Ruthiella Ugh. Alec is such a manipulative creep. I know this book is old, but that sh** still happens. I think that‘s why this one is really going to get under my skin. I‘m taking it personally. 1y
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella seriously though! 1y

TheBookHippie @Ruthiella Ughhhhhhhhhh. It happens ALLLL THE TIME. The strawberry is supposed to be symbolism for her not quite a woman allure to men to want to take if I remember right. 😵‍💫🤦🏻‍♀️ is 🤬🤮 @BarkingMadRead 1y
BarkingMadRead @TheBookHippie that makes sense 1y
Bookwormjillk Don‘t eat the fruit Tess!! This all went way over my head in high school! 1y
currentlyreadinginCO This all went over my head in hs, too! @Bookwormjillk but life has absolutely taught me to watch out for this dude since then! I am somewhat surprised that a male author in 1891 wrote a creepy guy this blatantly. 1y
Clare-Dragonfly WHAT. A. CREEP! And it‘s so sad that Tess can‘t articulate why he creeped her out. And the handwriting in “Mrs. D‘Urberville”s letter is masculine… what do you want to bet the old lady has no idea Tess even exists? 1y
Deblovestoread Agree that Mother is likely being kept in the dark about what her son is doing. 1y
Bklover Not sure what I was expecting but so far it‘s surprising me - what a nasty creep! I know it‘s a dark book, but wow! It also makes me wonder how Tess came from that family. 1y
Cuilin It‘s all so much darker than I remember. 1y
dabbe @TheBookHippie That could also be the reason she's the only one with the dancing girls who has a RED ribbon in her hair. #watchouttess 1y
dabbe @Bookwormjillk I saw the movie years ago, and I remember this scene with Natassja Kinski. It was sizzling in all the cringing ways, though NK was absolutely gorgeous. 1y
dabbe @Deblovestoread Hopefully she's not locked up in the attic like in JANE EYRE. 😃 1y
TheBookHippie @dabbe Oy to the Vey.... #probably 1y
julieclair @Cuilin I find that many books are much darker as an adult, vs. when I read them as a child or high school or even college. Is it the wisdom of years, or the loss of innocence, or both? 🤔 1y
julieclair @dabbe Oh great, now I‘ll never look at red ribbons the same way again! 😂😂 1y
dabbe @julieclair Sorry about that! 🤣🤩🤗 1y
dabbe @TheBookHippie Now THAT should be a new word. How would one spell it? Just like you did, I think. #oytothevey 🤩🤣🤗 1y
TheBookHippie @dabbe My family wants me to patent it 🤣👀🤷🏻‍♀️😂 apparently I say it often… (edited) 1y
dabbe @TheBookHippie 🤩🤣🤩 1y
Cuilin @julieclair I think it‘s because I went to Catholic school and if anything “spicy”went over our heads they were not going to point it out. 🙄 1y
julieclair @Cuilin 👍😂😆 1y
rubyslippersreads @Clare-Dragonfly @Deblovestoread @dabbe I hope Alec‘s mother isn‘t locked up in the house like Norman Bates‘s mother. 😂 1y
