This was such a favorite of mine growing up and I got the wild urge to return to it recently. Part I follows the barefoot and orphaned countess Meliara as she and her brother start a grassroots revolution against greedy King Galdran, and Part II finds Mel at court, now navigating a very different kind of battlefield. Through it all is the infuriatingly perfect Marquis of Shevraeth. Such a satisfying, super fun, and beautifully built fantasy!
Oooh! I'd forgotten that I bought this 😍
No idea if it'll hold up to my memories but...
This is one of my all time favorite books, one I can read again and again! Mel and her brother Bran revolt against their king, only to find a revolt already in progress. Then Mel finds herself in a new court that she helped create but doesn't understand, and struggling to understand her relationship with Vidanric, the new king. The e-book has a special extra that retells some keys scenes from Vidanric's point of veiw.
One small perk of turning into a snot monster is that I was at home to accept delivery of these beauties today!
The epitome of a #feelgoodbook for me, since I've had this paperback since young-adulthood and reread it many times. It was the only book I brought with me when I studied abroad in college.

I love this book. Mel remains one of the most frustrating heroines I've ever read, but that's only because she makes all the same rash/naive decisions I know I would make in the same situation. A little bit of everything - action, romance, politics, and more- makes for a very fun read.
