Before I went shopping (and lemme tell you, Superstore‘s already jacked a bunch of their prices up, like JERKS. Safeway and Giant Tiger hadn‘t), Casey and I tackled the first few chapters of TAIWAN TRAVELOGUE. It‘s WORKING for me, friends. So many layers. I‘m sad I can‘t just read all day. #MFMarch

Feb #bookspin status since I'm not going to finish anything else this month. 4 read and 3 others with progress but not finished. Technically I did start House of Leaves but only got a few pages in before I had to set it aside for a library hold so I'm not counting it yet. I'll get to it... Eventually. Lol

I‘ve been reading Taiwan Travelogue this week! It imagines two women‘s lives during the Japanese rule of Taiwan and is is framed as a Japanese writer‘s rediscovered work in translation. I was interested to see this piece from the Asymptote Blog on Taiwanese literature in translation-

BarbaraBB It sounds very interesting 1mo

Such a lovely tribute to a mother and grandmother. Strength and perseverance at its best.

Very cute, but probably could‘ve been shorter. An enjoyable read, and I‘d be open to reading the other books in the series!

Ostensibly the auto fiction of a Japanese author based on a year long visit to Japanese-controlled Taiwan in 1938, this book explores colonialism, caste, racism, and love in a light, buoyant fashion drenched in food. While I do not feel it is better than The Book Censor‘s Library, it is nonetheless a worthy winner of the NBA for translated literature. I loved it.

Saw this recommendation on Instagram from Oprah‘s bookclub for the audiobook. I love reading about this culture and I‘m not sorry I purchased the audiobook and pick-up the book from my local library. Sent a message to the author and she thanked me and hope I enjoy it. Which I can say the first chapter has already captured me!❤️❤️❤️

I was planning to finish the entire book, but after I put it down, I couldn't get back into it. From the very start, Ever annoyed me so much. It was actually infuriating. Maybe it was the way she treated her parents? But either way, the way it's the main character meeting their love interest and making a funny or stupid impression when they first meet - it's not for me.

I loved this. It‘s extremely readable yet uncannily intellectual. Captures attitudes and styles/trains of thought I‘ve never seen before.

It‘s also somehow emotional…I cared about what was going to happen to the characters. I was totally invested in the story, as I generally appreciate unusual stuff like this, the type of stuff that can easily be off-putting to others.
