I enjoyed this funny, sweet and at times, moving book.
Millie Chandler, a 30-year-old receptionist, had her heart broken in a public way by a cheating co-worker boyfriend. She‘s also dealt with and witnessed bad behavior/hurt feelings from other co-workers, family and friends. She decides to get her true feelings out about these moments through drafting emails that were never sent…until they were. This is the premise of the story. How does ⬇️

robinb Millie, a self-professed people-pleaser who wants to be liked, fix things with basically everyone in her life? We follow her as she tries a little bit of everything to make amends.
While I understood Millie‘s motivations (I too tend to be a people-pleaser), there was a bit too much self-flagellation in my opinion which in turn became a bit repetitive. However, she does grow and realize that she needs to be more of her authentic self and be ⬇️
11h
robinb accepted for who she is and how she feels/thinks. I really liked Millie but at times felt her apology period was just too drawn out. Jack, also a co-worker and a live-in-the-present, be-true-to-yourself and the-heck-with-what-others-think kind of guy, becomes a friend/counselor, helping her navigate her new reality. He was great and really what she needed at that moment in her life. Millie‘s friends, Petra, Cate and Ralph, were the shining ⬇️ 11h
robinb lights here, however. Loving, supportive straight-shooters who were there for Millie through thick and thin no matter what. Louis did an exceptional job with those characters.
All-in-all, a good book…perhaps a bit too long and repetitive in spots…but with a nice growth arc. Oh, and a wonderfully romantic and sweet denouement. 4.25/5⭐️

Mind Games | Nora Roberts

Pickpick

This thriller adds a paranormal element to the mix (as Roberts often does). Twelve-year-old Thea and her younger brother Rem always look forward to their summer two-week stay with their Grammie in the Appalachians of Kentucky while their parents take a couple vacation. However, a horrific event sees them permanently uprooted to live with Grammie. Thea, who has a “gift” that is not spoke of, discovers that this ability runs through her mother‘s ⬇️

robinb female line including her beloved Grammie. With this gift, Thea is able to identify a villain that she later discovers possesses the same skill. As he maneuvers to be released from prison, will Thea be able to thwart him and release herself from his mind games once and for all? I did enjoy this, especially the family aspect of Grammie, Thea and Rem and the love interest‘s (Ty) and his young son. However, the paranormal aspect got a bit confusing⬇️ (edited) 12h
robinb for me sometimes. Not to give anything away, but I found it complicating to figure out what could or could not be done with that skill. The storyline also did drag in certain spots.
Roberts is a master with suspense as well as drawing definitive characters, so in that sense, this one was a success. 4/5⭐️

I loved this sweet story and its lovable characters.
Georgie Rowe is an outspoken and opinionated young governess who believes that children should enjoy a childhood that is everything hers was not…namely filled with fun, laughter and adventure. Her first long-overdue posting (see outspoken and opinionated…) is to the household of former naval captain Harry Kincaid whose flighty sister leaves her three children with him for an extended stay ⬇️

robinb before leaving for Egypt. Harry, as an organized and meticulous perfectionist, is ambitious and aiming for the title of Admiral while working all hours of the day in the process. Obviously, Georgie and Harry‘s styles clash. But as they begin to appreciate certain aspects of the other‘s ways, and as Harry‘s star begins rising and he is offered his own ship (the largest and newest in the fleet), he must decide if a naval career ⬇️ 15h
robinb taking him offshore for extended periods is really what he wants when a part of his heart (namely Georgie) is left onshore.
Very well written and Harry and Georgie are just such wonderful characters, both separately and as a couple. Throw in three mischievous, unruly children, and you‘ve got the recipe for hijinks and heartwarming.
Happy to see that this is the start of a new series as I will ⬇️

I loved this book…wonderful sense of place (Greenland and France), complex and lovely characters, and an interesting and engaging storyline. Centers around Ilse, a translator who lives in Greenland but is overjoyed by a trip to France to meet a famous poet, Po, and translate his poems. She falls for France and the charming aging Po as well. But will she also fall for his charismatic son or is the pull of her home, friends and family stronger? ⬇️

robinb Lots of lyrical writing that was a pleasure to read, and Ilse was such a joy to follow. I could easily feel and share in her love for both her homeland and her first experience of France.
Highly recommended. 5/5⭐️

This was an OK for me. Sweet Teen/YA about Natalie and Finn who meet and are paired as partners on a reality show filmed along the Appalachian Trail to win college scholarships. The 5th addition to the Lord Julian mystery series and another to love. This finds Julian asked by his lady love to help a friend find his wife (alive or dead) who has been missing for 5 years. Lots of frustrations for him as he deals with a cold trail, unhelpful siblings and a husband who is decidedly not a saint. My only quibbles here were that the denouement seemed a bit far fetched, and Julian‘s lady love could be a bit irritating at times. ⬇️

This first in series police procedural had its moments…a cheer worthy female protagonist with a haunting personal loss, her seasoned mentor, a possible mysterious love interest. But my problem here was in the execution of the story itself. There‘s a male protagonist who in the midst of a murder investigation becomes a suspect. He doesn‘t even meet the MFC until a ways into the story, but in the meantime we are hearing alternating chapters ⬇️

robinb from each main. And no, the MMC doesn‘t appear to be the love interest. This was just too much back and forth between the two. My concentration broke with each new chapter. I think the story would have been better served with a focus on just either the female OR male character. That being said, I plan to read the next one to see if things get a little less convoluted. 3/5⭐️ 3d

This 5th series entry finds Kim struggling to find a connection between victims seemingly being stabbed at random. Meanwhile her arch nemesis, sociopath Dr. Alex Thorne, a manipulative psychiatrist she put in prison, is still pulling strings…some involving Kim and her estranged mother. When Liv (a bartender) and Finn (a singer/songwriter) meet in a Cornish coastline bar, there‘s instant attraction. Following a tragedy, they are pulled apart by distance (he lives in LA, she won‘t leave her special needs brother), but Finn promises to come back each summer (there are 6 of them) if they are each unentangled. As Liv despairs of a full life together, they both reluctantly move forward with other people and are happy. However, the ⬇️

I felt that if they had a forever kind of love that they would have worked harder to make it work. This is the 6th and final installment of a ghost mystery series that surprised me by how much I enjoyed it. In this wrap-up, Elinor is accused of murder and on the run, confronts her father‘s killers, rescue her ghost talker apprentice and thwart a surprising villain. Lots going on. The two things I‘ve loved about this series are the characters and the world-building. I‘ll miss Elinor‘s adventures but glad I discovered her. 4.5/5⭐️

Bailedbailed

This was my first #readyourkindle book and unfortunately I had to bail 5% in. Not an auspicious start. 😆 I think the author was trying to create a sympathetic main character, but she only succeeded in annoying me. She lost her parents and went to live with an aunt and uncle she barely knew. She immediately despises her aunt (and yes, she‘s not a peach), starts making eyes at a footman and bribes her maid for gossip. I‘m just not interested.

As a continuation of the characters showcased in The Jane Austen Society and Bloomsbury Girls, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, just as I did its predecessors. Set in 1955, Vivien Lowry faces challenges as she begins her career as a playwright with a commercially successful opening in London only to be panned by reviewers. At the recommendation of a friend, she moves to Rome and takes a position as a script doctor on a major film shooting at 🔻

robinb Cinecitta Studios. While there she meets lots of interesting characters, both famous and infamous, and she takes the opportunity to close a chapter in her life by searching for clues as to what happened to her deceased fiancé during the war.
I enjoyed Vivien‘s complexity as a strong, independent woman of her time who has to deal with her vulnerability in her not-so-successful romantic entanglements. This is a story of growth, both personal ?

Emerson, a supermodel at 28, is ready to find the real thing in the romance department after yet another breakup with the wrong guy. She thought she had that once, as a teenager with Theo, her best friend in high school and now a successful commercial photographer. However, a shocking and terrible event sent her fleeing their relationship with no explanation at all to Theo. When she hears about a photo shoot that Theo is doing in Italy and 🔻

robinb mindful of a pact they made ten years before, Emerson finagles her way into the shoot to see if their relationship is still salvageable. As she and Theo slowly work through their past, Emerson begins to open up about why she left with no explanation. As they grow closer, they face new challenges around Emerson‘s celebrity status and Theo‘s insecurity about all that it entails. There is a trigger warning here, dealt with off the page, and I 🔻 2w
robinb was intrigued by how the author approached Emerson‘s character because of it. This is not a “recovery from a horrific event” book. Emerson is a strong and confident woman and has dealt with her trauma on her own terms…it does not define or control her life. I enjoyed the book, though at times I became a little frustrated with Emerson as she‘s very single-minded about winning Theo back. Theo was actually my favorite 🔻 2w

This debut is a hard one for me to rate. Centering around the seemingly perfect, wealthy Shanghai Lang family of 5 (parents Leo and Eko; daughters Yumi, Yoko and Kiko) and the high and low points in their lives (both personally and as a group). The story is told in a regressive timeline (2040-2014) and includes snippets from each family member‘s life. It‘s a story about marriage, about parenting, about siblings and about those people who come 🔻

robinb into their orbits during certain periods. The regressive nature of the story was a unique presentation and an angle to showcase each character‘s background/motivations, but going backwards through time in 5+ persons‘ lives at times was confusing/disorienting. I‘ll be honest. I had a difficult time relating to any member of this family, which in turn made it a hard story to get through. The family dynamics were depressing and hard 🔻 3w
robinb at times to have much sympathy for. I found them a bit arrogant, cold and mostly unfeeling as individuals and in their interpersonal relationships. And I‘m not overly fond of books that end abruptly with no real tie-up/denouement. The writing style was perfectly fine, but in the end this one just wasn‘t for me. 2.75/5⭐️ 3w

I was going to give this a soft pick, but just too much frustration with it. I‘ll first be up front about something…I‘m not much of a love triangle fan (especially as it‘s depicted here). This centers around Shea and John, long-time loves. When John proposes with a beautiful vintage ring, Shea says yes…BUT…she needs to research previous owners of said ring to make sure no bad karma is attached to it. Hmmm, OK. With John‘s bewildered blessing, 🔻

robinb she sets off to Italy (and several other destinations including Portugal) with her older sister, and an interested journalist, Graham. As the search becomes more convoluted so does Shea‘s thoughts about marriage in general (her parents‘ didn‘t end well), and she begins to develop (possible) feelings for Graham. As she garners answers, will she allow her Nonna‘s superstition to sway her own future happiness? OK, my problem here was 🔻 4w
robinb with Shea‘s character. She allows herself to be swept along on a nonsensical journey to find answers when she should have listened to her sister and examined her own thoughts and motives. Also, ever thought of selling the ring, buying a brand new one and saving your fiancé some heartache and anguish? Guess not. Unfortunately, rather than seeing Shea grow much through her adventures, I couldn‘t get past her immaturity, wishy-washiness and selfish? 4w
robinb behavior. To be honest I felt like giving up on this book at one point, but I will say the last 20% (though rushed) got better. I had no problem with the writing (perfectly written), but I need characters to invest in and care about and a story to inform and entertain, and I just didn‘t get those here. 2.75/5⭐️ 4w

Grace Burrowes is one of those writers that you recognize from her first paragraph in a book. She has a distinct style, unique humor and simply just a way with words. I‘ve been a fan for many years. This is the beginning of a new series called The Bad Heir Day Tales (gotta love that title!). It finds Finn Cathcart, a successful sculptor, being reluctantly led to the title of duke following the death of his cousin. As he tries to curb his 🔻

robinb animosity toward the family who treated his parents so shabbily, he is shown the “Duke” ropes by Wilhelmina, the widow of his late cousin. As the two are drawn together, they gain support and confidence from each other as they struggle against controlling family members. Both mains are wonderful here, Finn as a warm-hearted “fixer” and Willie as a woman coming into her own after having been dictated to and striven to keep the peace her entire 🔻 4w
robinb married life. Burrowes is also a master at introducing and developing her supporting cast, here most notably Emily, Willie‘s young daughter and Pritchard, Finn‘s man-of-all-trades. A wonderful start to a new series…one I‘m looking forward to keeping up with. 4.5/5⭐️ 4w

This is third in a sibling trilogy, and although they can be read alone, I recommend reading them in order.
Luke Edgewood has journeyed to the European island country of Skymar (fictional), where two of his sisters have met their matches, to work on a renovation project for an orphanage there. He meets Ellie St. Claire, the project manager, who unbeknownst to him, happens to be the youngest princess of the realm. As these two are almost 🔻

robinb immediately attracted to each other and their relationship develops, it seems that their chance at happiness is doomed. She cannot abdicate her duties, he has a business and family awaiting him in the US.

Very soft pick.
Amy has settled in a job that she really doesn't enjoy because her musical dream was dashed two years before by a disastrous attack of nerves. She receives a missent email and is able to track down the intended recipient, who happens to be on an expedition in Antarctica. What begins as a simple email exchange develops into a friendship which in turn leads them both to move forward with their individual dreams. But there's also 🔻

robinb some conflict added in as far as honesty and trust are concerned.
This story was just an average read for me. It was sweet, and I liked the message of "be brave", believe in yourself and step out of your comfort zone, but I also found it lacking in depth and not very different from other "email relationship" books that I've read. While I did learn some about Amy's background, I finished the story not really feeling like I knew much about ?

This is third in the Lady Helena Investigates series. Lots of family drama in this installment with Helena trying to help her nephew out of a scandalous situation as well as a potential death sentence for murder. Helena also is surprised by a visit from her first love‘s brother while she is wondering about her tenuous future relationship with Armand Fortier who has his own obstacles to overcome. I had a couple of issues with this book. First, 🔻

robinb the mystery felt like it was almost completely forgotten in the middle of the story to exclusively focus on introducing new characters and working out personal relationships (both romantic and familial). My other pet peeve, that has run throughout the series, is Helena‘s relationship with her siblings which feature prominently in the stories. While on one hand, she seems like a strong, take-charge heroine, she invariably lets her family run 🔻 (edited) 1mo
robinb roughshod over her, especially her overbearing older sisters. It‘s very
irritating and contradictory to the rest of her character, and while, yes, it does provide some conflicts to resolve and hurdles to overcome, it just seems too much. However, the ending left some cliffhanger moments that I‘m sure will provide some future drama to Helena‘s life, so I plan be along to see where that drama takes her. 4/5 ⭐️

Ok, I love this series. But the last couple of books have been rather ho-hum for me. This one felt very slow (pretty much throughout) and even the mystery did not hold my interest all that much. The whole book just felt a bit “off” to me. However, there was a teaser of a cliffhanger that is keeping me hoping for a return to better things. I do wonder if the death of one of this writing duo could be the cause of the “off feel” of the past couple🔻

I‘m loving this series! Set during WW2, this 4th outing finds Ellie called on to aid Major Ramsey with a series of robberies that may be connected to a bigger German threat. She‘s also decided to investigate shocking allegations that her father may have been a spy. There are also developments on the personal side between Ellie and Ramsey (good and bad) which led to some frustration for me with some choices Ellie made. Great characters, great 🔻

robinb stories! Bonus…seriously beautiful cover. Recommended for Lady Darby and Verity Kent mysteries fans. 4.5/5⭐️ #coverlove (edited) 1mo

Frenchman's Creek | Dame Daphne Du Maurier

Hey, Paula! I think that you sent me a book from another of your #LMPBC groups? No sweat, just wanted to let you know. 😊

If you‘d like me to forward it, drop me an email (robinb@litsy.com) with the recipient‘s name/address. 👍

bookandbedandtea Oh no!! @ElizaMarie Apparently I screwed up. If I emailed both of you the other's address, would you send each other the correct books? I'll be happy to venmo you both the postage. I can't believe I did that! I'm so sorry! 😳😖 1mo
robinb @bookandbedandtea it‘s no biggie, Paula…no Venmo necessary for me. And yes, happy to forward to @ElizaMarie on Monday. 1mo
ElizaMarie @bookandbedandtea No problem! (Also no Vemo needed - these things happen). I haven't gotten the book you meant to send to @RobinB though. When did you send it? (edited) 1mo

TheAromaofBooks Oh @bookandbedandtea I FINALLY got your books in the mail today!! I sent you back Celine from the last round, and The Only Survivors for this round. Sorry it took so long - part of it was me not getting to reading the book and then this week has just been absolute pandemonium in my family lol But you should get them soon!!!! @Jerdencon @robinb 1mo
bookandbedandtea @ElizaMarie I mailed both books last Monday. If it didn't get to you by today I'd assume it will arrive Monday. I'm away from home right now but I can track it when I get back home tomorrow night. I'll email both you and @robinb with each other's addresses. 1mo
bookandbedandtea @TheAromaofBooks I hope it's been good family pandemonium, or at least nothing too bad! You're timing for sending those is actually pretty good! I'll probably be just about ready to read TOS when it arrives. 😊 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @bookandbedandtea - Why do phones want to autocorrect words into other words?! If mine changes we're to were one more time, I'm going to lose it! 😂 1mo
bookandbedandtea @robinb I just tried sending an email to you and Eliza but I got a failure message for you. Can you email me at ps.harp@comcast.net? 1mo
robinb @bookandbedandtea hi Paula! Just sent an email. Let me know if you don‘t receive it. 😊 1mo
robinb Hi Paula! @bookandbedandtea Just got my #LMPBC today. I‘ll get started on it as soon as I can…got a busy week unfortunately. 😩 Thanks for sending @ElizaMarie ! 🤗 Did you receive yours, Eliza? According to tracking number it should reach you today. 🤞🏼🤞🏼 (edited) 1mo
ElizaMarie @robinb @BookAndBedAndTea I never got it the #LMBC book. I had been meaning to send this message earlier this week. Didn't see the comment until I went to go dig for it. But yeah, I haven't received the book yet. And... well there will be no way I would even begin to finish it -- 4w
robinb @ElizaMarie so sorry it‘s so late, Eliza…you never know these days. It appears to still be slowly moving. I‘ll be keeping an eye on it from my end. @bookandbedandtea 4w
ElizaMarie @robinb Does is show as being delivered already? I checked the neighbor and they said they didn't get anything. 4w
robinb @ElizaMarie No. It shows that it‘s still in transit but delayed. I think I sent you the tracking number in our last email? If not, let me know, and I‘ll do that. 4w
ElizaMarie @robinb You might have sent it, but I could have accidently deleted the email. I tend to delete emails when I think I have completed what I had to do with it. So, it might have been something like that. 4w

ElizaMarie @bookandbedandtea Oh, don't worry about it. Accidents happen. Life is super crazy all over all the time! So. No biggie. I think I am going to send this to the next person. I know I won't be able to get halfway through this one (and I have a couple of others started). But... I hear it's a good book, so I will put it in my TBR and get to it soon-ish! 3w

This was my #BookSpin for the month. I picked it up because I enjoyed her Sunshine Vicram series recently. This was a supernatural woman-discovers-she‘s-a-witch story with some villains and romance thrown in. I might come back to this series as I love Jones‘ snarky humor (in this one especially the sidekick best friend), but for now I‘ve got too many others calling my name. 😆

This third installment in a time travel series (from modern day to 1890s) finds our heroine (a modern-day homicide detective in the body of a Victorian Scotland housemaid), settling into her new position as assistant to an undertaker/medical examiner. After attending the unwrapping of an ancient mummy, in which something goes horribly wrong, they become involved in unraveling the hows/whys. There‘s also a surprise twist towards the end that 🔻

robinb tests Mallory‘s resolve about how she‘s envisioned her future.
I love seeing the evolution of Mallory as she navigates her new life and how those around her perceive/accept her. Also there‘s an abundance of humor which is always a plus.
Really enjoying Armstrong‘s books. 4.5/5⭐️

This 7th book finds the newlyweds (Mikaela and Brodie) trying to settle in and find ways to blend their lives. They each have their own cases…a missing surgeon for her, an assassin/anarchist for him, but discover their cases might be connected. There‘s a code to break, ancient surgical procedures resurrected and dastardly deeds to thwart. Exciting times. I enjoyed this one as we see the new dynamics between our mains and we begin to anticipate 🔻

robinb how they‘ll handle this new reality. Really enjoying this series. 4.25/5⭐️ 1mo
CoverToCoverGirl Is this series comparable to Anna Lee Huber‘s Lady Darby series? 1mo
robinb @CoverToCoverGirl Yes, but I wouldn‘t say quite as good. I really love the characters in this series…quirky and interesting. And the mains are wonderful. Mikaela is headstrong and independent, and Brodie is constantly challenged by Mikaela‘s headstrongness (?) and independence 😂😂😂. I just fell for them both. I‘d love to hear if you give it a try! Here‘s the first in series. 1mo
CoverToCoverGirl Thanks so much! I believe I will give the first one a try. The Darby series is a big favourite of mine. I‘ve been searching for something as good or similar for a long time. Do you have any other recommendations along that line? 1mo

Number 13 in series this one finds Mercy and gang going up against an ancient and powerful artifact known as the Soul Taker who is taking prisoners and leaving victims in its wake. There‘s also still an issue with Adam‘s personal demons, Wulfe and the entire local vampire seethe has gone missing and a mysterious pack member‘s identity is discovered. As usual lots going on. My only disappointment is that we haven‘t seen more of Stefan in either 🔻

robinb of the last two books. He is such a complex and interesting character (not to mention always bringing the humor), and his very brief appearance here does not even feel like the character I‘ve come to expect. The past two books have centered around Mercy and Adam‘s relationship which is fine, but I‘m definitely missing more of the beloved side characters that I‘ve come to appreciate over the course of the series. 🔻 1mo
robinb But this book was still an exciting addition, and I was glad to get more background on some of the vampires in the series. 4.25/5⭐️ 1mo

I was two behind in this series and am ALWAYS excited to dive back into Mercy‘s adventures. This 12th book in the series involves a “smoke dragon”, who with a single bite, can control a person and have them do anything it likes. There‘s also a bond issue between Mercy and Adam (her mate) and a rogue group is trying to take over their pack. There‘s always multiple problems going on in the Mercyverse, so it always keeps me entertained and on the 🔻

Third in the Fiona Mahoney mystery series, I was a little disappointed in this one as it compares to the previous two. It‘s 100+ pages shorter, and the story felt its brevity. While the characters were as great as they‘ve ever been, the plot line was a bit odd to me with parts that were confusing like I had missed something. This felt more like a novella filler. But I plan to continue on and hope for a return to more excitement. 3.75/5⭐️

I‘m a big Clayborn fan from her beginning. But while I did enjoy this book, it was not a favorite for me. And to be honest I‘m not sure why. This revolves around two sisters who were abandoned by their flighty mom (who took up with a grifter). The older sister Jess raised Tegan, her half sister. Now Tegan wants to find their mother and enlists the aid of a podcaster who interviewed the man 10 years before. Thus begins a cross-country adventure 🔻

robinb with the sisters, Salem (the podcaster) and Adam (her assistant). Adam also has a personal story that he‘d like to produce (with Salem‘s approval) about his best friend‘s mental struggles and subsequent suicide. While this was a good story about what family means, what courage means and what strength means, I just didn‘t connect with these characters as well as I wanted to. But still, a good book. 4/5⭐️ 2mo

This second outing in this Tabitha Knight/Julia Child mystery series set in post WW2 Paris was even better than the debut. It centers around valuable bottles of wine showing up as gifts but containing something other than just grapes. Great historical research including trips into the Catacombs and fun cooking lessons from Child. 🔻

This is a short story/novella following the 4th in the Raven and Fisher mysteries. Raven and Fisher race to solve the mysterious death of one of their mentor‘s patients before his detractors can find a way to destroy his career with it.

I enjoyed this mystery series starter. Set in Victorian London, Gemma Tate, who lives with her journalist brother (her only living relative) is a nurse working for the son of an invalid woman that she takes care of. When her brother is killed in a horrific accident she begins to wonder if it was a more sinister act when she reads a cryptic message from his notebook. Meanwhile Police Inspector Sebastian Bell is busy trying to save his job by 🔻

robinb solving the vicious rape and murder of a young heiress who was left “crucified” on a cemetery tombstone with a mysterious heart hung around her neck. When Gemma shares her clue, the two warily work toward the same end as they come to believe the two deaths are connected. This story is disturbing, and its villain(s) are very dark, so reader beware. I liked the dynamic between Tate and Bell and thought they worked well together, 🔻 2mo
