The #mockturtle is described as very melancholic, so have eeyore for #CharacterslikeAlice @LibrarianRyan

LibrarianRyan Yeahhh. You and me both. 👍🏻🤓😁 6y
Velvetfur Aaawww Eeyore is one of my fave characters, loooove him! I have a few Eeyore cuddly toys somewhere at my parents' place, I must remember to get them next time I'm there, thanks for the reminder! 6y
julesG Good choice! 6y
julesG @Velvetfur My kids had the whole hundred acre crew as cuddly toys. I wonder where they migrated to, probably in the big box in the cellar. 6y

Valentine's Day wouldn't be the same without some dark, brooding Brontë-esque musings on love 😉💞 #loveisreal #themostreal #themostlasting #loveisbitter #itisstrong #strongasdeath

merelybookish The old maids are killing it in this book! ?? And, if they don't already exist, there need to be Bronte-themed valentines! "May the sting of my love torture you forever!" ? 6y
Tanisha_A Bahahah! Soo good 6y

Question 3: Please explain the scene with India‘s mom?!? Is there a deeper meaning than just odd behavior?? Big Barbara refers to her as “the Devil” and why did the mom poke holes in all the food???? #HELLoWeen #80sParty

Cinfhen I just didn‘t get the inclusion of this incident. I really thought it would become clear later on in the book the role of India‘s mom and her reason for poking holes in all of their food. I‘m still scratching my head over it 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y
Librarybelle I thought that was bizarre as well. Revenge? Animosity? It just seemed weird. I wondered why this was added... 6y
Robothugs I‘m assuming because she was dating a psychiatrist maybe she had a mental illness? I‘m not really sure. I kind of wished their was a bit of elaboration, too. 6y
See All 33 Comments
quietjenn I really wanted more backstory on her! Like why did the family hate her so much? I think this scene was just a "ha, see? She's crazy!" thing, which I find very wanting. 6y
Cinfhen Ugh!!!! It‘s still pissing me off!!!! @quietjenn @Robothugs @Librarybelle I don‘t like storylines that lead to nowhere. Is this a common trope in horror? @TrishB 6y
Robothugs Not necessarily. Depends on the author. @Cinfhen (edited) 6y
AmyG @Cinfhen Yes! A storyline that went nowhere. So what‘s the point? I just assumed the mom had some sort of mental illness. (edited) 6y
TrishB Not common no! I just thought she was doing ‘ex‘ revenge things. I also thought the family were doing ‘blame ex‘ things too. But other than giving some background to why she was just with her dad, there was an annoying non story line! 6y
Cinfhen I guess I was hoping for loose ends or storylines to all come together in the end @AmyG @TrishB @Robothugs 6y
Reggie I thought the exwife was an explanation of the Luker we now got. As far as poking holes in the food, I was just thinking it‘s one of those horrible things exes do to let you know they‘re capable of still coming into your life just to mess things up. 6y
Cinfhen Hahaha @Reggie That‘s my favorite explanation ❣️❣️❣️🙌🏻 #wordsOfWisdom 6y
Reggie @Cinfhen one time this woman knocked at my door explaining that she was looking for the guy who rode the motorcycle that lived downstairs. She said she was his wife, it was his birthday, and she had made him enchiladas.(warning bells going off) could I please give them to him. Sure. Later that night I caught up with him and told him about the enchiladas. Straight faced he said, “I don‘t know who you‘re talking about, I‘ve never been married.” (edited) 6y
Reggie And as good as those enchiladas looked I threw them away. He didn‘t want them and yes it was his birthday, you just never know. 6y
Bookzombie I agree with @TrishB about the ‘ex‘ revenge things and the family doing the ‘blame ex‘ things. I have seen families love the first wife/husband and then just tear her/him down after divorce. I also wonder if this wasn‘t to show us more about India. Her mother abandoned her, then returns only to play a nasty joke. How does that affect her growing up? 6y
Bookzombie @Reggie Wow! That is so strange! 6y
Cinfhen I‘m dying here!!! I eat up your stories @reggie 😂😂❤️glad u threw out those enchiladas 6y
Cinfhen I was sure all that poking holes in the food had to do with protecting India from the sand Elementals @TrishB @Reggie @Bookzombie @AmyG or maybe she was inviting them in???? 😜 6y
BookwormAHN I think she was just nuts 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y
Kalalalatja It made no sense! If you are going to tickle my interest with an ex doing weird stuff, you better give me an explanation! 6y
Sweettartlaura The ex-wife had been there - India was conceived there, yes? Maybe she was driven mad by something she saw or experienced. Maybe she thought India was tainted because of it. Maybe she was angry because Luker exposed her to this. Not wholly satisfactory, agreed, but again, it added to the bond b/t India & Luker, and what made them different from other families. 6y
DebinHawaii It did seem like a loose end--a bit annoying & I did think it would lead to something more--like she took something when she was there, or she would somehow pop up at the end with everyone else. Since nothing more transpired, i lean to the ex doing petty, strange things theory too. But man, going after & ruining food--that might have been one of the most terrifying parts of the book 😱 for a foodie! 🤣🤣🤣 6y
Cinfhen Hahahaha @DebinHawaii and that‘s why @Sweettartlaura with the ex being at Beldame and having hated it there, I thought for sure she was exposed or knew something and it would tie back in later on in the story....I‘m just used to literary fiction when the author does manage to weave in story lines... 6y
bookandbedandtea That episode was SUCH a weird thing to throw into the mix and is part of why I wanted to skip the Beldane/horror story and instead get the stories behind who all these people were! I found them all really interesting characters and would have liked more. 6y
peaKnit I felt like it was one of many weird tangents that really brought nothing to the story. I was left puzzled about a lot of pieces. Still enjoyed reading with the group all the same😊 6y
LeahBergen @Reggie That‘s bloody creepy! 6y
Bklover Yeah it was strange. I thought maybe she was trying to be obnoxious and ruin the food. Although that probably wouldn‘t have ruined it for me. Didn‘t seem necessarily to the story at all 6y
Reviewsbylola Idk if there‘s an explanation but it did confirm for me that Luker wasn‘t as out of hand as I was afraid as far as his treatment of his ex. I cringed at some of the things they said about her in front of India. 6y
CarolynM Totally agree, no idea what the real story was with India's mother. Like you @DebinHawaii I was expecting it to be picked up later in the story. Love your suggestion @Sweettartlaura 6y
Mdargusch I kept waiting for the ex to come back into the story. She was a very unsettling part of the story. 6y
Cinfhen I still like @Reggie explanation best “ I thought the exwife was an explanation of the Luker we now got. As far as poking holes in the food, I was just thinking it‘s one of those horrible things exes do to let you know they‘re capable of still coming into your life just to mess things up.” @Mdargusch @CarolynM @Reviewsbylola @Bklover @peaknit @bookandbedandtea #WordsOfWisdom 🙌🏻❤️ 6y
JaclynW 😆 I liked @reggie explanation too. (And that enchilada story! 😯 Creepy!) Although @Sweettartlaura has me thinking now about her theory... I also wanted to learn more about each of the characters @bookandbedandtea . They were an interesting bunch. 6y
Cinfhen They were definitely an interesting bunch @JaclynW and I just now realized that we know very little about the sister who became a nun 6y
JaclynW @Cinfhen VERY LITTLE! I want a sequel!! 6y

The narrative voice of this book has taken some getting used to for me because I feel it's a bit unnatural at times, but there are several quotes of wisdom I've found in this book that I've loved as well. One being not feeling the need to protect people, even those you love, while telling YOUR story. #literaryquotes #wordsofwisdom #literature #lifelessons

I read this and just kept on going, then several chapters later I really sunk in for me and I stopped to go back and find it. This is so true, and one of those things you don‘t really fully understand or appreciate until you‘ve lost someone you love.
