The Coloring Book
The Coloring Book: A Comedian Solves Race Relations in America | Colin Quinn
21 posts | 7 read | 1 to read
From former SNL "Weekend Update" host and legendary stand-up Colin Quinn comes a controversial and laugh-out-loud investigation into cultural and ethnic stereotypes. Colin Quinn has noticed a trend during his decades on the road-that Americans' increasing political correctness and sensitivity have forced us to tiptoe around the subjects of race and ethnicity altogether. Colin wants to know: What are we all so afraid of? Every ethnic group has differences, everyone brings something different to the table, and this diversity should be celebrated, not denied. So why has acknowledging these cultural differences become so taboo? In THE COLORING BOOK, Colin, a native New Yorker, tackles this issue head-on while taking us on a trip through the insane melting pot of 1970s Brooklyn, the many, many dive bars of 1980s Manhattan, the comedy scene of the 1990s, and post-9/11 America. He mixes his incredibly candid and hilarious personal experiences with no-holds-barred observations to definitively decide, at least in his own mind, which stereotypes are funny, which stereotypes are based on truths, which have become totally distorted over time, and which are actually offensive to each group, and why. As it pokes holes in the tapestry of fear that has overtaken discussions about race, THE COLORING BOOK serves as an antidote to our paralysis when it comes to laughing at ourselves . . . and others.

Louise @kgriffith Are you currently at Mt. Holyoke College? If so, howdy, neighbor! I‘m just outside Amherst! 6y
kgriffith @Louise I am for part of the week, just transferred in this semester! 👋🏻 6y
ThatBookishGal OMG this is so me!!! I actually find coloring to be extremely stressful! I‘m too worried about the way it looks 6y
Louise @kgriffith Welcome to the Pioneer Valley! Be sure to check out The Odyssey Bookstore! They often have great readings, and the atmosphere is lovely! 📚 6y
kgriffith @Louise oh I‘ve been several times! 😀 There was a panel of YA authors on campus that was out on in partnership with Odyssey just a few weeks back, too 🤓 6y
Louise @ThatBookishGal I find it more relaxing to draw the whole picture myself. These complex mandalas just create stress with all those tiny spaces to color in! 6y

Louise @kgriffith 👍👍👍 6y
Mimi28 I still color in Lisa Frank coloring books, lol 😂 see my last post 6y
zzz Perfect👍💯 6y
Louise @Mimi28 I saw your Michael‘s Haul post! I am also a fan of the InkJoy gel pens! I really enjoy arts and crafts, but for some reason, I just can‘t get into the intricate coloring books. I think it‘s because the main work is already completed. I‘d rather draw or paint something from scratch. Enjoy your Lisa Frank books! 6y
Louise @JenIsAlwaysReading @diovival There‘s something strangely satisfying about that bold red chicken-scratch statement, isn‘t there?! 😂 6y
zzz @Louise yes indeed😂😂 6y
Purrfectpages This is the best! 6y

EllieDottie Haha me too!! 6y
Mimi28 Lol, I used to be into the intricate ones, but the drawings are sooo cool I get frustrated because I want them to be perfect and I can‘t live up to my own expectations, lol. I am buying the kids ones again, lol 6y
Louise @Mimi28 Good plan! 🤣 6y

This book deals with issues pertaining to race, but it's mainly about growing up in Brooklyn. As a Brooklynite, that's fine by me.

If you like Colin Quinn and his style of humor, you will love this book. He discusses the various races and ethnic groups he grew up around in Brooklyn. Definitely NOT PC.
