IT‘S TIME. 💀🎃👻 #spooktober
During the month of October, openers and closers clash together. The openers wish to open the gate to the Elder Gods, while the close try to keep the gate shut. The tale is told by Snuff, guard dog to Jack the Ripper. The book is a lot of fun and includes illustrations.

I read the tagged almost every year. I've also reread the Illuminate files several times.

I met Roger Zelazny when he was promoting this book at a sci-fi con. I would love to meet Neil Gaiman.

Another book from my #31DaysOfHorror marathon in October I‘m late on posting. I enjoy reading this every year, reading a chapter a day (even though this is a fairly short book). I generally like books that use classic characters (Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, etc), and they are so well done here. The new characters (the animal companions) though are the real stars here. The world is enchanting and puts me in the Halloween spirit every time.
This was interesting…it reads like a Victorian murder mystery with tons of creatures and horror icons. It‘s witty and unique enough to hold my interest. However, it has the limitations of many old mysteries in lacking character depth. So I was pretty indifferent once they started disappearing. The one character I absolutely loved was the “experiment man.” The entire book builds to the big ritual battle which has a nice twist to finish things off.
This book follows the adventures of Snuff the dog and his master over each night of October as they compete against others to be the first ones to complete a supernatural ritual. I don‘t know, the plot looks a bit murky, but this is supposedly a fun Halloween read! I was supposed to read it as part of a group read last year and didn‘t stick with it. So here‘s to reading it this year.

I've read the tagged book at least 5 times. It's a fun Halloween book.

I still find this book entertaining and reread it in October sometimes. Basically a bunch of horror archetypes and their animal familiars are scrambling to complete a ritual before the others. The story is told from the viewpoint of Jack's dog. Hilarity and spookiness ensues.
This is an entertaining and some times confusing (because of the number of characters) story about a dog named Snuff and the crazy supernatural game him and his master are preparing for 🎃

I ended up liking this book okay. I had to refresh my memory of some of spooky literature in order to get some of the references. If you are not familiar with Lovecraft, some of it won't make sense. But it was humorous, narrated by a dog, and my money was always on the cat.
4th book read for #OutstandingOctober @Andrew65

Also, the book was written in 1993 and refers to Romani people as Gipsies. No other apparent disparagements.
This book just isn‘t my jam, but I can see other people enjoying it.
Best part was that it was narrated by a dog!

About to dive into chapter one of #LonesomeOct for our read-a-long! Feel free to join in any time, and I'll post my thoughts here after I'm done. First, I need to make some food!
Looking forward to starting this fun chapter-a-day Halloween readalong tomorrow hosted by @MidnightBookGirl which has exactly 31 chapters. If you want to join in, use #LonesomeOct
As part of the #LittensDressedInBlood and all the other wonderful October challenges like #Scarathlon and #Screamathon, I've decided to do a re-read of A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny, which just happens to have 31 chapters, making it a perfect chapter a day read for October! Feel free to join me, using #LonesomeOct as the tag.
A quick fun read, that you can flip though in a day or read it one chapter per day, every day of October. I would say the first half of the book is just about discovering the plot, what is actually going on and what is going to happen at midnight of the last day of October. The plot is difficult to describe without giving anything away, it is mysterious and I loved putting all the pieces together.
An intriguing opening, but this one lost my interest as it went on. And that ending, huh? Huh! #toneproblems #RIPspoilerThisBookDidYouDirty
I saw an article about the best Halloween novel that you've not heard of, but I must admit I didn't actually read the article because the cover sold me.
Curled up and reading this seasonal tale with my own familiars, Pages and Alabama.

Trying to get a group of people to read this gem in October not an official book club or anything but there will be some mid and end book discussions. Join us...
Putting Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man and Sherlock Holmes together just before Halloween and having the story narrated by Jack the Ripper's dog sounds like a great idea, but sadly Zelazny doesn't really know what to do with his cast once he's got them and the Gaimanesque blend of creepy and whimsical never really catches fire. Pity.
I got this book as a gift in a Halloween book swap, and boy, am I glad I did! It took me a few pages to get into the rhythm and style of the story (Victorian, Poe, Lovecraft?) but then it hooked me. I love the creativity of both the story itself and the perspective form which it's told. The book is split into 32 chapters and it was suggested that I read one chapter every night during October, ending on Halloween. I plan to do just that next year.
I couldn't exactly say what it is about this book that makes me love it so much. Maybe it's the combination of neat and cheesy but I reread it every October.
“...some things seem to small for the Great Ones‘ regard, and a cat may know that which the Elder Gods do not.”
Re-reading an old favorite. Narrated by Snuff, the watchdog of an occult practitioner named Jack, the thirty-one short chapters chronicle the thirty-one days of a particular October. A group has gathered to play an ancient game with high stakes. The tale is told through the familiars of the (mostly) human players as they negotiate to alternately aid and confuse the other teams. But you can't say which team you're on untill the last moment.
#BookMail! 🎉🎉🎉 I‘ve been waiting for the tagged book for too long! And thank you sooo much to @Dolly for the Cruelest Month! 😍😍 so excited!! The Clockwork Mutineers is this quarter‘s “issue” for the #MysteriousPackageCompany ‘s #CuriosandConundrums subscription 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Great night (last night ☺️)
Every Halloween that coincides with a full moon, an odd group meet up. Some are Openers, hoping to welcome the Elder Gods to Earth. Some are Closers, hoping to shut out the Lovecraftian horrors.
This book deals with one such Halloween in which Jack the Ripper, the Wolfman, Dracula, Dr. Frankenstein, a Satanic Vicar and others play a round of this deadly game. Sherlock Holmes shows up too!
All narrated by Jack‘s pet dog Snuff.
This book has been name-dropping some of the Elder Gods along the way, but in Chapter 22 it goes full Lovecraft.

Alright, mood set! (You have to imagine the mini-lights)
I've never read any Roger Zelazny, but I've always loved this title whenever I came across it, so I picked it up to read this year.
If I'm understanding the premise it's about Jack the Ripper vs Sherlock Holmes, and Dracula and Frankenstein's monster get involved somehow... all told from the point of view of the Ripper's dog, Snuff.
31 chapters and the back of the book recommends one a day so that's what I'll do. #thefinalcountdown #Rocktober
I should read this again now that I might recognize more of the references, but I don't remember it being scary at all. A book about bad guys working to either destroy or save the world, narrated by Jack the Ripper's canine familiar named Snuff. #AllHallowsRead #notscary @Litsy
October is here and it's time for good dog Snuff to tell a story. 🐶🍁🎃
