The Stepford Wives | Ira Levin
post image

I had only heard of Rosemary‘s Baby by Ira Levin until I stumbled upon the #StepfordSummerParty. Here I am, four years late. Nevertheless, I plan to read the discussion thread after I‘m done reading.
The cover is giving me the creeps. 👁👁

#currentlyreading 👗👜👠👀 #USA

Ruthiella He wrote a ton of books that were adapted to the screen. A very interesting writer. 3y
Ast_Arslan I loved this one 🤩❤ 3y
erzascarletbookgasm Hope you‘ll enjoy! After that, watch the movies (both), they‘re fun! 3y
BiblioLitten @erzascarletbookgasm @Ruthiella @Ast_Arslan I enjoyed this short but loaded read. The trailer of both the movies look very interesting, too! Will watch them next weekend. 😊 3y

Fight Club | Chuck Palahniuk
post image

#90sSpringFling

Question 7 of 7.

If you participated in #StepfordSummerParty and or #HellOween  buddy reads did you have a favorite book? How did Fight Club compare to the other two books? How did you feel about Palahniuk‘s writing compared to the others? Do you see any similarities between the three books? Would you consider Fight Club horror???

Megabooks I didn‘t do either of those buddy reads, but I have read The Stepford Wives. I think Fight Club is more suspense than horror, but I did find FC scarier! 6y
BookwormAHN I missed The Stepford Wives, but I really loved The Elementals. I liked the way Palahniuk writes but I didn't think that Fight Club was horror. I think it was more psychological suspense. 6y
BarbaraBB I agree, FC is much more psychological than horror. I didn‘t do either of the other buddy reads but I will be joining from now on ♥️ 6y
See All 20 Comments
Librarybelle I‘ve participated in all 3! Stepford Wives was the spookiest for me, I think. The Elementals I didn‘t really enjoy and thought a little campy, though I know I was in the minority on that. Fight Club is more psychological. All three have been fun to read, and I‘m excited to see what the next read will be! 6y
TrishB I loved The Elementals. Didn‘t do Stepford Wives and bailed on Fight Club. 6y
peaKnit I‘ve participated in all three as well. I enjoyed The Stepford Wives the most I think because the 70‘s were such an odd time. I didn‘t think any of them were particularly scary, but all definitely weird 😊 I‘m with @Librarybelle on The Elementals, campy is a good word. 6y
Kalalalatja I read The Elementals and enjoyed it way more than FC! 6y
thereadingowlvina I didn't join The Stepford Wives, loved The Elementals and bailed on Fight Club. I didn't like the writing at all 😔 6y
DebinHawaii I joined in all three & Stepford Wives was my favorite. All had dark elements mixed with dark humor. I agree that Fight Club was more psychological suspense than horror. I listened to The Elementals on audio which I think enhanced its campiness & made it fun-scary. Fight Club just grossed me out. So for me, I'd rank them in the order we read them. Thanks for hosting @Cinfhen & @BarbaraBB looking forward to another buddy read. 🤗 6y
CarolynM I wouldn't have read any of them without the buddy reads but I felt that all of them were interesting reads. I think The Stepford Wives was the best of them. It was atmospheric and insightful and I actually cared about the characters. Thanks for the party @Cinfhen and @BarbaraBB 😘😘 6y
GripLitGrl The stepford wives was my fave the book had a more creepy vibe & diffrent ending to the film. So while i saw the movie the book felt diffrent & kept my interest. Elementals would be my second pick. fight club the book was so-so for me really translated better for me as a film. 6y
GripLitGrl I Definitely dont see fight club as horror genre. The other two books fit into the horor genre. 6y
batsy All three are such fascinating books that I probably would have put off for longer if I didn't do the buddy reads, so thank you for that ❤️😁 Stepford and Elementals win out over Fight Club, but I'm glad I read FC; it's definitely a book that disrupts one's perspective! 6y
erzascarletbookgasm I didn‘t do The Elementals (couldn‘t get a copy on time), SW and FC were great reads though I liked SW better. Wouldn‘t have picked up FC if not for the buddy read. Both are thought provoking and have loads of discussion points. FC is definitely not horror. 6y
Cinfhen First to my triple hit players @batsy @GripLitGrl @CarolynM @DebinHawaii @peaknit @Librarybelle Thank you for partying with me through the decades! It‘s been super fun and I‘ve found our discussions really insightful. For me, SW was my fav too. The story just worked on all the levels and it‘s withstood the test of time. I too thought Elementals was more of a spoof and campy is the perfect word. It was more atmospheric than scary. Hated FC 6y
Cinfhen @Megabooks @BookwormAHN @BarbaraBB @TrishB @Kalalalatja @thereadingowlvina See above comments and THANKS for sharing your LOVE of reading with me!!! These buddy reads are only successful because of your participation!! So fun to share music, fashion and books with you all!!! Hope you‘ll be back for #BelowZer00s in Jan 2020😜 6y
JaclynW @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB I missed the Stepford Wives buddy read 🙁 but I've done the last 2 reads. I liked both The Elementals and Fight Club. I agree with others about Fight Club being more psychological and Elementals more horror (campy, yes). I think Stepford Wives would be more MY kind of book than the other two so I've got to read it someday. I have it, just need to carve out the time. I've read 2 other books from that author and LOVED them both!! 6y
JaclynW @Cinfhen Count me in for #BelowZer00s ! 6y
BarbaraBB @JaclynW Yay! You can still nominate a book from the 00s - see @Cinfhen ‘s page! 6y
JaclynW @BarbaraBB Great! Thanks! I will start thinking. 6y

Question 4: This is for those who participated in #StepfordSummerParty 💕 Did you prefer one book more than the other? Do you consider Stepford Wives horror after reading this novel? #Helloween #80sParty

Cinfhen I personally enjoyed Stepford Wives more. I thought the story was creepy without any over the top antics. All subtleties were left to your own imagination. It was also the implied messages that I found more menacing and thought provoking. I would call both these novels #HorrorLite 6y
Librarybelle I agree with you, @Cinfhen . I much preferred Stepford Wives over The Elementals. I like the name #HorrorLite ...both had potential elements (no pun intended), so I can see where there is a spook factor in both, but I was by far more creeped out by Stepford Wives. 6y
Cinfhen I also felt Ira Levin wrote a better story @Librarybelle 6y
See All 20 Comments
AmyG Oh, I love Ira Levin, so I have to go with Stepford Wives. I love books where odd or supernatural things happen to every day people. For me it‘s about whether the story is believable or not. Stepford was more believable to me. 6y
Cinfhen I‘m tempted to read @AmyG 6y
AmyG READ IT. And see the movie. 💕 6y
batsy For me, both were really good and unexpected reads 👍🏽 Levin was less campy than I expected, and McDowell was more so. I thought The Stepford Wives was chilling in real world terms but The Elementals was imaginative and creepy. Horror as a genre operates in the realm of fantasy, as well, and in that vein The Elementals intrigued me :) 6y
TrishB @batsy agreed 👍🏻there is a very grey area of horror/fantasy! 6y
Bookzombie I really enjoyed them both equally for different reasons. I think Stepford Wives falls into the horror genre quite easily. As @batsy said it‘s very chilling in real world terms. The Elementals is probably what most people think when they think horror, but the horror genre is quite broad in my opinion. 🙂 6y
DebinHawaii Stepford Wives is a sentimental favorite due to my love for Levin, plus I think it was a subtler but more chilling creepy rather than the gothic camp of The Elementals & thus more scary. I did enjoy them both though and like that in both, much was left to the imagination. And I would like to see The Elementals as a movie too--I think it has some great possibilities in the right hands. (And yes, @Cinfhen read & watch Rosemary's Baby!) 😉😱 6y
Cinfhen Will definitely be adding Rosemary‘s Baby to my infinite TBR @DebinHawaii @AmyG and Happy Birthday 🎊🎂🎁🎈 @AmyG 6y
bookandbedandtea I liked both books and would consider both to be #HorrorLite They both creeped me out in different ways. Stepford Wives was a little scarier to me because the evil was human. And so personal! I would still like a book from Walter's perspective because I just can't understand his actions. 6y
peaKnit I think I liked Stepford better because it seemed, while bizarre, more plausible. I found the southern language a little...patronizing? Overdone? I‘m not sure I could read “gone” for “going” one more time. I love a southern accent on audio but reading it in print is tedious for me for some reason. 6y
Bklover I think Stepford Wives was creepier. Plus I kept having trouble believing that a 13 girl would voluntarily go into a house that her dad was afraid of. Between that and the weird occasional nudity I just kept getting pulled out of the story too often. 6y
Reviewsbylola I actually liked Elementals better. The characters were more fleshed out for me and I was really drawn to them. 6y
Pamwurtzler I think Stepford was overall a better creepy read. I liked the family in The Elementals better than the people in Stepford though. 6y
CarolynM Stepford Wives had a lot more substance and better writing. It left me much more unsettled than this one without any explicit violence at all. I'll still be thinking about Stepford long after I've forgotten Beldame. 6y
Mdargusch I would definitely consider Stepford Wives as a type of horror book. I definitely loved the better developed characters in the Elementals like @Reviewsbylola 6y
GripLitGrl Horror lite sums them both up perfectly! The stepford wifes was more unsettling horror leaving you to imagine how scary it escalated to. The Elemental was more the horror I am used to in reading the build up was a bit slow but the ending was the build up the length was perfect 100 more pages I would've grew bored 6y

#ReadingResolutions #JuneWrapUp 📚

June was a busy month for me & less audio books while working made for a lower number of books read/finished, but I read some really good ones. I limited myself to 4 favorites below-but there were several more I could add to that list. Several books started & not finished & I remain behind on reviews-both here & Goodreads.😬
Loved the #stepfordsummerparty buddy read with @Cinfhen & a great group of Littens.☀️💛

Look what showed up today, only a week late for @Cinfhen 's #stepfordsummerparty ☹️ I'm glad I downloaded the e-book as media mail & Hawaii just don't mix very well. I ordered it on June 1st from Book Depository & the order processed & shipped on the 4th, so almost 4 weeks to travel. Oh well, was only $5, it will be nice for my shelves & I can read the Chuck Palahniuk intro as the e-book is Peter Straub. #lookingonthebrightside

CarolynM Worth the $5 for the bookmark! 6y

Pickpick

It‘s #Recommendsday! If you enjoy a creepy, provocative, suspenseful social commentary, particularly dealing with society‘s treatment of women, read this. The author doesn‘t spell everything out, and leaves things open to interpretation, which encourages deeper thought. All in all a good story, I‘m glad I read it. Thanks @Cinfhen ! Now to watch the films. 📽🎞

Since #StepfordSummerParty was a total blast I‘m throwing another party and you‘re ALL INVITED 🎈🎈🎈#HELLoWeen October 25 - 28, 2018❣️I‘m asking you to suggest some classic 80s horror reads ( preferably under 350 pages) and we can chose our next group read👻🤡☠️ If you thought the 70s were fun, welcome to the 80s 🤸‍♂️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♂️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♂️🤸‍♀️

Cinfhen I‘m thinking you might be interested @Lizpixie 6y

Cathythoughts I‘m in 👍🏻❤️ 6y
BookwormAHN I'm in 🖤 6y
MrsV Can I join? 6y
Cinfhen Yay!!! Our first suggestion @BookwormAHN 💕and glad to have some new party guests @MrsV and my old time friend @Cathythoughts 6y
mabell I'm a total weenie, so I may have to just spectate this one! (While peeking through my fingers) 😳 6y
CoffeeAndABook Count me in!!! I‘m such a scaredy-cat, I‘m not sure I can contribute book suggestions but I promise I‘ll read along with you guys by my side 😬😬😬 👻👻👻 And the 80s!!! I was there full on!! While the 70s were childishly cute for me, the 80s were in my bones, as painful as it gets music-, fashion- & especially hair-wise!!! This is going to be so much fun 🎀 6y
Cinfhen Hahahahaha, me too @mabell so I‘m hoping we can agree on something scary BUT not blood curling! I think @erzascarletbookgasm book choice is meant to be horror-lite😗so that might be a good option for us weenies 😜 6y
erzascarletbookgasm @mabell @CoffeeAndABook @Cinfhen I‘m a scaredy-cat too, that‘s why I suggested a ‘mild‘ one! 😄 Depending on the choice of book, I may have to sit this out till the next party. 6y
Cathythoughts Is Frankenstein long ? Would that be an option. ? Maybe @TrishB a short book ? ( novella) by SK ?? 6y
Lizpixie I got you @Cinfhen 6y
Cinfhen I knew I could count on my #greeneyedpixie @Lizpixie 💚 6y
batsy @mabell Me too! I'm hoping whatever we read is not too gory 😆 6y
batsy Love the idea of a good haunted house horror so I'm suggesting this one published in 1988 :) 6y
batsy Also tagging @Reggie and @rohit-sawant because I think #HELLoWEEN screams their name 😁 6y
Reggie @TrishB did they make good horror back then that was anything less than 500 pgs.? Lol I wanted to suggest Stinger by Robert McCammon but it sits at 542 pgs. I‘m totally up for this though, @batsy. 6y
Librarybelle @erzascarletbookgasm @mabell @CoffeeAndABook @Cinfhen @batsy Consider me a squeamish one as well! I stay away from a lot of horror, so depending upon the book choice, I may have to bow out of this one. 👻 Sorry - can‘t offer any suggestions - I‘m a tad more in tune with gothic horror (Poe)! 6y
thereadingowlvina Oh count me in please! 😁 6y
Pamwurtzler Count me in!! 6y
SledgeReader I‘m with the squeamish team. But don‘t let me hold the group back! 👻 6y
Velvetsun Ooh I want to be included. 6y
Reviewsbylola Fun!! I don‘t have any suggestions so I‘m excited to see what gets chosen! 6y
Mdargusch I have to join in for the 80‘s theme but I‘m not a big horror fan. This will be a fun way to get into a new genre 6y
Bookzombie Count me in! I will have to look for some suggestions. 👻🎃💀 6y
GripLitGrl 🙌🙌count me in such fun! The only one I can think of that's not too long 6y
RealLifeReading I don‘t read much horror but I do make an exception for Halloween 🎃 6y
RealLifeReading I just found this Japanese horror novel - written in the 80s but only translated into English in 2017. Nothing scares me more than Japanese horror! 6y
RealLifeReading Night Things sounds good @batsy 6y
batsy @RealLifeReading I have that on my TBR and didn't realise it was written in the 80s! Nice. True, I expect Japanese horror to be terrifying (which is why I've been putting it off 😅) 6y
peaKnit I was looking around and remember Different Seasons by Stephen King, my own 80‘s obsession😂 it has four novellas, 3 whichbecame movies, we all know Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, then Apt Pupil was also a movie. Leaving Breathing Method, but it‘s only 60+ pages, maybe The Body (Stand by Me) and Breathing Method? I loved that whole book, wore the pages out in 7th grade! That said, Night Things also sounds interesting. Excited! (edited) 6y
Cinfhen Thanks for the suggestions @RealLifeReading @peaknit @GripLitGrl @batsy I‘ll compile a list and then put it to vote! So glad you‘re all back in @Mdargusch @Reviewsbylola @Pamwurtzler @Librarybelle @SledgeReader @Bookzombie It looks like most of us prefer horror-lite 😜 6y
Reviewsbylola I actually prefer as gory as possible but I see that I‘m in the minority. 🤣🤣 6y
bookandbedandtea I'm team squeamish but when you guys finalize your choice I'll see if I think I can handle it. 👾 6y
DebinHawaii Late to the party as usual. I saw this last night but sleep beckoned harder. 😉I'm in, but struggling with a book recommendation that's under 350 pages & from the 80s, readily available now, that isn't a total gore-fest. There's this one which is first in a series and I haven't read although it gets good reviews on Amazon. And it put I Wear My Sunglasses at Night in my head. 😎👂🏻🐛 Oh-it was first published in 1989 too so right on the cusp. (edited) 6y
TrishB @Reggie I haven‘t found any yet! 6y
TrishB I‘m not squeamish !! Will give most things a go! 6y
Cinfhen Love you @DebinHawaii and love that song by Corey Hart but I don‘t think I can handle a vampire book 🤪 6y
mabell I agree with @Librarybelle - gothic horror may be more my speed! I'm looking forward to seeing what is chosen and whether I think I can handle it 😬 I can't wait for the 80s posts! 😎 6y
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen It's OK. I love you too. 😍😆That's all I got at the moment that hasn't been mentioned. 80s horror was a lot about the page count. I'll try to look for something else later if I get a minute. 6y
DebinHawaii I probably lean to #TeamGore with @Reviewsbylola and @TrishB 😱😆 6y
TrishB Not read that one! Looks good 👍🏻 6y
DebinHawaii Works for me! 👍 6y
LeahBergen Count me in! 6y
LeahBergen The Elementals sounds great (I may have read it back in the day 🤔). I love a good haunted house story. 👻 6y
Bookzombie I second @RealLifeReading on Graveyard Apartment! Also, Night Things @batsy posted. 6y
Bookzombie I lean toward #teamgore. 😁 6y
Cinfhen Woohoo 🎉🙌🏻💜 @LeahBergen NOW the party‘s getting started !!!!!! 6y
Cinfhen I‘m gonna whittle down the list a bit and put it up for vote tomorrow @Bookzombie 👻 6y
GripLitGrl Nice suggestions so far looking forward to seeing what we end up with👻🎑🙌 6y
Bookzombie @Cinfhen That‘s great! Thank you for putting this together again! 6y
BluestockingDuchess This will be fun! 6y
peaKnit #nerdalert I just entered this buddy read into my calendar! 6y
Bklover Oh this sounds like fun! I missed the discussion but read all about it (I‘m vacationing with my oldest daughter). This next one should be great! Can‘t wait! 6y
bookandbedandtea @Cinfhen @DebinHawaii @TrishB @Reggie @Reviewsbylola @mabell I went to look up The Elementals and I accidentally one-clicked it! 😯 So if that's the one that gets picked I'll try to participate despite being #TeamSqueamish ! 6y
TrishB @bookandbedandtea accidentally one-clicked - love it 💕😁 6y
Cinfhen Oh Man @bookandbedandtea I‘ve done that before🤪it‘s gonna get my vote so 🤞🏼🤞🏼that the others vote for it too!!! I bet if you contact Amazon, they will credit you. 6y
vivastory I'm definitely down for a horror read! I see The Elementals has gotten a lot of mentions. That's been on my TBR for awhile now! 6y
Reggie I kinda wanna 3rd @RealLifeReading. When I looked up best 80‘s horror fiction that book was in the top ten. 6y
ElishaLovesBooks Oh boy! I‘m the biggest scaredy-cat. I once started reading a Dean Koontz while I was babysitting in the 90‘s and have been traumatized ever since! 😱😳 I may be open to it if it‘s not too scary! #imabigbaby 6y
bookandbedandtea @TrishB @Cinfhen I was on a business call and didn't realize it at first, then was pretty annoyed at myself! But I decided to keep it. Maybe, if it's the one, reading it with a group will make it easier. 6y
bookandbedandtea @ElishaLovesBooks Same! I read something when I was a teen (blocked the name due to trauma I guess! Or maybe because it was so long ago! 🤔) then couldn't sleep for days. #scaredycatsunite 6y
asiriusreader Awesome, I‘m in!! 6y
ValerieAndBooks Maybe something by V.C. Andrews? I remember her being popular during the 1980s! 6y
