This was a boy and his dog story, and I didn‘t know if I‘d like it (not a dog person). It was the best thing about the book.
The real world section develops the characters and story very well. The fairy tale section swaps in a whole new cast that mostly falls flat. And the adventure had no real stakes.
But maybe that‘s the point - fairy tales aren‘t all they‘re cracked up to be.

The message is simple enough - yet quite profound if you truly grasp its full potential. Your story - as it is - is important. Almost a year later, I finally finished this book. Amidst a pandemic reading slump, the monotony of daily life, and my own suffering, this book of big and small questions was important, though never easy, for me to read.

Simple enough idea - the end was obvious from the start; not a lot of surprises. But while the idea is simple, the execution - not so much. That‘s the value of this book for me. Life is scrutinized through the lens of comparison, and the photo taken often times develops into criticism, doubt, anger, fear - you know, all the good stuff that keeps a body healthy. 😳

At the heart of this time travel book that spans 500 years and explores bigs questions like the nature of reality, the meaning of life, and the end of the world, is an intimate portrayal of loneliness, grief, and the connection we all seek.

This one really got me thinking about what it means to be human. How do our experiences and expectations impact our relationships and responsibilities to those we love and the world writ large?

Overall, Gwendy‘s story for me was about creativity, construction vs. destruction, secrets, fate vs. free will, and man‘s efficacy in his own life and the world.
The Button Box was full of magic and wonder. The story should have been left here.
Magic Feather was written sans King and lacked any magic whatsoever. It was forgettable.
Final Task is dark and somber, highlighting the price paid for such a power as that contained within the box.
“[I feel like] I‘m losing my mind but in a slow, achingly beautiful sort of way.”
That quote sums up what it is like to read this book. The plot is ridiculous, the narrative frames are bonkers, the prose is beautiful, and the experience is wonderful - unless it isn‘t.

“I‘ve been trying to stay real
and true and proud of who I am
All those ideals of how to look
I‘ve been trying not to care
But I‘m still holding my breath
I‘m still watching every step
I‘m still tip-toeing away
when I‘m getting too ashamed of myself
Though I‘m mostly quiet
I‘ve got a lot to say
but nothing seems to please you
so I‘ll keep it to myself 👇

“Imagine a summer night. It's warm enough to not wear a hoodie and you're biking with no shoes on. Your friends are laughing and joking, biking next to you. If you're biking fast enough and keep your eyes focused in front of you the traffic lights turn into golden shooting stars above and beside. It reminds you of magic.”👇

This book is one of the most difficult books to explain, but also difficult to stop reading. I‘m still not sure what I just read. Was it comedy, horror, metafiction, satire? Yes. And because of that it is also it‘s own thing. I think. One sentence, I‘m like 😊👍 “OK this is good”. Next, I‘m like 😉 “Yup, I see what you did there”. A few sentences later, I‘m like 🤣. And then - 😳 or even 🤢. The book on the whole left me 🤯. 👇

“My liege, and madam, to expostulate
What majesty should be, what duty is,
Why day is day, night night, and time is time,
Were nothing but to waste night, day and time.
Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit,
And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes,
I will be brief.”

“Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly. Be yourself. [W]hatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.”

“Procrastination may be the enemy of productivity, but it can be a resource for creativity. Long before the modern obsession with efficiency precipitated by the Industrial Revolution and the Protestant work ethic, civilizations recognized the benefits of procrastination. In ancient Egypt, there were two different verbs for procrastination: one denoted laziness; the other meant waiting for the right time.”

“[M]emory...is everything. [I]t‘s the filter between us and reality. You think you‘re tasting this wine, hearing the words I‘m saying, in the present, but there‘s no such thing. The neural impulses from your taste buds and your ears get transmitted to your brain, which processes them and dumps them into working memory - so by the time you know you‘re experiencing something, it‘s already in the past. Already a memory.”
