marleed @Cinfhen Michelle Phifer was more likable in the film than Beth in the book. I was thinking this would have been a good response to a question earlier this week about unlivable protagonists! ... Rain reprieve so I better get some miles for the CFN. On his first night at Green Knowe, Tolly is rowed through the flooded gardens by lamplight after having travelled through a flooded England, drenched by rain. I love that this English landscape hinges between reality and fantasy; there's no solid division between the real and imagination, which is to me is a crucial element of the best children's books 💚

saresmoore Mmm, great point about children‘s lit! If the book was good enough, just reading it would blur my sense of reality in everyday life for a while. I miss that. 5y
