⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️
Don‘t read this book. I just read it in an afternoon. It‘s the most horribly wonderful awful book I have read in a long time. It has all the triggers. Well, maybe it‘s missing one or two, but it‘s just easier to say it has all of them. It has A LOT. And I loved it. It‘s seriously dark and depraved and deviant. But I have a thing for splatterpunk. I do not in anyway recommend this book. But it‘s really good.

Fin is back in her hometown for the summer, nearly choking with anger over the disappearance and presumed death of her best friend, Betty. Especially since the town seems to have moved on. I felt like there was potential here, but there are too many things wrong with it to live up to that.

sarahbarnes Your review seems consistent with the book‘s title. 😁 2y

Argh! #unpopularopinion time... I finished it for a book club otherwise would have dnf‘d. I didn‘t care about any of the characters. The dude is married with a kid and disappears...to go be with a girl from his past? The premise didn‘t work for me. The all knowing narrator didn‘t work for me either. The story itself was, well, boring. Lots of eye rolling. I am reading another book with a blind MC which is a million times better.

BarbaraBB Hmm. I had it stacked but do have my doubts now. #unstacked 5y
Tracyantoon @BarbaraBB it has high ratings here and on goodreads but the “epic love story” was way too cheesy for me and just not well written in my humble opinion. I felt like I was being told the story and not shown the story. Lots of gripes about it. Book club should be interesting. 😀 Btw, your pics of Oman are gorgeous! ☀️🐫🌵🌴 5y
BarbaraBB Thanks! Three more days to go! I am glad you mentioned ‘cheesy‘. Now I know I did right by unstacking 😀😘 5y
TerriGreen Bummer you didn‘t enjoy this one. That is a dilemma, you want to dnf but it‘s for book club! 5y

Oh man. I think I just picked the wrong book for this prompt for #booked2019. It was so slow! I also felt like it came across as a bit pedantic and needed to be cut down a lot. This was my first experience with “cli-fi”, but I‘m not giving up because there were elements that I found interesting, such as the unique idea of a the city under water and the description, but overall, this was a rough book to get through. #cli-fi

Cinfhen Ha!!! And I‘ve just #UnStacked!!! 6y
keithmalek @Cinfhen It's possible to unstack? How? 6y
keithmalek @Victoriahoperose I didn't like it either. 6y

Victoriahoperose @Cinfhen it could just be me! Maybe it‘s just not my thing. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
Victoriahoperose @keithmalek I‘m glad I‘m not alone! It was just super slow in my opinion 6y
keithmalek @Victoriahoperose Coolest book cover ever though. 6y
Cinfhen @Leftcoastzen recently reviewed this book and she also mentioned how slow & dense this book was...although she liked it enough in the end to give it a pick!! @keithmalek go back to the stack add icon and touch the to read button if you‘ve already stacked it will unstack after you hit done 6y

What a disappointment. On Goodreads a lot of users marked it as a thriller but I feel like that‘s not true. If anything, the book should be categorized under boring.

It was about a women‘s obsession over her neighbor.

KatieDid927 I received an ARC of this from Goodreads and I could not agree more. Just blech. 6y
LMJenkins Ditto! 👎🏼 6y
Bookladylinda 🤔 maybe I won‘t be sad if I can‘t get my hands on a library copy. 6y
AmyG I agree. It was not what everyone raved about. 6y

This book was BLEAK. All the trigger warnings I can think of, it is the semi-autobiographical story of a young gay boy coming of age in an extremely LGBTQ-unfriendly, poor village in northern France. This is my book for the author who is new to you category for #booked2019 and #LetterL for #LitsyAtoZ (in translation)

Cinfhen Like “A Little Life”bleak????? I don‘t think I can handle that!!! 6y
bookwrm526 @Cinfhen I haven‘t actually been able to bring myself to read A Little Life. This one has little glimpses of hope, but there‘s a lot of abuse 6y
Cinfhen That‘s a definite #HardPass 😢 I don‘t want to read about any kind of physical abuse ~ thanks for the warning. I‘ve now #unstacked 6y

I didn‘t love this one. 😬 600 pages is a lot to invest and I found this one over written and clunky.

Celia is feuding with her husband Richard in 1968 when she goes into a catatonic state and revisits their original love affair in 1550s Tudor England. Most of the book was spent in the 1500s and the “modern day” scenario and time travel almost seemed like an after thought.

Cinfhen I‘ve just #UnStacked 😂😂 6y
Cathythoughts 600 pages 😱. Well done 👍🏻 6y

jillrhudy On p. 384 and seriously thinking of bailing. I don‘t return to “the present” (1968) until p. 557. @LeahBergen @Reviewsbylola 6y
Reviewsbylola I liked that the ending provided clarity but I think it could have been more cohesive and fast paced. @jillrhudy 6y

Not sure what the heck I just read. Several meandering storylines that don‘t seem to have anything to do with one another and one very bleak, lifeless MC. I suppose the writing was pretty at times but that doesn‘t mean I want to read 200+ pages describing the lake and surrounding woods 😑 I finished this only because I was somewhat interested in seeing the train-wreck of a family reach their final demise.

BooksAndChopsticks Great review. I've heard similar. 🧐 7y
Tamra Oh shoot! Such a great cover though. 7y
AmyG I finished thinking that the emding might tie things together. But that never happened. I found this book to just be odd. 7y

Redwritinghood I didn‘t like this one much either. The story just wasn‘t coherent. 7y
kelseynicburke I wasn‘t a fan either. When I finished the book, I just felt like there must be some big thing I was missing 7y
emilyhaldi @kelseynicburke exactly!! I wondered if perhaps the deeper meaning just went right over my head 🤔 7y

Arrgghhh! A scene of animal cruelty...I just can't!! And it's audio, so it's hard to know how far to skip ahead. 😢

Bklover Ewww.. thanks for the warning. I can read pretty much anything except that!! Will definitely have to skip that part. (edited) 7y
Ms_T Urgh! One scene is enough to put me off the whole book ☹️ #unstacked 7y
DGRachel I had to bail on The Blinds because of animal cruelty. I can handle just about anything an author throws at an adult, but not animal cruelty. 😔 7y

CatLass007 Oh, no! And I just got the audiobook. 7y
AlaMich @CatLass007 It's in Chapter 92 (according to Audible) 7y
CatLass007 @AlaMich Thank you! 7y
CatLass007 @AlaMich I didn‘t get my copy from Audible, I got it from Scribd. It only has 40 chapters. I guess I‘ll just have to endure it.😟 7y
AlaMich @CatLass007 There are 16:28 remaining at the point where it starts. Hope this helps!! 7y

What is this "imperative of youth", this critically important thing that Mae MUST do, because she's 24 and it's now or never? Have sex in a work bathroom stall ?? And as soon as it was over the guy had one word: "bye".

MicheleinPhilly Oh good grief. #unstacked 8y
LauraBeth @MicheleinPhilly on a positive note - the movie does look good 😂 but I'm beginning to think Dave Eggers hates women 🤔 8y
QuintusMarcus So much about this book was good, but this...Ugh. 8y

TheKidUpstairs I've tried a couple Eggers books, and I always bail early. There's usually something that makes me nope right outta there. 8y
needleminding When you have a line that sounds good but amounts to BS. 😂 8y
kimdegener I'm reading this right now, and I keep thinking about quitting. I'm halfway through though, and I think I'll push through and see how it ends. Just the idea of a society with no privacy whatsoever gives me the creeps, though. And I'm not sure what I think of Mae. I find her annoying. Very easily manipulated. 8y
LauraBeth @kimdegener I know exactly what you mean - I'm like, "can I bail on a book when I'm past page 300?" ? 8y
BookFreakOut The more quotes I see, the farther this falls down my TBR. 😒 8y
LauraBeth @TheKidUpstairs and @ReadingEnvy I remember when Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius came out and when I read what the book was about, I knew it was up my alley. I made it to page 20 and that may have been the first book that I ever bailed on in my life. I've let years lapse, thinking that it wasn't the right book at the right time for me and have tried to go back to it and every time - nope. 8y
LauraBeth @BookFreakOut this may be the case where the movie is better than the book 8y
LauraBeth @jaimeisbionic exactly 😂 8y
LauraBeth @QuintusMarcus This part was just terrible 8y
meggofrank 😐 8y
minkyb I guess I missed my window of youth imperative! 8y
LauraBeth @minkyb ??I was unaware that I was supposed to put "have sex in work bathroom stall with someone you barely know" on my youth bucket list 8y
AmandaL Eye roll 🙄 8y
ValerieAndBooks Ew. Seems more like a male fantasy thing than a goal that women would have 🙄! 8y
