I ended up really loving this one! There were a couple of slow parts, but it was a lovely story. It didn‘t feel like typical British children‘s lit. There was more emotion and depth to it. I think this book will stay with me for a while. #childrensclassicread2020

Finally, an orphan who is wanted by 2sets of family members with different styles of raising children. Elizabeth Ann goes from being coddled to learning Independence with chores. And guess what? She thrives with chores and decision making. The author was a supporter of the Montessori method and you could see evidence in the book. I really enjoyed watching Betsy become brave and strong.

Butterfinger @TheBookHippie yes!!! This is the best way for children to learn - by doing. I did find it strange that the math facts were being learned by rote memorization instead of manipulatives. 4y

TheBookHippie @Butterfinger I have that on the questions to ask my Montessori and regular teachers about I think it‘d be an interesting conversation all together . We have a free public school section of Montessori I help in the 1-3 grade classroom . 4y

TheBookHippie @Butterfinger It‘s Charlotte Mason way of learning Charlotte Mason put a heavy emphasis on using high-quality literature, which she called “living books,” to teach children. She believed that education should involve the whole person, not just the mind. According to Mason, education is “an atmosphere, a discipline, a life.” 4y

Chrissyreadit @TheBookHippie that‘s awesome! I LOVED our Charlotte Mason Curriculum. We used it for 8 years- but High School became more unschool with them focusing on interests, passions and foreign language. How lucky you are to have a physical school for your son to attend. 4y

Chrissyreadit @Butterfinger if you‘ve heard the term Living books” that would be Charlotte Mason. We read amazing books, lots of nature and science, lots of experiential learning - it is very different from traditional education. 4y
