You should read this outdoors. Bonus points if you're on the beach. I particularly enjoyed the essays where Oliver meditates on nature's small details.

These essays are 🔥.
A must read.
More than one shell collector in this household.
The "quietly devastating" description of this book is spot on:
"I should have used her name so much more... I threw away thousands, millions of chances to savor it in my mouth. When I spoke about her I would say 'my wife.' When I called her I said 'love.' When I messaged her I wouldn't even greet her. I wrote pithily, as if we were immortal: 'You home for lunch?'"
Is there anything better than starting a new book on a 3-day weekend? Got this (translated) beauty from The Booksmith in SF. #translation #booksmith
Another weekend prepping for #readersworkshop. Love this quote by Francine Prose: "writers are most commonly being told these days: their characters should be likable and sympathetic so the reader can care about them... But masterpieces survive in which all that's expected of us is that we be INTERESTED in the characters, engaged by their fates, intrigued by their complexities, curious about what will happen to them next."
Giving Austen another chance because a bookish friend loves her so and because Francine Prose is such a fan.
The cover art is ALMOST as magical as the stories in this collection. Ausubel continues to astound me.
Light Labor Day reading? #readersworkshop prep time.
"Because being aware of what is happening in our era and choosing to do nothing about it has become unacceptable."
Processing my thoughts on this while the pup naps. Dark. Illuminating. Haunting. A study on the destructive qualities of the male gaze. Aridjis packs the book with memorable scenes and details.
This book is EVEN BETTER THE SECOND TIME. My pick for #readersworkshop is one I shove into everyone's hands. We focused on how Roy uses details and repetition of those details to develop characters and create this magnificent, tragic world. #dogsoflitsy
This was more so-so than pick, but I finished it and enjoyed it. Would have been a terrific New Yorker article...a 250 page book felt a little stretched. Fascinating story and loved learning about Timbuktu's literary heritage.
Oh, you know. George Saunders just summing up the meaning of living in the shortest 340 pages you'll ever read.
Me, starting this book: what the crap is th...
Oh. Oh! OHHH!
#beachreading
I felt this was about 200 pages too long, with many side stories and diversions. If it were written a little tighter I think I would have enjoyed it much more. #gnibookclub
When you want to read but your #dogsoflitsy's bed just looks so comfy. #gnibookclub
When you're too lazy to swing by the library to pick up your hold so you check out the e-book. Any other #gnibookclub-bers on Litsy??
tl;dr English can throw some serious shade. 😎
Reading buddy award goes to Floof! #dogsoflitsy (this was before it started raining...)
"She had only recently realized that one was old for a long time."
#readersworkshop
Starting this book that writers are all crazy about, apparently. Franzen says it's superior to any novel by her contemporaries Roth, Updike and Bellow. Ok, let's do this. #readersworkshop
After slogging through a few challenging books, this is shaping up to be perfectly readable.
Top post-its are recipes I've tried and will make again (15 so far!). Side are recipes to try. Loving this cookbook. #litsycooks
This is Balthasar. He's named after the dog in the Forsyte Saga. He likes to sleep while I read. #dogsoflitsy @lemonlime799
Long weekend? Check out my picks of movies and books that are better together. Watch this, read that: http://wp.me/p2LNxS-Rw
Morning commute made possible by coffee, MARC train, and Mr. Whitehead.
To call this book a love story is like calling Doctor Zhivago a love story - it is much more than that. You can feel the despondency of living in the Stalin era where everyone is listening and informing and no one can be trusted. There are similarities to Solzhenitsyn, but less intense. In fact, this is a good novel for someone who wants to get a taste of Russian literature or who wants a lighter version of it. PUB DATE: March 14
It's too real. 😓
Executive orders written by House staffers who had to sign NDAs? 😕
The content is a challenge, but when you read this for language it is a treat. Like this poetry underlined right here: alliteration, repetition, rhythm. Can't wait to discuss this at #readersworkshop on Thursday!
Yea, this looks like a wonder! 🙌 #litsycooks
Oh, yeah. Now I remember. This is a ridiculously challenging book to read. (It's the book I picked for my February #readersworkshop book club) (puppy snores help calm things down) #dogsoflitsy
Man Booker and Nobel winners = $1 at library book sale! 🙌
My special order came in today at my indie. Really one pan cooking is the only way to live. 🍳
Would be a perfect #weirdathon book. Man loses his wife and a crow (yes, a crow) moves in to help him deal with his grief.
Freezing rain survival guide:
1) fingerless mittens
2) a good book
If you haven't read Alice Munro, get to that immediately. But read slowly! The beauty is in her plain, spare language. More on that here --> https://t.co/p9VEopSQgF #readersworkshop
Excited about my indie's #readbroader challenge for 2017! This could count for two of the 20 categories.
Anyone have tips for discussing a short story collection as a book club? Prepping for #readersworkshop book club where we'll look at Munro's Shaker box simplicity.
Saturday night = puppy sleeping, we're reading. #dogsoflitsy
Book club prep while pup naps. #readersworkshop Munro is a master short story teller.
This book has changed my reading life forever. I am now a more thoughtful and critical reader. It's had such an impact that I'm even doing a book club based on it in 2017 - #readersworkshop at Curious Iguana in Frederick, MD. Join me! http://curiousiguana.com/event/readers-workshop/2017-01-12/
Day 3, book 3. Put this one on your list! Short diary-like read of a woman's experience of three Egyptian revolutions - as a girl, teen and then as an adult. The voice is 💯. #dogsoflitsy
