A small number of people and institutions control most of the world‘s wealth. Yes, the world. Phillips reveals how they are interconnected and details the systems they use to protect and grow their fortunes. While the book can be dry at times, especially when listing wealth managers, their biographies, or major corporations, it remains highly insightful in showing how wealth enables individuals and corporations to achieve their aims.

The plot was fun but the writing was a bit of a struggle sometimes.

For a novel filled with exasperating characters, this was quite a fun read! While the characters are exasperating, they're also complex and darkly funny, with commentary about wealth---inherited and otherwise---race, antisemitism, and the challenges of being in a family. I love that there's no character in this novel that I can entirely love or entirely despise.

I appreciated the writing style—it reminded me of Frederik Backman, with each chapter offering a third-person look into a different character‘s inner world. But the story and characters fell flat. They were unlikable, and not just because they came from old-money New York. The author‘s attempt to humanize them through philanthropy felt forced and unrealistic. Book #59 in 2025

Not gonna lie, after reading very mixed reviews and seeing the length of both the entire book and each chapter, I almost bailed before I started.
But .. I'd adored Fleischman and dove in.
So worth it! No way I'd have seen all the plot, and such a brilliant tone of narration, slightly judging but also explaining.
Very impressive.

Another over the top, wealthy wedding drama with happy ending.
