The Chase: A Novel | Janet Evanovich, Lee Goldberg

Fun book my sister gave me to read. Reminds me of the show "The Chase" with a very similar concept that I was really enjoying- sad that got cancelled.

blurb
Dimack17

Fun story my younger sister is reading this and I could hear her yelp about certain developments even when I was in the shower. She was spite reading it because her Reading teacher doesn't like fantasy. She doesn't like to read usually but I guess I picked her a book with enough violence and intrigue to actually keep her interest. ⚔️

I love box sets. Got these for Christmas and I'm excited to finally have time to read them. I think I read Sabriel 5 years ago and hadn't known anything came after it. I don't remember anything about it, but I've got a good feeling these are going to hit my sweet spot. 🙂

Julius Caesar | William Shakespeare

I was discussing Shakespeare with my younger sister. Her favorite is Julius Caesar. She likes how Brutus's soliloquy combines so many metaphors and the overall beautiful writing. I like a Midsummer Night's Dream because it's feels like one of the most easily accessible plays. Also, it's funny.

Got this for Christmas and loved it. Which is not unexpected as retold fairytales are my favorite. I loved the entire Rampion crew and each couple a dynamic was entirely different yet each one worked really well. (Cinder and Kai though 💜💜💜)

No fancy review. Just 2 thumbs up 👍. This is the type of good YA book I've been looking for.

Reading this book on statistics to refresh myself on how they work. One of the hardest lessons growing up is learning that real life math/science isn't as full proof as you think. Nothing quite works the way theories say they will and because we as humans are biased anything we make even using math/science will have a bias in it. We just don't like to admit it!

I'm excited to start reading this. I've heard such good things. I love fantasy but have never read books that are quite so dense... literally. I weighed the copy of this (1.5 lbs) and the sequel (3lbs) that I bought. These are books for lying in bed with, not ones to stick in my purse.

I love fairy tale retellings. This is one of the first ones I read and I don't know if that's what influenced me but it's also my favorite type where the short story is more expanded on and less flipped on it's head ala Wicked. Being a bookworm myself is was very easy to connect with Belle.

I don't read much nonfiction but when I do it's about things I already love and want to learn more about. For anyone interested in the NHL I would really suggest The Final Call. I was just getting into hockey and getting glimpses of history from someone who was around through it all was a real treat. A super engaging read. #nonfiction #somethingforsept #GoFlyers

Gotta love the classics. I don't think I could chose two any more different. Narnia is a childhood favorite of mine. I read Dorian Gray because of the show Penny Dreadful and I'm glad I did. The hype of Oscar Wilde's style did not let me down, and the story was so gripping once I got past the first couple of chapter. #faveclassics #somethingforsept

No picture today because I had borrow the book from my college professor. One of the best Sci fi dystopian novels I've ever read. A futuristic setting that doesn't take more than a squint to see as a possibility and a gripping tale. So I've been rereading this series (which I adore) and realized this is one of the few sci/fantasy series by a man which I've loved. All of my favorite sci fi/fantasy series seem to be written by women (it does not escape my notice the the main character is still female in this series)...So maybe a weird question but anyone have good recommendations for not grim dark or overly long series for sci fi/fantasy written by a man?

I remember buying this from a book fair in middle school. Do they even still have those? It's one of the books that started my love of fairy tale retelling. I'll still reread it if I need something short and sweet. In this case I read it during the Olympics when there was too much reporting and not enough sports lol.

Dorothy Must Die | Danielle Paige

I usually don't do well with "edgy" retellings where the bad guys are good and good guys are bad, most of the time it feels like a cheap emotional tactic. However my sister bought it to read so I decided to give ita a whirl. This does not feel like an exception. But I'm only 100 pages in so for now I'll keep reading since I hate not finishing things and the book isn't horrible.

After reading a lot of meh YA fantasy books about the "one true savior plus friends" lately I picked this up expecting more of the same. I couldn't even tell you if it was better written than what I've been reading but the premise is everything I ever wanted. A ragtag group of 6 all with their own unique skill set coming together for a heist of epic proportions set my heart aflutter. 10/10 would recommend to everybody. Can't wait for the sequel.

Throne of Glass | Sarah J. Maas
Mehso-so

I believe this was Maas's first book, and it shows in some of the cliche writing. For instance if Caelena isn't somehow lost magical royalty I'll eat my hat- which sort of contradicts my next point. As someone who grew up on Tamora Pierce I was disappointed in how Calaena was the best assassin in the history of ever with minimal effort. I really loved the portrayal of her rage however. Overall I see the potential but would give it a 2.75/5.

The.lonely.bookworm Don't give up on this series. The character building is incredible and the series gets better with every book. One of my favorite series 8y
Dimack17 I actually bought the first three and I do think there's a lot potential, especially in the characters, so I am going to keep reading. Your comment is incentive to do it sooner rather than later! 8y

These covers are as beautiful as the books inside. 1 sentence summary: Blackthorn and Grim are Sherlock and Watson for fairy tales mysteries. However the best part is the characters. I can't even describe how much I love Blackthorn and Grim as individuals and how much their friendship means to me.These two are so damaged and yet so strong. I'm excited to read these again. I preordered the 3rd book and look forward to the conclusion of this trilogy

After finishing the entire trilogy my opinion has gone up. Quentin finally shows the character development he mostly only talked about in the first two books. The Magicians: A Novel | Lev Grossman
Mehso-so

I will be reading the rest of the series but I would never recommend this to anyone. Quentin is one of the most unlikeable main characters and doesn't even influence the plot of the story enough to justify it. Most of the secondary characters were not much better.

WordWaller I respectfully disagree. I thought it was a wonderful case of going against the norm of extremely likable characters. I love me some reality at this point in my life, so it was refreshing to find someone with faults like me. Glad to hear others' opinions though, and doesn't mean yours is less valid. 8y
Otherworld_Library The problem with this was that while I often love unlikable characters, I have to care what happens to them. In this I could not have cared less. 8y
Dimack17 I did like the book overall. I think the main reason I found Quentin so unlikeable was because at the end of each "arc" he would say all the right things but then his behavior wouldn't change at all. It grows tedious after a while when there are quite a few arcs in the book. 8y

MinDea I just started this book and having trouble getting into it. I so far really do not like Quentin. Appreciate your review! Trying to decide whether to keep reading or bail on it...but so many people love this book...?!? Has to get better, right? 8y
Dimack17 Hi @MinDea I'd say either bail now or be prepared to read all three. The best character growth Quentin has is in book 3 which I actually ended up really liking. These books really don't work well as individual novels so you won't get a satisfying conclusion until the third book in my opinion. Happy reading! 8y
wanderlustywriter Just finished the first book and agree with your review. I'm not sure I can make myself struggle through the rest of the series, though I am mildly curious as to what happens next. Maybe someday? Maybe I just watch the show? We shall see... 8y
