19 posts | 22 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano has garnered millions of fans worldwide with his sardonic take on Sicilian life. Montalbano's latest case begins with a mysterious tt tt with a Mafioso, some inexplicably abandoned loot from a supermarket heist, and dying words that lead him to an illegal arms cache in a mountain cave. There, the inspector finds two young lovers, dead for fifty years and still embracing, watched over by a life-sized terra-cotta dog. Montalbano's passion to solve this old crime takes him on a journey through Sicily's past and into one family's darkest secrets. With sly wit and a keen understanding of human nature, Montalbano is a detective whose earthiness, compassion, and imagination make him totally irresistable.

The Terracotta Dog, the second book in Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano series, opens with a mysterious tête-à-tête with a Mafioso, some inexplicably abandoned loot from a supermarket heist, and some dying words that lead Inspector Montalbano to a secret grotto in a mountain cave where two young lovers dead fifty years and still embracing are watched over by a life-size terracotta dog.

EadieB Montalbano's passion to solve this old crime takes him, heedless of personal danger, on a journey through the island's past and into a family's dark heart amid the horrors of World War II.
This one is better than the first book even though I gave the first book 5 stars. I loved this book. It was a great story and the characters were quite unique. The plot was good and trying to figure out who placed the bodies in the cave was interesting.

EadieB I love Montalbano and all his humorous antics and phrases. The Terracotta Dog is followed by the third title in this satirical and humorous series, The Snack Thief. I am really looking forward to the next installment. If you love humor with mystery then you will love these books. 2y

I noticed on GR that I rd bk1 of series in 2012 so #24B4Monday seemed a gr8 reason to read a page turner & it certainly was that as montaldo faces 2 threads, a supermarket robbery +gun smuggling, as well as 2 bodies which hark back to ww2 in a curious burial rite. Plus a gangster on the run handing himself over to the inspector. He is a great character but the description of food + drink had me yearning for a glass of red in a sea front cafe.

Cathythoughts A glass of red in a seafront cafe sounds 👌🏻 great jigsaw 4y

#24B4Monday
In honour of @Andrew65 who i think ranks this series very highly i at long last am starting book 2 after many years. I think it may be because I'm never keen on two books in volume 1.
I am 4 hours 45 mins into the challenge and just finished my last bk which I will post about later.

Cathythoughts Go Andrew 🥳wooohooo 4y
Andrew65 Great series and only gets better as you get to know the characters and Montalbano‘s quirky character. Know @crazeedi loves it too. A good start 👏👏👏 4y
Crazeedi @andrew61 you will enjoy it more and more! If you can find the audiobooks, I definitely recommend, I listened to a bunch on audio and the reader was excellent! All the characters quirks were enhanced 4y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 you know my all time fave series!! 4y

While listening to this I wished I had the book to capture the author‘s writing & some of the descriptions of Sicily, its food, its cafes, its streets, its countryside, its characters. Thank you Diane @Crazeedi for introducing & encouraging me to read this series. I am in love!!! ❤️📚🥰

Crazeedi I listened to the first 17 and read the rest as physical books. I have to say I maybe agree with you somewhat, but I'm very glad I listened to some, because I hear the voices of the characters and the correct pronunciations . Both ways are great. I will eventually read this series again, and I never do that, but I just love it 5y
Crazeedi @andrew65 another one joins our group! @kspenmoll Andrew turned me on to this series!! 5y
Andrew65 I love it when others find this great series. Good for a translated book for any challenges too. Welcome to the fan club @kspenmoll @Crazeedi 5y

4⭐ Second in the Montalbano series. 2 lovers are found in a secret cave, dead for 50 years. The cave was hidden behind another cave full of weapons. So the mystery, who put them there, with a few coins in a bowl, a pitcher of water and a terra cotta dog watching over them. Montalbano is on the case, he wont rest till he solves the mystery. Excellent!!

Andrew65 This was possibly my least favourite one in the series. Glad to see you are enjoying them. (edited) 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I liked it because he was deciphering the past. 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I'm doing audiobooks because thats all the library has. It's not quite as good in one way since I'm not seeing some of the Italian, but I'm hearing the correct pronunciation of those words!!🙂 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Be great for the names (!!) and pronunciations. 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 yes! And the next in the series is audio too, just downloaded it!! 5y

This was my #LetterT for #LitsyAtoZ in translation. I am still really enjoying this series - quick reads, good on audio, and funny despite the dark material.

Not what I expected, but once I adjusted my expectation, I really enjoyed it! The writing style is very masculine and it took me a bit to get used to it. Very much a story within a story. Fun and fast, and I will read the other books in the series.

So what do you do when when you've been working like crazy for 2 months, and your body finally gives out? You get comfort treats, drugs and restart a fun book that you started at the end of January. My own personal #bookpartyofone.

melrailey I think my body is giving out on me right now. One would think that with the long weekend I could recuperate but I realized last night I have almost every hour booked. Yikes! 8y

Mehso-so

Not sure if it was because it's an ebook or a translation but some of the translations seemed jumbled and a little hard to follow. Also a bit of a mix of which crime to focus on till the back half. Overall I loved that it was set in Italy and the final reveal was rather heartwarming even despite the horror behind it.

I have found my sweet spot with audiobooks, I think. It's in series- murder series, fantasy series, sci-fi series. When it's a series I can drift off and not really lose too many key details. This is the second in a series set in Sicily with a cranky, sneaky, introvert of a detective who takes on crime in his town. It's not a cozy murder series, by any means. I love the little Italian cultural details that appear in the translation.
