.com/2019/08/inherit-the-wind-elcicco/

“Progress has never been a bargain. You have to pay for it. Sometimes I think there's a man who sits behind a counter and says, ‘All right, you can have a telephone but you lose privacy and the charm of distance. Mister, you may conquer the air but the birds will lose their wonder and the clouds will smell of gasoline.‘”

"It's the loneliest feeling in the world-to find yourself standing up when everybody else is sitting down. To have everybody look at you and say, 'What's the matter with him?' I know."

I guess courtroom drama is more dramatic when it's #hotinhere?

I present exhibit A. (I'm pretty sure the trial in To Kill a Mockingbird was during the summer and it was another sweltering courtroom.)

BarbaraBB Good one! And I think your right! 6y

Play is over, to sold out crowds each night. Here is a view of beyond the bar in our courtroom, under blue light for a scene change. #PCTInherittheWind - such an incredible experience.

It‘s always lovely when you get the official transcript of the trial which inspired the play you are directing. Very cool stuff.

LeahBergen Cool! 7y
jlondon1963 I saw the play back in college and Abe Vigoda played Clarence Darrow. ACLU in St Louis had a after party to meet the actors. 7y

"I'm sorry if I offend you. But I don't swear just for the hell of it. You see, I figure language is a poor enough means of communication as it is. So we ought to use all the words we've got. Besides, there are damned few words that everybody understands." - Henry Drummond

Need to finish this tonight, should easily qualify as Halloween reading given the terrifyingly cult like nature of the creationists in it!
