First read this 30 years ago at school. A classic, and a stark reminder that the war wasn‘t just fought in Europe.

This has been a popular novel, but I thought it was just okay. It wasn't bad, I was just hoping for a little bit more.

Amazing story of WW2 in China, seen through the eyes of a boy called Jim. Interesting in that theres often a war in Jims mind about whos side hes on, who he should trust, where he should go, is the war actually over? He sees so much and understands so little, like any child would in wartime, and yet his desire to survive is seemingly neverending.

J. G. Ballard went #missing from his parents during the invasion of China by Japan during World War II. His odyssey of survival is truly incredible.

Also I always felt like there was a finger #missing on the cover. Like a cartoon character was holding the plane or something.

And check out baby Christian Bale playing Jim Ballard on the cover of the movie! #MayBookFlowers

BookInMyHands And so began my Christian Bale crush as a young girl... 7y
Kimberlone The movie is great. Christian Bale and John Malkovich! I've been intending to read the book forever... 7y
