Plum Island
Plum Island | Nelson DeMille
20 posts | 44 read | 14 to read
Taking the best elements from two of his most outstanding bestsellers, The Gold Coast and The General's Daughter, Nelson DeMille combines the breathless suspense of an expertly wrought murder mystery with his wry perspective on a peculiarly American social scene to deliver an enthralling and compelling story. Wounded in the line of duty, NYPD homicide detective John Corey convalesces in the Long Island township of Southold, home to farmers, fishermen -- and at least one killer. Tom and Judy Gordon, a young, attractive couple Corey knows, have been found on their patio, each with a bullet in the head. The local police chief, Sylvester Maxwell, wants Corey's big-city expertise, but Maxwell gets more than he bargained for. The early signs point to a burglary gone wrong. But because the Gordons were biologists at Plum Island, the offshore animal disease research site rumored to be involved in germ warfare, it isn't long before the media is suggesting that the Gordons stole something very deadly. Suddenly a local double murder becomes a crime with national and worldwide implications. John Corey doesn't like mysteries, which is why he likes to solve them. His investigations lead him into the lore, legends, and ancient secrets of northern Long Island -- more deadly and more dangerous than he could ever have imagined. During his journey of discovery, he meets two remarkable women, Detective Beth Penrose and Mayflower descendant Emma Whitestone, both of whom change his life irrevocably. Ultimately, through his understanding of the murders, John Corey comes to understand himself. Fast-paced and atmospheric, marked by entrancing characters, incandescent storytelling, and brilliant comic touches, Plum Island is Nelson DeMille at his thrill-inducing best.

Three stars is generous. I started out enjoying the MC's snarky attitude, despite him clearly being a male chauvinist pig. Had the book been half the length (easily do-able without disturbance to the plot), I might have rated it higher.

I started the series because a friend/neighbor enjoys it. I still like him just fine, but I don't feel particularly inspired to continue the series.

Reading w/Tom during the country's isolation. We were planning to read it on our road trip (which has, obviously, been cancelled). 😭

JaclynW Sorry to hear that your trip got canceled! Take care. 5y
Bklover I loved this book!!! 5y
TheAromaofBooks Sorry about your trip!! Hopefully it can be rescheduled sometime! 5y

Nute I hope that you have the opportunity to reschedule your road trip holiday to the near future. It‘s best to stay safe now. Take care!💕 5y
Reggie I love this book! John Corey is so snarky, lol. 5y
JoyBlue @Reggie Agreed! 😂 A fair number of my bookish friends didn't like that character, and won't read the series. I acknowledge that he's a bit of a pig, but I'm OK with his general snarkiness. We've all got our own comfort levels. It's all good. . . . 5y

I enjoyed the mystery in this book and the info about Plum Island which is a great setting. But, I agree with the other Littens who said that the main character, John Corey is just too sexist and unlikeable to continue the series.

Melissa_J I ended up really liking the mystery in this book, but oh my goodness was the main character ever a jerk! 6y

I wanted to read this for quite awhile as I‘ve found Plum Island, a federal research facility off the coast of the North Fork of Long Island, to be intriguing. The premise of the mystery of two murdered Plum Island scientists sounded interesting. We visit my in laws on the North Fork so I‘m familiar with the area. Unfortunately, the main character was such a chauvinist that I couldn‘t enjoy this book. Don‘t think I‘ll read more of this author.

Melissa_J I finished this one a few weeks back. I ended up liking the mystery, and will try another in the series because of it, but felt the same way about the main character. He was a total jerk. 6y
claffy_reads My favorite Demille is Charm School. I haven't read it in a long time, so I'm not sure how it reads against my modern sensibilities, but I remember it being excellent. 6y
Ncostell @Melissa_J While I didn‘t care for the main character, I did find parts interesting, such as the pirate history associated with the area. It did have its redeeming moments. 6y
Ncostell @callielafleur. Maybe the protagonists of his other series are a little more tolerable! Not sure I will read more of this series but perhaps another of his series may be more to my liking. 6y

What a fun book! It had everything a mystery-lover could want--murder, intrigue, deadly bacteria, pirates treasure, and a smart-ass narrator. It was funny and suspenseful--I will definitely check out John Corey's other adventures!

GypsyKat Oh fun! I love a good pirate book! I'll be adding this to my TBR list a.s.a.p! 7y
AmyG I listened to this. Yes...fun read (or listen). 7y
AceOnRoam I've only just discovered this author. How many have you read? 7y

Fall lacrosse season is upon us! Also, I totally thought this book was going to be about pirates... ? The skull and crossbones totally registered "pirate" before it registered "death". ??‍♀️ I'm a spaz. #ItsACrimeThriller #MaybeThereAreModernDayPirates #NoWonderMyMomRecommendedIt

Melissa_J My daughter played lacrosse for 1st time this year (box not field) and loved it! I was hoping there would be a fall field lacrosse team she could play on so she doesn't have to wait until spring to play again, but there are no girls teams 😢 7y
AndreaReads @Melissa_J Oh, what a bummer! I was feeling bummed because our program is not nearly as big as it was in Texas, but at least he has a team. I'm glad she loved it! It is such a fun sport! 7y
Bklover I do love John Corey though! 7y
Reggie This book was hilarious to me. @Bklover I also love John Corey but the later books scared the hell out of me because they make you wonder if these things actually happen behind the scenes. 7y

I just love Nelson DeMille and his humor through his books. "While investigating the murder of a young Long Island couple, an NYPD detective is stunned to find that they may have been involved in dealing genetically altered viruses." John Corey, the sometimes goofy MC of several of DeMille's books, is all I can come up with for a #scruffyheadednerfherder. #characters2017. There!! I didn't miss a day!! This was a fun challenge. Thanks @LibrarianRyan

Reggie I read this book over 10 years ago and I will never forget meeting smartass John. He made me laugh so much even when what happens in this book and the others after this one scare the hell out of me. Especially the one about the M.A.D. plan against the Middle East. Yikes!!!!! 7y
Bklover John Corey is one of my favorite characters- my favorite with him is still Plum Island! @Reggie (edited) 7y
